"Adrian!" The boy's eyes navigated over to his father as he spoke. "I was starting to think you wouldn't come." In front of him, was not a gray-haired man with a little of black to show his original hair color. His eyes weren't like the rest of the family. His eyes showed the dark brown that was passed only on his side of the family. He stood over the table arm wide to show his generosity. Or maybe it shows ignorance.
"I don't know why you think that?" He answered back as cold as ever. He never likes this loving junk. The king knew he was coming down, so asking Jaya to come get him was complete and utter nonsense. "There hasn't been a day I haven't come down." Just as he spoke, he took note of how nervous drops of sweat delegated its way onto King Veyron's face. Don't tell me I'm here for some bull crap.
"Sorry for the wait, your highness." Before any of the family could speak, an array of waitresses came into the dining room to place their designated trays. In front of him sat a perfectly seared goose along with many vegetables and fruit to balance the harvest. "With all that being said, I hope you all enjoy your meals." Nothing was heard in the dining room other than the sound of her heels hitting the floor. Adrian smiled. It wasn't usual for his father to be this quiet, usually you could hear him drinking and groveling a mile away. What was different now? He watched as the old man fidgeted with the fork along the plate, if it wasn't for the fact he enjoyed the man's uncomfort, he probably would have hated the sound of screeching it made.
"Uhhhhhhhh," Adrian looked at Vi, whose head peered down the bird in front of her. "I hate goose. It's so… starchy."
"I don't know why you hate it." Arian began to speak, finally entertaining her delusions. "Your poor friends eat it all the time. When they can catch it, that is."
"Dammit, Adrian! Why do you always have to make fun of my friends?"
"Ask them why they're always stealing from us!" Feeling defeated, she looked over to her father for support.
"Adrian, that's quite enough," In the end he stood behind her. No matter what, he always stood behind her. He didn't know if it was because she was a girl, or the fact that he hated his only son, but nothing and I mean nothing, made King Veyron have his back.
"Oh I forgot." The aggravated child threw his hand up to notify his father. "This is the savior of poor people right here. No matter how much they steal, he is right with them no matter what!" People of the castle had now made their way out of the kitchen and into where they were. Just like last time. Adrian grabbed a hold of a glass of wine and tossed it in the direction of one of the maids. Get the hell out of here. Can't we have a family moment for once?
"Rainy," Viola Scooted from her seat to grab on to the others sleeve. "You're making a scene." But he didn't answer. All he did was stare down his father, who stared right back at him. He thinks I'm stupid. He thinks I'll just stand there while he leaves me and Vi to raise ourselves. He thinks there were some… loose change.
"All you do is take, have you ever thought about that?" Although angry, Adrian spoke in a low tone. "Every time you give those… mongrels something, you leave us behind." Silence began to strike the room like lighting. Was he going to say something back? Was he tired? Angry? Disappointed?
"Is that how you feel, son?" His voice was deep enough to cause shivers down the boy's spine and by looking at Vi, she was going through the same thing. "Answer me, son? Since you feel it is necessary to speak like a man. Do you feel that way?" dammit. Adrian lowered his head to look at the floor. This is what he wanted, right? He wanted his father's reaction. Now he had it.
"I do feel that way. You treat us like loose change, okay." tears started to swell up in his eyes. He thought he would be yelled at. He prepared to be locked in his room, not this. What was this? This wasn't his father, it couldn't be. Still looking at the floor. He could hear the sound of the farthest chair being scooted so he could stand up. With each step, Adrian could feel his stomach swallowing itself more and more of disappointment. The weight of his father's hand sunk its way into his shoulder.
"Let's talk about more in my office later tonight." His words caused a wave of panic to surge through Adrian's mind. His office. The hell hole on the East wing. The place where he saw them. The place where he realized his life was a lie. The place where he realized everything was fabricated to sympathize with those… barbarians.
"Okay" Adrian tried to keep himself together, but his voice still quaked as he spoke. Although it was obvious the king sensed it. He simply nodded and made his way into his quarters. Why did he feel this way? He shouldn't be scared of a mere man! He took a deep breath as he finally realized the man was gone.
"I can't believe you did that." Adrian looked to see Viola looking at him sharply. "You could've been grounded. Worse!" He scoffed.
"Of course I did. He'd been ignoring me for who knows how long." At first, he expected to be admired by her, but the sadness in her face showed something else. The sister silently stood up and walked past him only saying one thing.
"You guys will be closer than I'll ever be."
