Chapter 62 - Danger to the mother and child

[Clayton POV]

The fear washing over me, both my wife and child's lives are probably in danger, I remember the article of the number of death during childbirth.

I can't lose her, not like this, not when we just gotten happier, "hang in there okay," I tell her.

We arrive at the hospital in the nick of time, Dr Martin has already has nurses ready to take my wife.

"We will take it from here," he says, wheeling her into the emergency room.

They take an hour and a half, I cannot stop ping, the uncertainty of my wife's life makes me really anxious and somewhat angry.

'Can't we have a happy life," I cursed my luck, it seems each time we are happy a misfortune is thrown our way.

"Mr. Beckett," Dr Martin says coming out of the room.

'How are they?"

"I am afraid I have some bad news; we are going to have to remove the baby through C-section," he says.

"What?" I shout, "it is not her due date yet."

"Yes, it seems both the mother and child we are going to need to take the baby out, it will be a premature birth," he explained.

"Are there risks?"

"Yes, but there will be more risks if we do not remove the baby," Dr Martin explained calmly, he listed all the risks associated with each choice.

"If you remove the baby, will it survive?" I say softly, "please."

Dr Martin smiled before reassuring me, "your wife and child will survive this, I promise you sir."

I wanted to be in the operating room, but Dr Martin advised me against it, since he believed I was too frustrated to let the nurses and doctors work in peace, but who can blame me, who can be calm know they might lose their wife and daughter?

I called home to explain what was happening, grandmother was not happy about it, since for all the check-ups they never detected that it could be premature labor. All examinations always came clear and indicated the baby was okay.

I waited for 15 hours while they operated on my wife, each hour passed with a heart in my hand, I trusted Dr Martin to bring them out alive, but I felt fate hated my guts and I might not get what I wanted.

Dr Martin came out of the room looking defeated, I feared for the worst, maybe I had lost everything.

"Congratulations you are a father to a baby boy," he says, "both your wife and the baby are well, though he born with a low heart rate."

"Can I see them?"

He shakes his head, "we still need to get the baby to his cubicle and your wife is just getting out of the ER, it will only take a few minutes, a nurse will come and tell you when they are ready."

There are many thoughts running through my head, but most importantly I am happy they are both okay.

But I feel the hate that I had gotten over the months return, what if he is like his father, will his image make me hate him more?

My phone rings as I fight my demons, "Joshua?"

'Hey, I heard Leah went to labor, is everything okay?"

"Yeah…. We have um…... we have a son," I say sadly, I cannot stop the tears, I don't want to hate this child, I want to love him, but I am a human with humanly desires.

"Oh… congratulations," he says, "Clay…. Just meet him with an open mind, forget about what the Mule guy did, just meet this baby as a new father okay."

His being able to detect where my mind I am in this situation goes to show how great of a friend he is, because I sure needed that.

We talk for a bit before a nurse comes to call me, "I got to go, it seems I need to meet my son, update Conan on what is going on." I tell Joshua before hanging up.

I follow a nurse to the pediatric center, where she directs me to a small cubicle holding my son. He looks beautiful, so beautiful, a little warrior.

He opens his small eyes, I feel emotional, all that small hate that was creeping disappears when I look my eyes to those beautiful green eyes, as big as his mother's.

"You can also see your wife," the nurse says, I don't want to leave him here, it is probably alone, there might be other kids here, but he probably needs his parents with him.

"It is okay sir, we will take care of him at the best of our abilities," the nurse reassured me, I nodded before walking to Kaleah's room.

She still a bit drowsy from the operations, I know she is one hell of a woman to carry and give birth our beautiful son.

"Hey…" she says still tired.

"Hey mommy of two," I say.

"How is he?" she asked half scared half hopeful, maybe she is also anxious about him being finally here.

"He is beautiful, you did a good job," I say, I see tears fall down her eyes.

"Will we be good parents? Will we love him as Zoey?" she asked as she burst out crying.

I hug her gently as making sure I do not open her operation wounds, "we will, I already do, he is so perfect, wait till you meet him."

She hugs me as she continues to cry, letting all the emotions out, I know she will be alright, I know she will love him, because I already love him too.

They roll his cubicle to her rom son they can meet later that day, "Oh… he is so beautiful," she mutters happily.

"Do you have a name?" the nurse asks, I think I already have a name, but I want Kaleah to give her name first.

"Well, I don't know…... we never really planned on a name," she says, I feel like I am being put on the spot, given I already have a name.

"Well, I have a name in mind," I say sheepishly.

"Oh… then what is his name?" Kaleah asked, I take a deep breath, I have never named a child, this is my first name.

"Well, given he is such a warrior, I think Kaiden would be a good name," Kaleah smiles at me, "I like it, Kaiden Beckett," she mutters happily.

The family took turns coming to see Kaleah and Kaiden, and after Kaleah recovers, we had decided to prepare Kaiden's room for the remaining two months he will be in the hospital.

Painting Kaiden's room with the sweet help from Zoey who kept knocking down buckets of paint, we were able to finish everything ourselves in a few weeks.

We took turns visiting him in the hospital, he was growing well, and he could make a few sounds. But tonight, was a different night, Kaleah and I were going out tonight, no kids no family.

"It seems he will be home soon," grandmother says happily, "two grandkids, I have two grandkids, they are so cute."

"Yes, Dr Martin says he will be home sooner due to his great progress," I say happily. I think I am in love with him already, he is such a perfect child.

Kaleah walks down the stairs wearing a red blue dress similar to the one she wore on our wedding day, since it was our anniversary and we were going out.

"You look beautiful" I praised; she smiles shyly. I had hoped to have Kaiden home during our anniversary, but it seems he will be home a bit late.

"You should thank me for thinking ahead, if I didn't trick you; you would have been single and miserable," grandmother teased.

"Yeah, we get it," I say before taking my wife out on our date.

We spent the night in each other's arms, reminiscing of the good and bad times we had had in this yearlong marriage. I hope to have more years together.

After the night we return home, and for some reason everyone is still up, "they are here," Cyan chimes.

"Mama, dada" Zoey says running to us, she takes both our hands before taking us upstairs.

"Where is she taking us?"

"It is a surprise," grandmother says happily. She directs us to Kaiden's empty nursery, but only it is not empty.

"Kaiden?" Kaleah and I say happily.

"Yes, Dr Martin called this morning telling us Kaiden is ready to go home, and we decided to bring him home as a surprise." Cyan says.

Kaleah moves closer to his bed before lifting him to her arms, it is only recently that we were allowed to hold him, "he is so tiny" she says crying her eyes out.

"Congratulations," grandmother says, complete, I do hope to have more kids with Leah, but right now we are complete.

I wish to give both my kids the love and support they will need growing up, and that is a promise. Even if it kills me Kaiden and Zoey will have all they need.
