Chapter 37 - Chapter 34 - the battle at crystal brook

The captain was sitting inside a tent in the freezing tundra forest outside Icewind Bastion, holding a communication crystal in his hand. "Private Ron, can you hear us? Private Ron?" he spoke into the crystal, but there was no answer.

"He's not answering?" said the man standing beside him.

"Fuck," the captain exclaimed before reaching for another crystal. "Contact the light cavalry unit. We leave as soon as possible."

"Yes, sir," the man responded before rushing out of the tent.

The captain poured his mana into the crystal and spoke into it. "Sir, we have a report."

"What is it, Gervais?" a voice came from the other end.

"I think the barbarians are using ambush tactics against us," Captain Gervais replied.

"What?" the general exclaimed.

"I find it hard to believe as well...they know exactly where we are going and who is stationed where," Gervais empathized with the general's reaction.

"Hmmm, describe your situation right now," the general asked after a moment's pause.

"We just received a report from one of our scouts. He said that a horde of 300 barbarians was escorting supplies for the barbarian armies," Gervais explained, elaborating on Private Ron's report.

"300 escorts? Isn't that too few?" the general asked.

"That's the same reaction I had, which led me to believe that they are planning an ambush," Gervais replied. "What further assured me was that Private Ron informed me that the escorts had started to set up camp."

"It is definitely an ambush then. Can you connect me to Private Ron? I would like to know more about the location," the general said after a moment of thought.

"Unfortunately, sir, contact with Private Ron has been abruptly cut. He was about to say something, but the communication cut before he could complete what he was saying," Gervais replied in a depressing tone.

"Fuck...it's safe to assume that the private is dead then," the general exclaimed before taking a brief pause.

"What do you want us to do, sir?" Gervais asked.

"I'm asking for support from two cavalry units and a wyvern unit. You wait for them and attack once they arrive," the general instructed.

"Understood, sir," Gervais said as he pulled his mana from the crystal, ready to prepare for the upcoming attack.

"Haaaah, this is about to get brutal," captain Gervais thought to himself.

Captain Gervais stepped out of his tent, his mind racing with the knowledge of an impending ambush. "Haaaah, this is about to get brutal," he thought to himself. He took a deep breath before addressing his soldiers.

"ATTENTION!" he bellowed, his voice ringing through the tundra forest. His soldiers immediately stopped what they were doing and turned towards him.

"I HAVE RECEIVED A REPORT FROM PRIVATE RON, AND HE HAS GIVEN US THE LOCATION OF WHERE WE BELIEVE THE ENEMY PLANS TO DO AN AMBUSH," he explained, his tone serious. "WE WILL BE ASSISTING THE WYVERN AND LIGHT CAVALRY UNITS DURING THIS CONFLICT. UNDERSTOOD?" he asked, scanning his troops for any signs of hesitation or doubt.

"SIR, YES, SIR!" his soldiers responded in unison, their voices strong and determined.

"GOOD. THEN GET YOUR EQUIPMENT READY, AND DO IT QUICK. IT WON'T BE LONG BEFORE WE HAVE TO DEPART," Gervais commanded before swiftly dispersing his unit to prepare for battle.

Meanwhile, the General urgently contacted the Grand Duke to inform him of the situation. "My Duke, we have a situation," he began. "It seems like there will be a fight at Crystal Brook. We need support from one unit of your Wyvern unit, and two Light Cavalry units. I have already spoken with the Light Cavalry units, and their troops will be arriving soon."

The Grand Duke, Dante, listened carefully, his expression growing increasingly grave. "Brief me on the situation," he demanded, his voice low and commanding.

The General quickly explained the details of the ambush and the suspicious knowledge the barbarians seemed to possess. "Hmmm, for them to know such a great deal of our strategy… something is off," Dante muttered to himself, deep in thought.

The General waited for further orders, but Dante seemed to be lost in contemplation. "Your majesty?" the General prompted.

"Right, I'm sending Patricus to clean this up. Don't worry," Dante said decisively, snapping out of his thoughts. The General nodded in understanding before cutting the call, knowing that the Grand Duke had everything under control.

25 minutes later a little ways away from the crystal brook, captain Gervais and his unit of scouts stood along with 2 light cavalry units, while a third wyvern unit observed them from the sky.

While everyone was nervous of their first conflict, Gervais approached the leader of one of the light cavalry units, "We are ready sir Hugh"

"Understood…on my mark" upon listening to the scout's words the cavalry captain nodded and looked at his wyvern counterpart and announced."CHAAAAAAARGEEEE" he screamed, with his lance in his arm, and his horse running as fast as it could.

*whoooooooooooooo* while the soldiers of grand duke's army launched their ambush, the barbarians sounded their horns, announcing the start of the battle.

"AGHHHHHHHHHHHH" both sides let out war cries, as they confronted each other.

"FUCKING GODLESS HEATHENS" one of the barbarians screamed as he ripped off the head of a soldier from the grand duke's army, as he did so, the spine of the soldier came out along with the soldier's head.

"DIE FILTHY BARBARIANS," said a soldier from the light cavalry as he thrust his spear through the barbarian's head and crushed his skull using a tree trunk

"ATTTACKKKKK," said the barbarian leader, after hearing which the barbarians pulled out pikes to defend from the incoming light cavalry assault.

"SAVEEEEEE MEEEEE" one of the soldiers screamed as his horse's head was pierced with a pike leading him to fall and get crushed by the incoming horses.

"AGHGHHHH" screamed another soldier as another spear went straight through his horse and into his head.

"DIEEEEEE" screamed a barbarian as he started attacking the soldiers who had now fallen because their horses got scared of the pike wall

"AGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH" the grand duke's soldiers screamed as they launched their counter-attack, with spear and sword in hand the scout units slowly started to kill off the pike units, when the beasts who had not attacked yet started to come at them.

"FUCK THE BEASTS ARE COMING" screamed a soldier as he shoved his spear through the throats of one of the incoming wolf-like beasts.

"GAAAAAH" another screamed as his head got hit off by one of the wolf beasts, leaving nothing but scraps of bones on his now crushed skull.

*ROOOOOAARRR*

*AWWOOOOOOO*

*HAAAARGHHHH*

The beasts screamed as they started to go into a frenzy killing soldiers left and right.

"KILLL THEM, LEAVE NO SOUL ALIVE" screamed the other light cavalry commander, as he covered himself in mana and rammed himself into the wall of beasts that had now formed, crushing them thoroughly

"FUCK THOSE BASTARDS OVER" he screamed as his horse crushed the skulls of the beasts it jumped over.

"AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" the barbarians started to scream now that the beast wall and pike wall were breached leaving them no defense against the incoming light cavalry

"FUCKKKKKKKKK" screamed another barbarian as he chopped off the legs of the horse one of the light cavalry soldiers was riding before breaking the soldier's spear, and piercing the soldier's heart.

"SAAAAVVEEEEMEEEEEE" the soldier screamed, but no salvation came to him as the spear ran through his head.

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE THOSE" one of the wyvern knights screamed at a group of beasts that seemed to be growing in size weirdly, as he ran through a group of barbarians and beasts crashing them, under the mana-covered wyvern, spreading their remains everywhere.

"THE FUCKING BEASTS ARE TRANSFORMING," he said as he shoved his spear into the heads of one of the transforming monsters.

"AGHHHHH, SAVEEE MEEEE" a soldier screamed as his leg was bitten off by one of these now transformed beasts, no monsters, the things had bones poking out of their bodies, and were far too big to be called simple beasts, their bodies had been mangled far too much to be called beasts.

"AAGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" another soldier screamed as he ran away from the incoming group of monsters.

"WHAT THE FUCK ARE THESE THINGS" he screamed, but unable to run away from the monsters, he was simply crushed by one of their paws."AGAGHAAHH"

"KILLL THEM, AHAHAHAHA, SHOW THOSE BASTARDS THE SHIT WE GOT FROM THE CHIEF" the leader of the barbarians screamed as he went around the battlefield killing as many poor souls he could find, from shoving a spear down their throat to piercing their hearts, and splitting their heads, the barbarian leader used every technique in the book to kill as many soldiers as he could.

"FUCK WHY ARE THESE THINGS ATTACKING US" one of the barbarians screamed as he ran away from the monsters that were chasing him, but just as with the duke's soldiers he was unable to outrun the monsters, and eventually tripped, "AGHHHHHH" he screamed in pain as his body was slowly dismembered.

While the entire battlefield was in chaos, due to the monsters that the barbarians had brought, Patricus the leader of the wyvern unit asked the mages that were accompanying them to launch their attacks, "NOW LAUNCH YOUR MAGIC" he screamed at the top of his lungs, after which an absolute nightmare began for the barbarians.

*BOOOM BOOM BOOM* the magician's spells caused havoc across the battlefield, and even if the spells did not kill the barbarians, they distracted them enough, to give the light cavalry, and wyvern units enough time to start a slaughter.

"FUCK THEY HAD MAGICIANS WHAT THE FUCK WAS THE CHIEF DOING, WHY DIDNT WE KNOW ABOUT THIS" the leader of the barbarian horde screamed as he looked at the sight of his warriors getting blown to bits by fireballs raining from the sky.

"RUSH IN THEY ARE STAGGERED" the light cavalry unit leader screamed as he rushed in to try to take the horde leader's head.

"USE THIS TO KILL AS MANY AS YOU CAN" he ordered his soldiers as he approached the tattooed man.

"FOR THE WHITE LIOONNNNN" the other soldiers screamed as they ran through fire to kill as many barbarians as they physically could.

"KIILLLLLLLL" the duke's soldiers chanted as they ran in killing the barbarians who were now scared shitless, as most of them had never seen a magician in their life.

"RETREATT RETREAATT, THE ATTACK HAS FAILED" the barbarian leader shouted as he saw the light cavalry unit leader approaching him, and his horde falling apart.

"CHASE THEM, YIELD NO QUARTER" Hugh screamed at the top of his lungs, as he ran towards the barbarian leader.

"NO WAIIIT, IT COULD BE A TRAP" Patricus screamed as he descended to the ground with his wyvern.

"Whooo, understood sir," Hugh said as he calmed down and turned to his army."BOYSS WE DID IT, NOW WE RETURN TO CAMP" he shouted as he raised his spear.

"YEAAHHHHH" his soldiers shouted, the spirits of the soldiers was quite high due to their victory, the battle was not won without sacrifices.

half the light cavalry from one unit and a quarter from the other were both killed, in the initial charge against the barbarians who had used traps and pikes to get rid of the horsemen. Not only that, they even lost a sizeable chunk of the scouting unit. Beyond that the number of injured soldiers was ginormous. But even though the soldiers lost their friends or their limbs, they all had only one thought as Hugh announced the end of the battle… it was that THEY HAD WON.
