We find ourselves out in the desert late in the evening. The sun is setting to the west. Hues of red and orange envelop the violet sky.
{So, what do you think?}
{About what, Alvaro?}
{Well, you decided to meet the food transport out here in the desert. What's your plan?}
{It's very simple. We'll just take a detour around the area and right before dawn deliver the food to the back of the mission.}
{That does sound simple. But it's unfortunate we had to wait until the cover of darkness.}
{Well, it's not just that. There will be no moon out tonight.}
{How do you know this? Is this magic?}
{No, just a gut feeling. Haha}
A small wagon pulled by small donkey rides in our direction. Before we can make a move, a team of soldiers led by Lt. Lavina appears just beyond the horizon.
{Someone must have leaked the information of our meeting place to the soldiers, Huehue.}
{What now, Alvaro?}
{I don't know.}
{Oh, so no last-minute plans?}
{I would say to leave the wagon but I don't think that would be good for the orphans.}
{All right. Then this is what I'm going to do.}
Huehue runs toward the soldiers instead of the wagon. She leaps into the air as she approaches Lt. Lavina. She swiftly kicks the side of the horse,
causing it to fall onto the ground, ejecting Lavina in the process.
{Don't worry…}
Just as I was about to protest, Huehue leaps into the air again, catching Lavina just before she hits the ground.
{You can thank me later.}
Huehue runs into the wild desert flat land with the soldiers in pursuit.
{Watch this, Alvaro.}
She runs west toward the setting sun. She continues this for several minutes after the sun has set. In a blink of an eye, Huehue is on the wagon with the old farmer and dusty donkey. I experience motion sickness from normal physical activity, but this is different. I thought I could manage the dizziness before.
{You can…teleport?}
{I can open a portal with the power of my mirror, the one you have in your possession. How else do you think I can travel to Mictlan? There are no doorways on this plane to use other than what is available through the mirror. Tezcatlipoca could open bigger portals though.}
I hear her wheezing.
{Are you all right.}
HUEHUE
{Yes. It takes a lot of my energy to do it, so I'll have to try to ride the wagon back to the pueblo, but only for a bit. We'll get the food there. And the soldiers? Well, they'll be riding deep into the darkness before they realize I'm gone.}
{Be safe.}
{Don't worry. Once I can, I'll carry the wagon, donkey, and old farmer with me.}
{Dios mio.}
{Haha. I'm so good.}
