Chapter 45 - Chapter 44

On the way home, Craig thought about Ferris's hand. Ferris would not make up a story like that. Even if he did, nothing else could explain what was happening with his left arm. He knew something was wrong with the West Coast, especially after what Brian had told him over the weekend about the demon activity, and all the other things that happened in the past. Craig started to fear for his family. He had so much on his plate at the moment, but he knew their safety meant much more than anything else. His mind drifted towards the conversation he had with Brian again. He wondered how long the two brothers were jailed and what would happen if they came out and realise that their house had been sold. He needed to go talk to Brian about Ferris's condition. Brian might have an answer or maybe know of someone who might be able to help. Craig knew he would have to watch his kids closely with all the bad influences around town. Why did Brian see his face in a dream two years ago? What did that mean? It made no sense. He still had no peace of mind that there was no information on the person they found on the R27. He needed to investigate that himself, but he had so little time to do all these things. He had so many questions and very few answers. Craig remembered Sarah. Something was bothering her when he had spoken to her earlier. She wanted to talk to him about something.

It was past dawn when Craig entered Saldanha. The streetlights cast lazy yellow cones on the main road. He was hoping for more family time by moving down to the coast, but they have less time than in the big city. He knew he had to do something about it soon otherwise things will start falling apart and that would be harder to fix than the relationship between him and Sarah. If he did not act in time, it might open a door for the kids to find closure somewhere else, somewhere dangerous and evil.

The lights flicked by when Craig thought he had noticed something tied to one of the light poles, but he could not be certain. If it was not for the slow sixty-kilometres-an-hour speed zone, he might have missed it. It could have been his imagination, but he wanted to be sure. Craig slowed down and turned back towards Vredenburg. Although turning here was illegal, Craig did not mind breaking the rules a little. There was not a single car in sight this time of the evening in any case. He drove for a short while and pulled over on the side of the road. He stepped out of the kombi and crossed the road towards the light poles on the island in the middle of the two lanes. Craig realised he had driven too far, but that was okay. It was a lovely evening. A slight chilly breeze rustled in the nearby palm trees. Craig started walking down the middle inspecting each pole. He noticed something on one of the poles ahead. It was a dark patch about one and a half meters from the ground. Craig could not quite make out exactly what it was. He got closer and knew immediately that something about it was not quite normal. It was an animal of some sort. Craig's heart sank. He could hear Brian's voice in his head about how the farm had been marked by rodents and animals before they were attacked by demons. Craig walked closer to the pole and knew that his worse fears had become a reality. A large cat had been cut open down the middle from the chest to the stomach. The animal had been spread open so that its intestines were visible. The guts of the animal hung freely while maggots already started doing their thing inside the chest area. The cat had been tied up to the pole by a barbwire cutting into the animal's neck. It had a bewildered look with its teeth sticking out of its open mouth. Its eyes were open and slightly sunken into its skull. Almost like the last image it had seen was horror. Craig looked behind him and realised how easy it was to miss something like this on a pole. It had almost been hidden by a palm tree and was most probably the reason why the slaughtered animal was still there. Craig got his phone from his pocket and took some photos. He wanted to show them to Brian. He knew evil was on the way, it was here already. He did not know how long it has been here, but he wondered how far it had spread. Saldanha had been marked once again, the same way Brian had told him their farm had been marked many years ago. Craig realised that he was in the middle of a point in time where history was in the process of repeating itself. He needed to find out more about these kids, and where everything started once more. He had to put an end to this madness. He realised that he had more responsibility than he had ever hoped for moving to a small coastal town.
