CHAPTER 30
In a fraction of a second, the Prince's face contorted bitterly in every way a face could as he silently expressed his displeasure at the Duke's assertion. But rather than engage the Duke further, he smiled crookedly and walked away.
"Prince Laith," the countess greeted the prince's reappearance warmly, a smile playing on her lips.
"Countess," Laith's voice was stiff, "may I have a word with Evelina?"
"Of course," the Countess said calmly, and she and the Earl walked over to the Duke. "Duke Alexander McCalister," the Countess smiled shyly, "it is such an honor to have you here," she said.
Her mother's voice was thick with excitement about meeting the Duke, but Evelina could not help the queasy feeling in her stomach about what could go wrong. The Duke was not to be trusted, and she was curious to see how the ongoing conversation between her mother and him would go from there.
"About yesterday..." The prince's words snapped Evelina's attention back to him.
