Chapter 27 - Isn't It Fun Learning Magic?

Alzoria Marketplace…

Chrysos browsed the shelves and saw many types of spells. There were long ranged spells, short ranged, shield spells, and many more.

They were displayed in such a nice way that even Chrysos silently praised it.

The shelves make use of magic to produce light illusions, somewhat like a hologram producing the image of a scroll and the effects of the spell in a cleanly looped, three dimensional video.

They even have minor effects for extra realism.

The wind spell scrolls have wind magic circuits that blow out a weak breeze so it looks like the hologram was actually producing real wind. The lightning ones are also genius. When you touch the suspended lightning video, the lightning touches your finger to make it appear like actual lightning.

Chrysos widened his eyes for a moment to show his surprise before he nodded in approval. "It seems that these magic casters take their job very seriously."

He then began to imagine a magic caster making these holograms only for their boss to show dissatisfaction upon seeing their work, and then immediately telling them to add more realism.

Chrysos laughed at the thought as he picked a fire spell. He would no longer use incendiary potions if he had this spell. And honestly, he should've gotten this a long time ago.

But it slipped his mind so many times that he almost forgot.

Chrysos took the scroll with a cool fire hologram showing a trail of fire that looked like it came from a flamethrower. As Chrysos watched the hologram, he saw that it could shrink and enlarge its attacking area.

The scroll is called Burneix Fire Trail, made and sold by the mage Werian Burneix.

It's a rare tier spell and it costs 15 gold coins. Pretty expensive for someone with Chrysos' income by relying on the adventurer's guild alone.

Even if a normal adventurer took on the quests that Chrysos would normally do, they wouldn't be able to achieve the same effect because they are still limited by their human bodies.

Not only that, they have limited ways to earn money. Chrysos could sell ingredients, sell potions and earn a lot from them. Normal adventurers aren't as rich as him to buy potions or better equipment.

Chrysos has an Alizuite sword and a set of Taronite armor. Of course he's better off dealing with intermediate quests than the normal adventurers are. Even with the combined strength of three boars and the humanoid body of a Crimson Elephant, he still couldn't earn enough money if it weren't for his smoothie business.

One has to take note that Chrysos has the body of a Crimson Elephant and the strength of three boars. Not the strength of an elephant and three boars. The elephant is the range of the potential strength he could gain, and the boars are the amount of strength he could currently exert.

Moving on to magic and a little bit of Divinious knowledge…

In this world, awakened ones cannot cast a spell by imagining a spell in their mind and it suddenly creates a magic circle for them to use.

No, that's not how it works.

Awakened ones have to spend time and draw a magic circle with all the necessary components mainly being symbols and markings. Currently, there are 3,848,092 usable symbols and 1,901,291 markings as of today's date.

The worst part is that, even if you know the right symbols and markings, without drawing the magic circle in the right sequence, it wouldn't work properly or just do nothing. And in rarer cases, they can explode.

Magic circles are drawn using Divinious and combined with the complicated symbols and markings, awakened ones must absorb the magic circle in order to use it in the middle of a fight.

Someone from earth can call this magic programming.

The absorbed magic circle gets stored in what people called the "Divinious Heart." And once a magic circle is absorbed, the people who absorbed it will remember the magic circle and distinguish it very accurately even if the Divinious Heart has over a million magic circles stored inside.

Going back to Chrysos..

Chrysos saw a small sign saying, "Please put the correct amount of coins in the teleportation magic circle next to the shelf. If not given the right amount, you wouldn't be able to get your spell." As he continued reading, he saw another message in red.

"Do not touch the money and the scroll as it materializes. It can cut your finger and even damage the scroll."

He looked to the left of the shelf and saw a small, circular dormant teleportation array the size of a medium plate.

Chrysos put 15 gold coins on the magic circle and the money began being surrounded by strange blue and white light before it turned transparent until it fully disappeared. After that, the same blue and white light began materializing a scroll at the spot where the coins used to be.

Looking at this excellent use of magical technology, he was truly amazed and thought, "Very convenient for a shop." Chrysos then took the scroll and put it in his backpack.

He looked around more and saw a rare tier spell called Windslash Aricos. He bought that as well, paying only 11 gold coins.

Of course, he wouldn't just buy two spells.

He also bought a rare tier spell called Ellron's Freezing Arrow, and a rare tier spell that was just called Farsight. It was a very bland name. The creator of the spell is named Anknoris Frallius.

In the Divine Lands, it roughly translates to Unknown Failure, but it could also be a name. An example of that being Arman Anknoris or Arman Frallius.

It mostly depends on the context, so if it's a surname, it wouldn't be made fun of since it doesn't really sound like it. Only if it was put together will it become sort of a joke.

And since he finally got all that he needed, he didn't see a reason to stay anymore.

Chrysos left Alzoria Academy shortly after.

He went to a training hall named Frinton's Training Hall to rent a room and learn the spells he just bought.

As he entered the large stone gate of the training hall, he was welcomed to a spacious area with yellow soil and a large number of rooms surrounding the area. He also saw many trainees swinging their wooden swords at straw dummies.

"Just by sensing their Divinious, I can tell they're all around the Pragius rank…" Chrysos mused to himself as he watched the youthful energy burst out from the trainees as they poured it into their training.

He was about to explore the area until a man wearing an instructor's uniform approached him. The man had scars all over his face and arms. He has orange hair and a small ponytai, his eye color is black, he has a large frame and he has dark skin after training under the sun for prolonged periods of time.

"Hey there, you must be looking for a training room, aye?" The man looked at Chrysos up and down as he showed a casual smile as he licked the upper left area of his teeth.

He wasn't trying to look menacing or arrogant, he just got a thin strip of pork chop stuck on his teeth.

Nodding his head, Chrysos replied, "Yes, I'm actually looking for an area where I can train for hours. It must be secluded, and it must be strong enough to endure magic spells."

"Ah, I understand that. Follow me, I have what you're looking for." The man turned to his side as he gestured for Chrysos to follow him.

Chrysos did as the man told, and while they walked, Chrysos saw a bunch of ranged awakened ones. They all steadied their bows or their crossbows and aimed for the targets.

The Spearhurlers tossed their javelins at straw dummies. Most of them hit the body, while only two missed. One of them hit the head though.

The Aerialist Archers flew up in the air and tested their mobility and how they steadied their feet while they're in the air. As they shot their arrows at the targets, most of them missed and only five of them hit the target. Chrysos watched their training closely and saw the strangely made magic circles and the air fluctuating under their feet, similar to the haze one can see above fire.

Noticing Chrysos watching the trainees, the man bringing him to his training room chuckled softly and said, "Not bad for Pragius ranked trainees, ain't they?"

"Not bad, not bad.. Personally, I have no say in this because I'm not an expert when it comes to this stuff." Chrysos told the man.

The man nodded. "I see, so is this room good enough for ya?" He banged his fist on a stone door numbered, "29" and opened it.

It was a large empty stone room with one wooden dummy inside. It was nothing too impressive, just like what Chrysos asked for.

"I'll take it." Chrysos turned to the man. "How much for this one?"

"Ehm.. Fifteen silver for two hours and thirty minutes sounds good?" The man spread his arms as he looked at Chrysos.

Bling!

Chrysos flipped a gold coin using his thumb towards the man. "Just give me the change later."

Catching the gold coin and examining it close to his eye, the man clenched his fist holding the gold coin and chuckled heartily. "That's great, if you have any problems with my training hall, just tell me or the staff and we'll try to get it fixed for you."

Chrysos furrowed his eyebrows. "You're Frinton?"

Frinton laughed. "No no no, that's my old man's surname. And of course, mine. The name's Solorg Frinton, at your service." Solorg waved his hand as he left.

"Nice guy.." Chrysos thought to himself as he watched his figure leave.

Chrysos went inside the training room made for testing or learning spells. He slowly studied the spells that the students of Alzoria Academy made with their creativity and knowledge.

Picking up a brown paper scroll with a fiery red design, Chrysos exhaled slowly and stretched out his arm. He slowly opened his palm and began practicing.

"Alright, according to the scroll, simulate the Divinious like this, manipulate their structure like... this? And once you do this... it should work now." Chrysos used his Divinious to draw on the air.

Chrysos worked on Burneix Fire Trail and he followed the scroll's instructions. It seems that this Burneix guy is very adept in fire related spells.

Using red colored Divinious, he slowly drew the magic circle. But as he continued drawing, the magic circle collapsed and disappeared.

Sighing after this failure, he sat down and began to draw it on a more stable surface. That stable surface being the floor.

It took a few tries but he managed to draw it in the end.

He reached out his hand and absorbed the magic circle. He felt it phase through him and enter his Divinious Heart.

Now knowing that he has the spell done, he reached out his hand, materializing the magic circle that he activated with his Divinious. Because of the Divinious flowing from his Divinious Heart that went through the magic circle, a strong trail of fire shot out from his palm. It looked like a trail of dragon breath.

"Awesome!" Chrysos was exhilarated. "Now I don't need incendiary potions anymore!" Chrysos laughed with a delighted look on his face as the orange glow of the fire landed on his face.

He controlled the trail of fire and found out that it was a simple spell that he could control easily. He manipulated the magic circle and some of its markings and symbols changed. After that, the spell weakened.

Chrysos nodded in approval. "Mhmm. I have to applaud this Burneix guy." The spell was easy to learn and you can even control its strength. Chrysos really liked how it was done. The scroll had step by step instructions which made the learning easier.

Next, Chrysos moved on to Windslash Aricos. This spell was a little complicated that's why it was priced a bit lower because of it. Chrysos followed the instructions as usual and took his time to master it.

"So the air Divinious is converted by the wind symbol, circulates by an A-type symbol to an E-type symbol, this causes the wind to..."

The A type symbol looks like the outline of the moon, and the E symbol resembled a sharp triangle with many horizontal lines inside it.

Chrysos drew many types of symbols that looked like a swirling curve, or a very exaggerated "S" symbol.

Chrysos was reading the entire thing when he saw something from the scroll that made him knit his eyebrows together.

"... This air cannot be used for breathing even if the breeze was weak." Chrysos found this detail strange. But he continued practicing regardless.

Half an hour later, he managed to finally use the spell.

He stood up from the ground, and summoned the magic circle from his Divinious Heart. This magic circle is a dynamic type magic circle.

Dynamic means that it can be summoned from a specific point, that being Chrysos' hand in this case. And can be locked, and unlocked. Once a magic circle is locked to a physical object, it cannot be removed unless unlocked. Only dynamic magic circles can be locked and unlocked.

Static magic circles meanwhile, cannot and are forever locked to where they were summoned. The Fire Trail spell is a static magic circle and will always appear on the user's palm.

Chrysos looked at the light green magic circle on his palm, so he unsheathed his Alizuite sword and locked the magic circle on its blade before he slashed the air.

Swoooosh!

A silvery blade of wind cut through the thick wooden log in his training room.

Chrysos opened his eyes wide at his performance. The Windslash was working just as well as he thought. "Amazing... I love how it works this way.. And not only that, if you weaken the spell's output, it kind of works like an electric fan." Chrysos blasted air to his face using his palm.

He didn't have his mask on to feel the wind, and surprisingly, he could breathe in it even though the scroll said he couldn't.

"Wait what? Didn't it say that I can't breathe in this stuff?" Chrysos reread the entire scroll once more.

Thirty minutes later...

Chrysos found out why he could breathe in the air coming from his hand. Apparently, it is required for the spell to work if you visualize air clearly.

The people from the Divine Lands didn't know that oxygen, nitrogen and other gaseous elements exist. So of course, Chrysos could breathe in the air because he knew something that they didn't.

With his knowledge, he could visualize it clearly and he could use it better than them.

"So that's why it works..." Chrysos brought his fist down to his palm in realization. "Wait, what if I visualize other types of gas?" After getting this thought, Chrysos closed his eyes and visualized another type of gas. He tried helium.

It failed, Chrysos slapped himself for being too optimistic.

Chrysos quickly moved on and decided to test something.

It was something he discovered in the Divine Lands.

Pyraline and Depyrium

Alchemists wouldn't think too much if their potions burn or if anything else happens. They merely think of it as a normal occurrence.

Chrysos, meanwhile, discovered multiple gasses that shouldn't even exist because of the studies done back on earth.

Normally, the protons, electrons and neutrons count in an element. However, some things in the Divine Lands do not work the same as it does on earth.

Pryaline, named by Chrysos, is a special gaseous element not being noteworthy anywhere else, but it has something that normal elements do not have. And that is the Divinious charge.

But when it comes to the rules of the Divine Lands, isn't visualization supposed to be useless when casting spells? To affect a spell, the magic circle's symbols and markings must be changed too, right?

Not exactly.

If a specific function or property isn't specified in a magic circle, some things can be changed.

The magic circle of the Windslash Aricos doesn't specify what type of wind is being used. It just uses the symbols and markings to say that it is using wind. And with that, Chrysos has the ability to use his Divinious Heart to affect the contents of the air to a small degree.

You can't use a weak magic circle and create a nuke just because you believed hard enough. You also can't use a basic earth spell and create steel with it just because you visualized the earthen spell was made of steel.

To achieve that effect, the necessary symbols and markings need to be used, or else the changes made by the Divinious Heart through the user's visualization will be limited.

Divinious charge is the type of magical element it has. For example, fire obviously has the fire attribute, so it has the fire Divinious charge.

With the same rules, Pyraline has metallic Divinious charge and fire Divinious charge.

It's supposed to be a normal type of gas, but because of the Divinious charges in the mix, it becomes a dense gas coated in metallic Divinious. Burning this gas is a slow process, because the flame has to fully burn a molecule in order to move on another.

Depyrium is the same case as Pyraline, except that it both has fire and lava Divinious charges. Chrysos managed to discover it after brewing fire related potions.

So, by combining them using alchemy, he created Depyrium Tripyralide.

It is created through a ratio of one Depyrium and three Pyraline atoms. And instead of calling it in its scientific formula being DpPy3, Chrysos called it Inferno Mist since there are other ingredients mixed to create it.

Inferno Mist is an orange gas that burns violently when exposed to fire. Huge amounts of Inferno Mist can lead to explosions and overall devastation according to Chrysos' theories.

...

Taking a bottle from his waist filled with orange liquid, he opened it which caused it to turn gaseous the moment it touched the air.

Chrysos used wind slash at the mist and it resulted in a thin, orange wind blade being shot out. It carried all the orange mist with it and the moment the wind blade hit the wall, it spread out into a large area filled with the Inferno Mist.

The reason it did this was because of the spell's mechanic in order to produce a thin but sharp arc of wind. When activated, the spell gathers the air around it and compresses it into an arc as it gets shot through the magic circle.

Seeing this, Chrysos was surprised. "Oh wow, it actually works?" He closed the bottle immediately because he didn't want to destroy the stone training room. Even though it was built to withstand powerful spells, he wouldn't be able to survive the explosion if he was ever dumb enough to fill the room with this stuff.

He stood far away from the small orange fog and casted fire trail on it.

Fwoosh!

Fire came out of Chrysos' hand.

The moment the flames touched the Inferno Mist, it immediately combusted into flames.

Boom!

The small explosion left a huge black spot in the corner of the room. And that was just a handful of Inferno Mist. If it were a bit more of these things, the explosion would be enough to incinerate him whole!

"Okay, now that's something I'd like to see..." Chrysos was genuinely surprised at the Inferno Mist's effects.

He didn't have a way to get a steady supply of these stuff since they usually burn during potion brewing, so this was a potential weapon with slow production speed.

After unlocking the ability to commit arson, Chrysos moved on to the Freezing Arrow. When he opened the scroll, he couldn't help but admire its creation.

The arrow is quick, gets shot immediately after being cast, and it deals freezing damage. Now that was something that Chrysos liked.

The piercing ability is also amazing, so this could be handy during different situations.

He spent a lot of time on it. Drawing magic circles is very difficult. Even for him.

Chrysos learned the spell in two hours. The spell was very time consuming to learn, but it would be easier if the projectile's formation was an ice stalactite.

But no, the mage named Ellron who made this spell had to make the ice projectile look like a fine, beautiful and intricate ice arrow. He sacrificed style for learning simplicity.

Chrysos didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

"I mean, the arrow looks cool and it is a strong spell, so I can't really complain." Chrysos shrugged. He shot out the arrow from the magic circle on his palm and saw nothing wrong with the effects.

And finally, the "Farsight" spell.

"Alright Unknown Failure, let's see if your spell works just like how I expect it to." Chrysos opened the scroll and began reading.

Honestly, he enjoyed reading and testing out the spells. It felt quite fulfilling for him everytime he got to learn a spell.

Chrysos' eyes went through the entire scroll and after finishing it, he sat blankly.

"That's it?" Chrysos double checked the scroll again.

It wasn't complicated, it was just...

Too simple to understand.

Whoever this unknown failure was, he was the opposite of failure minus the unknown.
