Chapter 4 - Unknown Persona

She looked down to see they traveled basically half of the outskirts already, but he circled back the way around next to the small urban housing the government had recently built where Charlotte was heading home. The man lifted her off his shoulder, and she clutched her head in her hands, trying to shake off the lingering headache.

Charlotte straightened her long skirt down. "Thank you."

"Don't move too much. Calix is still roaming. He could see you and think you're making a threat."

She froze. Standing on the rooftop, she stared off into the distance to check if the other person was continuing to chase after them. After moment in the quietness where she could only hear the erratic pounding of her heart, all was still silent. She turned back to see the man who had his arms crossed and staring at her.

In the dark night that was now brightly lit as they approached closer to the center, she could examine him closely. His lips were settled in an unpleased fashion with his eyes glinting with tiredness and bloodlust. His arms were crossed, leaning back against the brick wall casually.

Charlotte approached him slowly. "Is that person gone?"

The man nodded.

She looked up into the sky that was bleak without the shining stars. "Why did he want to kill me?"

"Us. He likely was patrolling and wanted us out of his area."

"You're not with him?" Charlotte asked.

"I'm not. I am my own."

Charlotte leaned back onto the heels of her feet. This person wasn't with the other hostile people obviously since the others had tried to kill her with a crazed look in their eyes.

There was an essence that was different at the man who stood before her. She knew they weren't humans… instead they were likely modified. A creation like that wasn't out of reach for the scientists of this era.

The stranger was standing there was if he was waiting for her to give him something. Charlotte didn't have anything of interest. She was curious, more so than she needed to be. She was planning to head down to the police station the moment the man lets her off. Charlotte was praying he would considering his shocking actions of saving her.

From everything that she had seen, their extraordinary ability, she didn't want anyone to come after her. The police wouldn't be able to catch the people easily with their superhuman strength. Charlotte wouldn't disclose what she had seen, knowing that her life was on the line if she did.

Charlotte would be careful to not go back to the outskirts. She heard of the outskirts being dangerous teeming of criminals, but what she had saw today was nothing short of fantasy. Her hand returned to her side and realized she lost her purse in the process. Her phone and wallet as well.

The wind howled, making her hair swirl around her face as she anxiously twisted her hands. She was completely defenseless against this person. Her eyes met his to see no lingering gold, and she squinted to make sure.

"What are you looking at?" he asked.

"Your eyes. They were yellow earlier. How was that possible?"

She waited for him to answer, but he remained quiet. He seemed to be contemplating a thought, and he tilted his head. Charlotte had a lot of screaming thoughts herself, and she gave him a hesitant smile.

"I don't understand what you want from me unless you say it," she said, as she leaned on the railing of the rooftop. "I'm not surprised that the government created mutants."

He seemed to be more surprised by her statement. "I'm not a mutant. Is that what you have been wondering? We have been here longer than you would imagine."

Charlotte pursed her lips. "Are you saying that you're immortal?"

"Closer than you would think," he stood up and walked forward to her. "I'll make you a deal… in exchange for question, let me have some of your blood."

Of course he wanted her blood too. She shook her head immediately and backed away from the stranger. His sharp teeth were poking out from his sharp smirk.

"No," she yelled. "Back off!"

They were face to face, and she moved her head to the side to avoid his gaze. Charlotte, without realizing exposed the long column of her neck.

"I helped you earlier. It's your turn to pay me back. I need to get out of here immediately," he pressed.

"No one is stopping you. Just go."

He pressed her up against the railing and lowered her face down to hers. "What do you think I am?"

Charlotte closed her eyes at the warm breath caressing her skin. She needed to escape from the hell that they created her. She couldn't tell if what he was saying was true or if he was playing around with her.

She stared up at him when he suddenly locked into place and saw him start to convulse. His body was shaking up in agony, and Charlotte grabbed him to steady him. The man fell to his knees, and Charlotte worryingly framed his face and saw how his eyes were golden again but dimming in light.

What was wrong with him? She didn't have time to process when he was out like a light. He crashed onto the ground like a puppet. Charlotte brought a hand to her mouth. A budding thought took flight.

He was a vampire.
