"Good job, Joshi." The director is staring right into my eyes as he says that. "You comprehended and tricked a high level operative in the Spaglia Familia. You will be rewarded but I'm sure you're aware of the consequenses of your actions?" I nod sharply. Everyone knows that if you mess with the mafia, they'll mess with you.
"I'll take the necessary procautions." I answer but in my head Alessios words play on repeat.
I'll find you wherever you're hiding.
Watchhing him being put into handcuffs and into the SUV had altered something in my brain. Erased the last part of me that for some reason had hoped that Alessio was anything but a criminal. The way his entire body had closed of and his face had gone cold showed me exactly who he is.
"Good, we'll keep you updated on the case and SSA Ross will inform you of any upandcoming jobs." I think of the file in my car that still needs to be delivered to Ross. He's standing outside the Directors office. Waiting for me. He's still pissed that I did this.
"Thank you sir and please keep me updated." The Director smiles and nods in a way that's such a clear dissmissal that I turn immediatly and walk out. The door closes behind me and I meet the scolding gaze of Ross. He never tells you if he's actually mad, he just looks at you like you've really dissapointed him.
"What'd he say?" Ross asks in his heavy New York accent. I just wave with my hand.
"Nothing I didn't know already." Ross nods and we start walking side by side.
"Where's the file?" Ross holds up a door and I step through.
"Still in my car with Sai, she'll eat anyone who gets to close." That's the actual reason I brought her with me. Kate, the woman I played, was 27, a stripper and had a beloved dog. It took me four months to get close enough to Santiago to get invited to a private party and download the information I needed. Santiago was one of the younger sons in the mexican mafia, one of the ones working abroad.
"Good. I'll pick it up. There's a safe house for you already put up. All the necessary things for you there." It's so like Ross to always be prepared. If I actually believed that he wasn't born a 40 year old I would have sworn that he was a boy scout as a kid.
"Perfect but I actually have to get some things from the car, besides I want to say goodbye to Sai." Sai's actually Ross's dog although he trained her to listen to me aswell. Ross nods and we're silent for the rest of the walk to his office. My go bag is still there on his couch, untouched. When I became Kate I'd left everything except my gun and car behind. I'd only changed the plates.
I sink down on the couch with a sigh and Ross looks at me sharply.
"You alright kid?" I just nod, to tired to try to explain that I feel empty and worst of all; scared.
"So where's the safe house?" I change the subject and we both know it. He sits down on his desk and he looks worried in a way I haven't seen in three years.
"Alaska. It's rigged with enough guns for a small money and enough cash for a few years." My eyebrows rise up.
"You're really worrried huh?" Ross just looks at me.
"We'll get some information out of him but he'll be out in no time. The mafia has connections everywhere." I freeze, I know the track record but I was hoping for atleast a year. So he can cool off and find someone else to go after.
"I was hoping for atleast a year." I smile a little but Ross still looks worried.
"You'll be lucky, you're now a target for both the mexicans and italians. Any more information about the Spaglia is doing here?" I twist my hands.
"Yeah he talked about a business deal with someone, the info from Santiago said the same thing actually. So that could be a good lead." Ross nods thoughtfully.
"That is a good lead, I'll look into it but you need to leave as soon as you can. We have no idea how many of the Spaglia that are here in New York right now." I lick my lips, thinking about protesting but I let it go. When Ross has decided something there's no changing his mind.
"Fine, let's go get the car and I'll be on the next flight to Alaska." I don't to want to leave the Ford behind but I know Ross will care for it until it's safe for me to be back here. Alessio knows I care for it and it wouldn't be that hard to track me if I had it with me.
Ross nods and I stand up. For some reason it feels like I just signed my life away, but that would be crazy. Right?
