They were throwing balls filled with gunpowder capable of killing a group of people in a specific area it falls, the paladins try to approach the area but the smoke made it difficult for them to see where the balls were coming.
But they did try their best to slice it but unfortunately upon contact it blows up even if it's a sharp edge of a sword.
