Serenity gives Zero one last glare before she turns on her heel. Lizzie quickly follows after her. She raises her gun, finger ready to pull the trigger. Before she can go any further, Zero puts a hand on her shoulder, "No more shots. You'll just bring more."
She looks over at where Serenity swings and smashes her bat against the back of Zombie heads. Finally noticing her presence, the ones closest to her turn to bite her. They groan and growl, hands swiping at what they can.
"Then what should I do?" Lizzie asks.
"Why don't you run like you wanted to?" Zero snorts and drops his hand. "It's the easiest way out, no? Or you can stay and make sure your friends get out alive." He shrugs. He grabs the handle of his sword and pulls it out of his sheath. He walks to Serenity and takes up her right. He slices neck after neck, creating a pile of heads beside him.
Serenity turns to him and smiles, "I thought you didn't want to help?"
"Just focus on not getting bit," Zero grunts out.
Smiling, she lifts her bat, adrenaline pumping enough to distract her from the strain on her shoulder, and swings it down. It cracks against a skull, bone crushing at the force. Blood squeezes out as the rotting body falls.
She backs away from grabby hands, nails a dark green as they scratch at the air where she once was. She raises her bat to swing again, but pauses when a thin blade slices the crown to the zombie's head.
"If you actually want to help them, stop killing aimlessly." Zero says. "We want to reach them, then we can fight them off together."
She nods her head, he makes sense. If she continues how she was, it would take forever until they reached the other two in the middle, and she doesn't know how much longer they can last.
Serenity scans the hoard with fast eyes and spots a path between the dead that can get them to the others. With her destination in mind, she smashes her bat against the foul man in her way. Besides her, Zero is quick to slice and stab as the two of them work their way to Calvin and the other.
"What are you doing here?" Calvin growls when he notices Serenity and Zero a few feet away.
"Hello!" Serenity smiles. She smashes her bat against a crooked neck and watches as the head tumbles to the ground. "You look like you need help."
Calvin grunts out, not offering a reply as he stabs at a zombie that claws at him. He braces a foot against it's midriff, and yanks his weapon out with a squelch.
"Why are there suddenly so many?" The brown haired boy asks. Serenity still doesn't know his name, and makes a mental note to ask once they're free.
She can't help but wonder the same thing. While she and Zero has run into a handful of the dead, the small town has been relatively scarce. Here, there must be over two dozen crowding around the two.
"Who the fuck knows?" Calvin bites back as he pushes a zombie that comes too close to biting his arm.
Serenity pushes past two rotting bodies and reaches the small circle Calvin and the other guy is trapped in. She doesn't have time to revel in her small victory before sharp fingers dig into her shoulder.
"Ah!" She cries as her knees buckle and she crashes to the ground. The smell of decaying meat breathes down at her, and she looks up to the sight of black and green teeth. They're chipped away, the gums bleeding as discolored saliva drips on her forehead. She gags, the stench making her eyes water.
She flinches when a blade stabs into its gaping mouth. It isn't as sharp as Zero's sword, the silver blade curving rather than sitting straight. She tilts her head back and watches as Calvin rips his weapon back out.
"Get up!" He barks at her, he swivels around, and fights off the hoard, "Don't just fucking sit there!"
She blinks, trying to get rid of the tears that blurr her vision. She stands back up, whimpering at the burning that runs down her arm. The cloth is wet and dark, blood oozing down her bicep.
Zero reaches her side, and cuts a head of the closest zombie.
"Don't you dare stop now." He growls at her, "It's your fault we're even in this mess."
She sucks in a breath and glances behind her. The four of them are back to back, each fighting off the dead in every direction. He's right, if she stops now, they'll all be doomed. Neither of them can afford to mess up. Zero slices and cuts, Serenity smashes and swings, Calvin stabs and rips, while the brown haired guy shoots off his weapon in rapid pulls of the trigger.
"We'll never get out like this," Zero grunts as he stabs a zombie through its red tinted eye. He yanks his blade back and it squelches as the dead falls to the floor. No matter how many rotten bodies fall at their feet, more take their place.
"You should've just left us," Calvin pants out, sweat drips down his face and neck, drenching his long sleeve shirt.
The sound of metal banging against metal reaches their ears, and Serenity turns around to look over the mass of zombies.
On the other side of the hoard, where she and Zero left her, Lizzie slams a metal pole against a pipe that sticks out of the ground.
"What the fuck is she doing now?" The brown haired boy bites out.
"Come and get me!" Lizzie shouts, eyes blazing as she glares at the hoard.
"Damn it, she's going to get herself killed!" Calvin grounds out between gritted teeth.
The back of the crowd shifts, attention drawn to the sudden noise behind them. At the sight of fresh meat, the dead shuffle towards her, jaws snapping and arms stretched out.
"She's helping," Serenity pants, whacking a head as she watches the scene.
With the sudden distraction, Serenity does her best to ignore the pain in her shoulder and fights harder. Her swings give away to more force as she smashes against bones and flesh.
"Hurry!" The brown haired boy hisses, "We have to get to her." He pulls the trigger to his weapon and curses when nothing shoots out of the hole in the barrel. "Fuck, shit," He stuffs the metal weapon into his pocket and pulls out a blade. Its different from Zeros and Calvins. The handle is longer, and the blade itself is square in shape with a sharp edge.
He starts to chop and hack, needing to pull and yank his blade out of severed heads.
They continue to work together, with a new urgency, forcing a path between them and Lizzie.
She's climbed up the pole again, kicking down at the hands that grab at her ankle.
They manage to reach the bottom of it, pushing back the dead.
"Jump down!" Calvin shouts above him.
"We have to make a run for it." Zero says, "We can't fight them off forever."
"Right." Calvin nods his head.
Lizzie climbs down and jumps when she reaches the last pedestal. She stands on the middle of the circle the created around her, weaponless as Zero ordered her not to shoot her gun again.
"You don't look so good," She says as she watches Serenity sway.
She doesn't feel too good either. The cloth around her wound is fully drenched, the pain is bad it's hard for her to focus on anything else.
"We can make our way to the other side." She pants, nodding to an opening that leads to an open road. She leans forward, bat swinging carelessly as she smacks the face of a zombie.
"Okay." The brown haired guy nods his head.
Serenity shakes her head and blinks, fighting the dizziness. They force their way through the hoard, the sweat gathering in Serenity's black suit is damp, sticking to her skin.
Her shoulder burns with an intensity that she struggles to lift her bat over and over.
"I can't last much longer." She says to Zero, breath coming out in heavy pants. She remembers when he first rescued her and how she passed out on him. Will it happen again? And if she does, will they be able to make it out like last time?
He looks at her, blood splattered across his face. "Shit, just hold on," He says, watching as she stumbles. "Lizzie, take her bat. You," He nods at the brown haired boy, "Can you swing that ax and let her lean on you at the same time?"
The guys face scrunches up in a scowl but nods his head. Serenity passes her bat to Lizzie and wraps an arm over the guys shoulder. She tries not to lean on him so much, and focuses on picking up her feet to move.
