Chapter 6 - Kuntilanak

Day by day, I often see mom who sometimes looks scared and doesn't dare to go to the kitchen or to the bathroom alone at night. If she is still able to control her fear, mother dares to go alone but when she feels bad, mother will ask me to accompany her to the kitchen or the toilet.

At that time I also felt the same way, a feeling of fear because it seemed like someone was watching me when I was playing in the living room, but I didn't see anyone there.

That day dad was off, we spent time joking and telling stories before going to bed. At exactly 21.30 we all heard the sound of a dog howling which was so long, we all fell silent and stopped joking.

I immediately hugged my mother for fear of hearing the sound of a dog howling like a wolf, Mother and father exchanged glances, we were all silent observing the sound.

The longer the sound of the dog's howling sounded right behind our back door, at that moment I heard my mother's heartbeat getting louder, I also hugged my mother even tighter. The atmosphere that night was really scary.

My father looked at me wistfully, he knew that my mother and I were getting scared. "You guys wait here okay, don't get out of bed. I'll check it out" dad said.

Mom nodded, even though she was really worried about dad. I'm afraid it's a stray dog that will attack her husband when he opens the door, but on the other hand, my mother believes that father can handle it.

Dad got out of bed and checked out, the sound of the dog's howling stopped immediately when dad opened the back door.

We were silent with tense feelings, while listening to what dad was doing out there. But we didn't hear anything, until some time later dad came back in and he took ablution first before entering the room.

"It's safe, we better go to bed now" said dad breaking our tension.

"What happened? What was that sound just now?" asked the mother wanted to know.

"I will tell you, but not now. Let's just rest, I promise I will tell you tomorrow" dad replied. Mom nodded, then we decided to go to sleep soon.

The next morning, mother prepared a cup of coffee and some food for breakfast. After that she sat in front of her husband to collect his promise last night.

Dad was enjoying breakfast, then he glanced at mom who was looking at him with a hopeful smile. "Why are you looking at me like that?" asked dad confused.

"I was waiting for you to tell me what you saw last night"

"Come on, let's not talk about it anymore. You'll just get scared later."

"But you promised me to tell you"

Father was silent for a moment, mother is a curious person but also has a high curiosity. "Okay" dad answered with a deep breath.

"Last night I saw a strange creature behind this house"

"Strange creature? What kind of creature do you mean?" Mother furrowed her brows. Actually, mother already suspected that the sound of howling last night was not the sound of an ordinary dog, mother also knew that father also had an open inner eye. Mother is very curious what kind of strange creature father saw behind the rented house last night.

"Actually, when I came out of the room and wanted to open the back door, I also heard a woman's voice laughing. When I opened the door, the woman immediately flew and entered the bamboo trees," explained the father.

"Kuntilanak you mean?" mother was shocked.

"From the white dress she was wearing it looks like, yes. That woman is a kuntilanak. But not only that, after the kuntilanak disappeared I saw a pair of dogs too"

"Dog? It's probably the pet of the residents in this village!"

"Is that so? But I don't think there is anyone around here who keeps a dog that big. The dog's body is many times bigger than the size of a normal dog. One is black and the other is white and the height is almost the same as my shoulders"

Mother paused and stared at father intently. "That's true... Where in this village is there a dog that big..." mum mumbled. "Husband, let's just look for another rental house, I'm also not comfortable here. Almost every night I hear snoring from which it's not clear where it's coming from," continued the mother, who often experiences strange occurrences when father is not around.

Mama was sure that the snoring was not coming from the neighbours, because out of the 4 rented houses there were only 2 families occupied and we happened to occupy the rented house right in the middle between the two empty houses, while our neighbor was at the west end of the door.

"We can move, because I've already paid the rent for this house for one year and the money is non-refundable"

"Then, how?" mom is a bit disappointed.

"We're moving out of this house, but you have to be patient until the lease expires. How about that?"

Mother was silent, she thought and considered. But what dad said is true, they have to spend the rental period first before moving.

For a while maybe we have to survive, I also just started school, if mom asks to move maybe the distance between my house and school will be even further. In the end, Mama tried to give up and stay in the rental house.

I will explain about kuntilanak, this ghost named kuntilanak is the ghost of a woman who has long hair, wears a white dress, has a pale face with black eye bags.

The kuntilanak's stomach always looks distended because, usually, the kuntilanak is the ghost of a pregnant woman. She is very sinister and has a high-pitched, shrill laugh.

This kuntilanak ghost also has a very distant nature and likes to disturb, said some people who understand, anyone who meets a kuntilanak directly and hears her laughter, that person can become possessed.
