Dawn breaks to find the Land Rover speeding towards Lusaka, both men in the cab of the vehicle suffering from a throbbing hangover, not much conversation going on, as the sound of the motor grinds through their heads. Last night’s cold beers had somehow turned into double brandies as the events from the day had slowly sunk in, and relief had taken over. The evening had ended with both men, standing at the water’s edge, howling across at the smallholding, until Adele and Peggy had come outside, and shepherded them to bed.
For the first time in weeks, they all slept without dreaming. The men in brandy induced comas and the women exhausted from that day’s event.
On arrival in Lusaka, the first business of the day is to replace the rifles that the Kafue River claimed as toll the day before, as well as purchase sidearms for everyone in the party.
