Catfish Broodstock are mature male and female catfish of over one and half years old, selected for the purpose of breeding.
Catfish male broodstock should have ripe sperm sacs or milkish Milt or liquid.
Before commencing hatchery operations, the males and the females are selected and kept in solutary confinement for a day or two to enable them to brood properly.
Brooding helps them to condition themselves to the future task of reproduction, expected of them.
The female eggs are examined before selection, by pressing the under belly to extract some eggs.
The color and stongnest of the eggs are used as parameters to ascertain its quality.
Dark brown colors, gold colors are preferable to green colors.
When you have good quality broodstock and functional hatchery, it's time to start the "breeding" proper.
