These things were cheap and could block the sunshine in such a place. The climate here was similar to the deserts in the southern part of Xinjiang, intensely hot wherever the sun shone, yet it became much cooler in the shade as long as the air circulated well.
In the countryside of Xinjiang, it was common practice to do this. Those with grape trellises in the courtyard didn't need to bother, but for the ones whose grapevines hadn't grown out yet, sunshades were usually set up.
