Chapter 2 - Chapter 2

My mother eyed me curiously and left the room. I decided to call Cate and hear how she was faring. She was also joining the same university as me and today was the orientation day for first years. She received the call at her end and greeted me. She usually laughed whenever I called and for some reason, I found it somehow irritating. "Hello darling, I hope you are fine. I can't wait to join Oxford University. I hope you feel the same way I do?" "Yeah. Guess who is bringing me to school?" "It'll obviously be your mother." "Wrong. Dad is the one taking me.I was thinking that maybe we should come to pick you up by your place.'' "Well, that's a good idea. I'll prepare myself in a jiffy so that I will not keep you waiting."She hung up and her end went silent. I sighed heavily before taking in a few deep breaths.Wait.Was I nervous? Of course, I was and I had every reason to. Traveling with my dad was not something I was used to and it felt very uncomfortable every time we did travel together. Now I understood the reason I was nervous. "Seems like you are in trouble lady?"Max's voice broke me from my reverie making me startled for a moment. Was I that occupied that I could not notice him approaching?"Tell me who is disturbing you and I'll have his head brought to you by noon."Max was always the fearsome type. He was my bodyguard, obviously assigned by my father. But I never for once hated it. Max had saved me countless times from my father's anger, something I was grateful for."There is no need to have the poor soul's head, Max. In fact, you can never go near him."I winked at him and he seemed to understand."Don't keep the poor soul waiting lest you get me fired," he replied in the same manner. We walked through the hallways till we arrived at the parking lot. A black Mercedes was on the wait. Max opened the door for me in the backseat. I muttered a "thank you" to him and entered. The chauffeur was not in the car but rather my father was on the wheels."Why are you driving, Dad? Did you fire Alex?"I asked him suspiciously yet cautiously."Do you expect me to entrust the life of my daughter to a stranger?"He asked me raising a brow at me over the rear mirror. I looked down embarrassed, not knowing what to say. He chuckled lightly and started the engine and off we went.
