Chapter 11 - The Indifferent

"Help!!"

A shrill scream rang out of the outer part of the garage, attracting Ryver's attention, he looked in the direction of the scream and saw a frightening sight that didn't seem much alien to him any longer.

A girl wearing a white T-shirt suddenly came out of the vehicle  she was hiding; in an expensive black car and began fleeing in his direction, probably because she had seen just how strong he was but she was being pursued by eight other female zombies. The eight girls were crazy struggling to bite on the white T-shirt girl's body, dying her white shirt red.

Suddenly, she was tackled to the  ground. The white T-shirt girl was constantly struggling and screaming, but she could not escape from the encirclement of the eight female zombies. She gazed at Ryver with tear-filled eyes, asking him to do something.

Looking at the terrible scene from afar,  Ryver's heart remained calm.  He immediately kicked the three zombies in front of him backwards, using a single slash, he behead them while the axe got stuck within the bones of the third. He stomped at the corpse and yanked his axe out.

The eyes of the eight girls who were feasting on the white T-shirt girl held pure hunger, there was no trace of pity nor remorse.

The horrific scene was enough to make even a grown man nauseous and filled with fear and guilt about not being able to help but it was as though Ryver was watching a scene from a movie. He was only focused on killing the zombies before him. The only one he cared about was his little girl, but he must increase his strength to get to her.

His combat experience was more than enough to deal with normal zombies as long as their numbers are not too much. But they would be sufficient if he met a strong zombie or a different string variant.

Since the ones he had been fighting were only normal infected, those of the first  degree would certainly be on a different level. Therefore he needed to prepare as best as he could for what he would encounter.

The eight girls gnashed and slurped the intestines of the lady in white until there weren't any more organs and bloody flesh to feed them anymore, so the eight zombies joined the rows of zombies looking desperately to feast on Ryver.

Ryver remained unperturbed. Using all of his strength, the axe in his hands turned into phantoms, slashing through skulls after skulls of zombies.

When he saw he wouldn't be able to keep up with the speed at which the living corpse were spawning at, he backed into the garage door and immediately locked it from behind.

His breathing was heavy, drawing in more toxic air,  his muscles spamming and the axe he was holding shook slight. Sweat dripped down his forehead as he rested on the garage door.

The zombies were still clawing the garage door, but the door was made out of pure steel, therefore it didn't budge much to his relief.

He closed his eyes and rested to regain his stamina. From the corner of his eyes, he saw the red light flashing.

"Finally." The Decakill was the main reason he had risked fighting those zombies and everything went as calculated. His Evolution points had finally reached 2 points, but Ryver was quite sceptical about where he would place the points.

"Place 0.57 points to strength and 0.55 points to agility."

His agility stats and strength stats gradually started increasing by 0.1 points per second. In the next four seconds, Ryver immediately felt the sensation.

His arms started to itch and his sore muscles shook repeatedly. His legs weren't left out. He felt his muscles tense and pull up as his stats increased to two points.

Finally, after a while, the sensation ended and Ryver sighed. He could feel the exhaustion in his body fade away like a cloud of smoke.

Ryver clenched his fists tightly, they were bleeding slightly. The vigorous fighting had opened up the injury on his palm. But Ryver didn't mind, he could feel his newfound strength coursing through his veins, his upper body became even more defined and streamlined, his leg muscles also tightened, becoming more lighter.

"Status."

His overall stats had now reached 6 units. While it was nowhere near as  strong, he would be able to deal with any unexpected situation and if things proved difficult in the long run, he would adjust his stats according to his needs.

Ryver headed up the stairs, towards the third level. He wanted to test out his strength with the zombies while searching for the fire escape door. As he walked onto the third floor, he immediately froze as he saw something moving from afar, by instinct,  he knew it wasn't a zombie.

He narrowed his eyes and blinked rapidly twice. The double zoom immediately activated and he saw clearly what it was.

At one corner, at the edge of this particular floor several meters away from Ryver, a handsome man who appeared to be in his early thirties was putting on an improvised gas mask that seem to be made from a plastic water bottle quietly came out from one of the larger offices but then froze as he sighted Ryver.

The big plastic and transparent water bottle had been cut diagonally to fit the face, covering the eyes, nose and mouth tightly while the head of the bottle seem to have been corked by a filtration device. With this, the improvised gas mask could filter the toxic radiation, allowing one to breathe fresh air in. This was even better than the wet cloth Ryver had improvised with.

Jacob blinked his eyes twice, also activating his two-time zoom effect. He then sighed in relief seeing that it was another human.

"J-Jacob, is something wrong?" Someone whispered nervously from behind the door he came out from.

"No, there's nothing wrong. I thought a zombie spotted me, but it's another human." Jacob said quietly, sounding relieved, the one behind the door also breathing  in relief.

"You guys stay here, let me take care of the remaining zombies here then we will head to the next floor." Jacob motioned to them that he would be back, and then he locked the door behind him.

Waving towards Ryver. He pointed at the five zombies on his far left and then pointed at himself. Then he pointed at the three zombies that were quite closer to Ryver then pointed at Ryver.

The meaning couldn't be any more clear. Ryver nodded his head towards the handsome man. Seeing that Ryver understood his words, the man counted raised his finger up and then countdown from three.

Three!

Two!

One!
