Chapter 57 - A Life of Choices, and Death

"You're already dead," I said, not paying attention to her as drones suddenly swarmed her from all angles and bound her in cords. I considered what to do with Naru as she screamed and hit the floor, but the sounds seemed to have drawn some attention.

The girls upstairs seemed shocked by the noise, but I explained over the intercom in my office that it was just another person applying for a position in our family. They seemed shocked, but all went back to their work like they had heard nothing.

"Let me go! This isn't fair! I wasn't ready!" Naru complained, and I sighed. The girl was cute, but I had no interest in children nor in collecting brides.

"Let's get something straight if you plan on working for me. One, I don't need to prove anything to anyone. Two, I'm not looking for a bride, and three, you do as I say when I say it." I said, turning my back on her and starting to walk away.

"Ugh...fine..." Naru muttered from the ground, and I nodded in agreement as my drones released her.

"Good, now get up and come with me, and we will discuss your position more," I said over my shoulder as I walked towards my office, and she scrambled up to follow me.

"So, who do you want me to kill? Or do you want me to threaten someone? I am pretty good at that!" Naru said as she caught up to walk beside me.

"No, for now, you will be working with the other women in the office," I said, and Naru made a whiny noise.

"Paperwork? I am not good at that stuff! That is what Isola does! I am the violent one!" She complained, but I shook my head.

"As far as I can tell, you are reckless and are more than likely to get yourself killed. I have already read the two reports that list you as a prime suspect in two murder cases. Assassins don't become suspects, nor do they walk around announcing who they work for or what they are doing. You have already broken all the essential rules for the survival of someone in your profession, so for now, you will be in the office until I can train you properly," I said as we passed Miles's office, where he was diligently working, and then stopped in front of my office. "Do you understand?" I asked. "You are more of a liability coming to work for me than a help, and I can't send you on jobs, or you will just end up drawing more heat in my direction."

"Fine, I understand," Naru said with a groan as I opened the door, but Fawna was standing there with a smile.

"Naru?! You are coming to work with us?!" Fawna asked excitedly, and Naru stood frozen for a second before bursting forward to hug Fawna.

"I was wondering what happened to you!" Naru said excitedly as I watched with a questioning look. Fawna broke from the hug and then looked up at me.

"Naru was one of our informants, but she always lied to me. At first, I didn't like her, but after time she started to grow on me, even though I knew that she was feeding me false information," Fawna explained, and I nodded as Naru looked around the room at the computers, then back at me.

"What are all the bright boxes?" Naru asked me, but Fawna grabbed her hand.

"I will show you how they work, and then you can practice over at Caleb's desk, right?" She asked, looking up at me, and I nodded. I had just been about to ask her that exact thing.

"Thank you, Fawna. I am going back to work on my project in the warehouse," I said and then turned to Kilna. "Once the boys are done with work for the day, I want you to see if you can teach Naru how to use drones. Having more pilots will be crucial for our success in the future," I explained, and Kilna nodded.

"Sure, but how are things going in the back?" She asked with her headset still on and clearly still controlling the drones.

"Lost the first one, but identified the problem, now just trying to figure out some solutions," I said, and then sent her a picture of the handwritten r that I had found in the metal. "Do you know what this is?"

Kilna paused but then shook her head, wiping her hand to push the image out of her view. "No clue. Never seen something like this. Hey, I think that there are some city guards closing in on the boy's location. They are coming from two districts and heading in their direction," She said, and I pulled up her view, switching to one of her stationary drones and taking control to get a better look.

There were five coming from the north, and the same amount from the east, converging on the boy's and silver knights' location. Someone must have tipped them off, but having them disrupt a job was not going to fly. Quickly looking over the number of houses visited and the number of jobs done today made it clear that people were scared to even get our help. The last thing we needed was for guards to show up to question them after we left and probably harass them, which was bad for business.

"Keep them working. I will deal with the guards," I said as I turned to leave.

"Are you going to kill them? I know a lot of them are bad, but some of them are just doing their jobs," Kyla said, speaking up, and I turned back to her.

"I don't kill because I enjoy it. I do it because my lifestyle requires it. I care very little for the ones that act innocent while watching the crime take place. The guards will have to make some choices, and living or dying will be one of them; I can assure you that," I said coldly, leaving out the part about me having to keep all of them safe as well. "Any more questions?"
