Chapter 20 - Trial of the Gauntlet Part-1

Once again, Freya stood at the front of the grand assembly hall, her regal gaze sweeping over the gathered students. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation, a potent mix of excitement and trepidation.

"Today," Freya's voice rang out, commanding the attention of all present, "you shall undertake the Third trial, known as the Trial of the Gauntlet!"

The students' hearts swelled with a newfound sense of wonder. The mention of the Trial of the Gauntlet sparked their imaginations.

"Just like all the other trials, the Trial of the Gauntlet consists of four distinct parts," Freya continued, her voice filled with authority and a hint of mystery.

Freya's eyes met the inquisitive gazes of the students, and a mischievous smile played at her lips. "As I said before, each part serves a unique purpose, testing different aspects of your abilities and preparing you for the arduous path of becoming a knight."

She proceeded to list the names of the different parts, ensuring that the gravity of the challenge settled among the students.

"The Entrance, Physical Obstacle Course, The Challenge of Endurance, and The Elemental Gauntlet."

As Freya paused, her eyes scanned the room, seeking any further inquiries.

Silence reigned for a moment before Freya's voice broke through the stillness. "Once again, are there any questions?"

"When will we get a break from the trials?" a student asked, their voice trembling with fear and excitement.

"Well, after this trial, you shall be granted a respite, a whole week to rest and explore the city and do whatever you want," Freya said softly.

"Yay!"

"Finally, rest we can do something in the city!" the students exclaimed, their voices brimming with anticipation.

"But remember, this does not mean you can slack off from your training," Freya added, reminding them of their duty to become formidable knights.

"Any more questions?"

The resounding chorus of "No!" affirmed the students' readiness. Their hearts danced with excitement and happiness, eager to embark on the Trial of the Gauntlet.

"Now, my dear students, this trial will give test your physical prowess within you, needed to become full-fledged knights. I wish you nothing but good luck and hope that you emerge from this trial stronger than ever," Freya said, her voice carrying a sense of encouragement and support.

"Thank you, Miss Freya!" All the students shouted in unison, their voices filled with gratitude and determination.

"Very well, let us begin," Freya announced, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

Turning her attention to Master Lane, who stood by her side, she addressed him respectfully, "Master Lane, we are ready."

In response to Freya's command, Master Lane tapped his staff on the ground. The air around them shimmered and spun, expanding to reveal a portal leading to another realm, infused with fantastical energy.

Chase and Ava stepped into the portal and emerged in a vast chamber, its walls adorned with ancient symbols of strength and endurance. The air crackled with magic, and the presence of a figure dressed in black-clad armor holding a long, shimmering sword commanded their attention.

"Welcome, brave warriors, to the Trial of the Gauntlet," the figure, spoke with a resonance that sent shivers down their spines.

Chase couldn't help but ask, "Who are you? You seem familiar, like a guide we encountered in the Trial of Shadows."

"I am Malcolinus, the first Dragonslayer, a once-powerful knight from millions of years ago. Now, I serve as the overseer of this realm," Malcolinus said with a prideful look on his face. "Surely you have heard tales of my legendary exploits."

Ava spoke plainly, her expression unyielding. "Overseer, we must admit we haven't heard of you before."

Malcolinus's face fell with disappointment, but he quickly recovered. "Well, it doesn't matter. I'm sure you'll come across tales of my valor at some point," he said, a big smile gracing his face.

"Overseer, what were you doing millions of years ago?" Chase asked, his shock evident as he believed the overseer.

"I am the knight who slayed the very first dragon," Malcolinus said, his eyes shining with pride.

"Okay, what else?" Ava said, not fully convinced.

"Um, I fought in numerous wars, singlehandedly defeating armies of over a million men," Malcolinus boasted.

Ava looked at Malcolinus, with disappointed glances, but when she looked at Chase he had an expression of shock, It was clear that Malcolinus enjoyed embellishing his exploits and Chase loved it.

"Alright, Overseer, we appreciate your history, but we are here to face the challenges that lie ahead," Ava said, taking a step forward, for Chase to stop believing the overseer.

"We seek to prove ourselves worthy, to test our mettle and emerge victorious," Ava added, nodding her head.

Malcolinus's eyes assessed their determination and resolve. The air in the chamber grew thick with anticipation as he transformed into a spectral form, embodying the essence of a seasoned warrior.

"The Trial of the Gauntlet is not for the faint of heart. It will test your physical prowess, mental fortitude, and unyielding determination," Malcolinus spoke with authority, his voice resonating with the power of ancient legends.

"We understand the gravity of this trial, Overseer. We are prepared to give it our all," Chase said, looking at Ava and then back to Malcolinus, his resolve unshakable.

"We have trained rigorously and honed our skills. We are ready to face any challenge that awaits," Ava said, gripping her axes tightly, her gaze unwavering.

The overseer's expression softened slightly, a mix of pride and caution reflecting in his eyes.

"Very well. Remember, the Gauntlet is a path of perseverance and resilience. It will push you to your limits, both physically and mentally," Malcolinus nodded.

He raised his hand, and the chamber trembled as a set of massive doors creaked open, revealing a dark, winding path that seemed to pulse with mysterious energies.

"Beyond these doors lie the challenges that will test your mettle. Steel your resolve, embrace the hardships, and stay true to your purpose," Malcolinus pointed toward the path, his voice echoing through the chamber.

"We shall face them head-on, Overseer. We shall prove ourselves worthy," Chase said with a smile, mentally preparing himself for what lay ahead.

"We will not back down. We will conquer the Gauntlet," Ava declared, determination etched on her face.

With a nod from Malcolinus, Chase, and Ava stepped forward, entering the dark path that led to the trials of the Gauntlet. Determination radiated from their every step as they mentally braced themselves for the demanding tests that awaited them.
