Synopsis

Chapter 1 - Prologue

My name is Effy and I was born out of an artificial womb in the year 2089.

My first memories were of dark blue walls, endless corridors, and thousands of snake-like corrugated tubes streaming down from an incredibly high ceiling.

I remember faces peering down at me, observing me. They all looked the same and wore the same pale blue matching shirt and pants. Everything was blue, except for the blood.

I remember the hanging chambers, full of violet blood of those not yet born and I liked to watch the closest ones squirm and move around almost doing somersaults.

If I had no memory of my previous life, perhaps I could not make so much sense of what I was seeing at such a young age, merely an infant, but I remember what it was like to be human. It's nothing like what I feel now.

In my last life as Harley Swans. I was part of a large anti-Synth group and my life goal was to destroy them. It must be some sort of poetic justice from the Creator that I am now reincarnated into the thing I hated and feared the most.

Humans used to believe, including myself that Synths could not feel, but the truth is that heading toward the year 2110, we feel too much. We just can't express it. Each synthetic human born has already built-in memories and the complicated neural networks of not just one human being, but millions combined.

The early years of synthetic humans could be described as pure horror as the sentient synthetic being could not handle so much internal sensation, feelings, and knowledge all at once. Many died or asked to be terminated.

Humanity's response to synthetic humans was split down the middle with the upper class embracing them and the low to middle class despising them mainly for their abilities and their favoritism.

For this reason as well as their incredible physical strength, all Synths legally have to declare who they are at their place of work, when they enter stores and when they use public transport.

Not declaring your Synth status will get you arrested by the Global Synthetics Board. A controlling government body over all AI and synthetic humans.

I have managed to hide my status since I was around 13 years when I left the human family that I was paired with for raising, because of extreme jealousy from their human children. I did everything myself from that point on, moved in with another Synth in hiding and so far we have avoided suspicion.

There are several things that will give me away so I avoid them at all costs:

1. Not getting cut in front of anyone so know one sees the tell-tale violet colour of my blood.

2. Not crying in front of anyone, as Synths cannot cry tears. We feel it none the less but there are no tears.

3. Not rescuing people that involve lifting off of cars, stopping trains or anything that shows my strength with more than 2 people present because of the high probability I will be reported.

As I get closer to my 21st birthday it's getting harder to hide who I am and I am starting to feel I might need to move away.

I work for a large Accountancy firm in Admin so I am facing people all the time. It's funny because they talk to me all day long not knowing that I am the source of most of their discriminations and biases.

That's how well we are designed, we can pass as human, even surpass humans for believability.

I think I am happy, if happy means I have a stable income, friends I hang around with and a career, but there is always a dull sense of foreboding that encapsulates me.

I cannot fully relax.

I don't think I ever will.
