Chapter 31 - Traps

"We just need to place traps all around certain areas near the shelter." A burly man said while taking a small sophisticated bite from a brownish potato-looking thing.

"Near the shelter? I have not seen any creature near the shelter since the 2nd day. How about the grazing area?" Another man said, on a second note, he was not really a man but a growing kid that was a year younger than reaching his 20s.

"But you never know when something wanders its way here. We have already seen a huge variety of things... it will be wise if we don't just depend on these defenses."

"Huh... that's a good point, Uncle John. But do you know any traps?"

"Haha... I wouldn't have brought it up if I didn't know... Let's start in a while."

While both Lucas and John were talking, others couldn't help but listen without interrupting. Or on a second note, they didn't have anything to say as there was no entry in the conversation.

Setting up traps was something even Ella was in the dark that John knew how to do.

It was given that John and Lucas were the ones doing all the bidding around and no one had any objection because both of them were making the shelter progress a lot. Ella was a little sad that both her sons were not doing anything but complaint all this time.

'What would have happened if we hadn't reached here? What if there was no smoke? What if we were the ones that got in a fight with that big plant?' All these questions filled her mind and didn't seem to get out soon.

She knew survival would have been tough if they were the only ones. No matter how productive and informative John was, if there was no one like Lucas around, they wouldn't have been sitting this peacefully without a speck of food shortage.

"Lucas, Dad, thank you for the food, I will go now..." Barney said and left without a word.

Lucas looked at his back leaving and felt that something good was going to happen soon. To be honest, he was very excited for Barney to progress in his skill. The thought of him moving around small sharpened sticks or daggers made him have chills about how good their support would become.

"Don't you think it's a little weird that there is no danger these past few days?" Sarah butted in, she had to speak in between so that she could also feel like she was helping.

"If there are no dangers, then it's only good, Sarah. Don't worry..." Ella patted her head in affection with motherly eyes that Sarah didn't refute, from the look on her face, Lucas felt like she was enjoying it.

"You may be right about this Sarah, the floating texts said that we are a beacon of danger and that many will attack us. These days have been too peaceful." John said while his hands on his eyes brows, he was thinking very hard or was just tired from the night shifts that Lucas and he were doing.

They were the only ones that were helping, John didn't want Ella to not have a good night's sleep even when she was persistent about taking her own shift. Sarah on the other hand had already failed her first night shift, the meaning of the night shift was to stay alert all the time and wake everyone up if one hear something outside.

But Sarah slept with Lucas on the first day which he could not ever forget as her face was sitting on his shoulder.

And about Barney and Sean, they were just too untrustworthy to be given this much responsibility. While Barney looked to be mature, only John and Ella knew how irresponsible and lazy he was.

Lucas had a gist of all this too but was reluctant to say anything about it. He couldn't handle someone making a scene and break the harmony in the group.

"We can only do our best to make traps like Uncle John said, there is nothing better we can do right now."

Everyone nodded in response while Sean was just sitting half asleep on the log near the camp.

"And Uncle John, have you decided about the free points?" Lucas said and changed the topic.

John looked to be in some thought when finally, a smile formed on his face. He said, "I have decided to not use them."

Lucas didn't say anything but stared at him with a confused face as if telling him to continue.

"After learning about them from you and the texts, these points are only given at the time of the level-up. So using them this quickly is unnecessary. I will collect and use them at the time of need."

"... Alright, it's your wish at the end." Lucas didn't show much but he thought that Uncle John's idea was good. Even he had not used his points of this level-up ad just decided to store them secretly.

-

After 15 minutes,

Everyone left to learn and make the traps. According to John, he knew two basic ones that he was going to teach everyone.

First was the deep hole that everyone once in their life had seen in any type of entertainment they consumed. It was just as stated, a hole was to be dug that was deep enough to keep the creature inside.

Lucas gave the idea of putting a stick with a sharp point at the bottom of the deep hole but John told him that it was unnecessary.

They made a hole near the south of the shelter, John then placed some weak but long twigs that were all around the ground over the hole and finally, a bunch of leaves and grass were kept over it.

Even Lucas knew how to make this trap but he didn't want to interrupt thinking that he didn't know the process completely.

Just like that, they all made about six traps, one in each direction of the shelter and two at the passage toward the grazing area. There was a chance that the Kobolds would come.

The traps were inefficient for the Kobolds but some altercations were made like they placed a sharp spear at the deep ground of the hole and some small pointy sticks on the walls pointing upwards with poison-laced on the tip.
