CHAPTER 3
NEW YORK
LOOKING BACK, the boy saw the men running who tried to catch up with him. Her feet ached from the uneven pavement. He no longer screamed for help, because people imagined he was the danger, since he was being chased by armed police who did not shoot at him because of the people passing by on the street. Freddy saved his breath, because he knew he was running for his life, he couldn't count on anyone's help.
Everyone is dead...
Gregory Evans didn't know how long it had been since he'd run like that, he was getting old but he was still in excellent physical condition.
If I don't die after today, I'll live forever...
The people he bumped into looked at him in astonishment and he prayed that his thoughts would reach Nicole, his granddaughter.
This is a nightmare... — he said to himself. But the hot tears that flowed contrasting with the cold wind that assaulted her face.
The policemen were getting closer, they were getting closer and closer, and he realized that he couldn't keep running away, he felt weak because of the captivity from which he had escaped. He was scared as he had taken the lives of those rich kids and would undoubtedly be doomed.
Then, in a desperate attitude, he crossed the street abruptly, not paying attention to the chaos that ensued in an instant: cars suddenly braked, stopping millimeters in front of him. The horns and curses he heard competed with each other in an attempt to overlap each other.
The memories then came to mind, his face contracted in despair, a cursed black van and a boy pushed him inside, covering his breathing with a damp cloth. Everything then went out, and when he woke up, he found himself carried by two boys inside what appeared to be an abandoned house. He then pretended to be unconscious and, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the existence of dozens of torches that illuminated the place, in a dark way. A gigantic statue of an angel with a broken sword and a huge dragon with its teeth stuck in its throat caught his attention.
It disturbed him, and with a shudder, his captors realized he'd woken up. The raptors' eyes seemed cold and devoid of compassion, they were pure evil and mockery. Still drowsy, he looked away from them, staring at the ceiling, where a geometric representation in red caught his attention. He had seen that somewhere before.
Then he remembered a book that one of his classmates had shown him. The book was about a small orphan boy who, trained in a witch school in England, becomes a powerful wizard. The story sold millions of copies worldwide, making the author a billionaire.
When he saw a uniformed man less than a hundred meters away, hope returned to him.
It could only be a policeman, he thought.
Although his uniform was different from those worn by the guards... it was then that he used the only moment of weakness in which the boys were about to sacrifice him and managed to kill them.
A GREAT AVENUE, now, separated him from what would be his salvation, the light was closed. He looked back once more, there was no more time; then, seized with sudden courage, he ran zigzag through the sea of automobiles flying in all directions. His pursuers stopped when they reached the edge of the avenue.
Just a little more... — thought Freddy.
Then, suddenly, he raised his eyes, contemplating the colossus in front of him.
No! — The voice came out to him loud and vibrant in his thoughts — The coliseum? — suddenly, the image of the great Roman coliseum transformed — Madison Square Garden? Brought me to New York?
— We're here to help you — shouted Greg.
The boy came to himself and realized that the coliseum was just the result of the drugs that had been applied to him.
This perplexity made his attention dissipate, which was enough for, in seconds, a BMW 320i at high speed, to take his feet off the ground. The world then spun in Freddy's head, and the Coliseum in his mind was taking shape from the stone jungle that was New York, so close, it seemed to make a complete turn in the air.
GREGORY EVANS, THE NYPD's most famous detective, who had watched that boy desperately try to cross the avenue, God only knows why, putting the lives of everyone around him in danger, ran toward him to find out what really happened. was happening.
With arms raised, immediately stopping traffic. Then, noticing him with fractured legs, but still alive, he took him in his arms.
Freddy Martinez couldn't feel his legs and everything was still spinning around him. In a flash, he saw that he was about to slip into unconsciousness. Then, in frank desperation, he tried to warn his savior:
— I didn't mean to kill them...
The words came out faint and barely audible, then everything went black.
Greg had no idea what was going on, but he would soon know that those deaths would be the beginning of a great trail of blood.
