'You have to let me go.'
She couldn't remember her first words. They had been stolen from her somewhere far away. She could only see a blur that resembled a boy sitting on a couch facing her. His eyes were a bright blue. His nose was crooked at the end. He looked sad, but she knew it wasn't because of her.
Her mother told her the story when they went grocery shopping after her first day of school. Her father didn't come home for lunch again until three days later.
She didn't care if it was true or not. In her heart, there was this niggling sensation that her first words were taken, like a piece missing from her life that would never be found again. Maybe that wasn't a reason to get upset, but then, what was? The boy across from her was just a boy. A boy who had lost his parents. A boy who had no one else. A boy who needed help.
He was looking at her with those big blue eyes. 'Please,' he said. 'Let me go.'
She shook her head. 'No.
