Chapter 19
"Makyan Tribes"
"Aron penggulan tah segunah," announced Datu Yahfoufi.
(We have something important to discuss today.)
"Nyeba vasi so kwanah anen," said one of the chieftains.
(Maybe it's about those things.)
"Sakwana eh nyeba salangguni," added one.
(I think it's about the ceremony.)
Datu Yahfoufi summoned a meeting with thirteen chiefs throughout Makyan. This is to commemorate their upcoming tradition or revelry in the subsequent month.
They will once again witness the resurrection of the Blood Moon. It is a symbol of unity and confederacy of their three Gods: the Moon, Sun, and Earth (Datu Othello Musain).
They need to gather at the Makyan center to carry out the ideologies of their devotees. It usually arises after forty to fifty months.
Besides having to offer up rare creatures, they also have maneuver activities that show their decadent civilization and devout beliefs.
"Magånkamê pagkūyågkūyåg sāh mawlēya karågyan. Pāngkāt Makükü rùmen eh makåkwå sāh tayūntåy." — said one of the chieftains.
(My tribesmen nearly won the previous tournament. Once again, as a Makükü Tribe, I have brought forth our promising warriors to participate.)
"Hahaha! Adåyakå mambø salakåmê egåpagåyêun Sånggœ." — interacted with one.
(Hahaha! Sango will be appointed from my tribe.)
They have a corresponding tournament where the bravest in each district compete. The thirteen leaders will select a warrior, and they will represent their district.
The champion is nicknamed "Sango". He is the God of revenge, protection, and social order, as well as a great warrior. The champ will have the reward of speaking with the Moon God, the Sun God, and their Makyan God, Datū Mūsain.
Mawū-Lisåh is a twin deity believed to be both male and female, the children of Goddess Nana Bulukū. This deity represents the Moon (Mawū) and Sun (Lisåh) deities.
The Makyans believe that they are responsible for the world order. Datū Mūsain started as a messenger of the Gods and ultimately became one of the Gods.
"Nakåwmåba selån lēngun?" — asked Datū Mūsain.
(Have all the leaders of thirteen districts arrived?)
"Owãy Datū. Pangatan kanêllan lēngun," answered his main servant, wearing a white scarf folded on his head.
(Yes, dear Datu. We are only waiting for you.)
"Talōy kasēlan, arên satemãn pangåndayå êndūako mangåy," he ordered.
(I'll just do one more ritual, and then I'll be there.)
***
(Before Ahn-Ahn was captured…)
Sixth District of the North.
"Ngubani abaza kuba yinxalenye yomthendeleko? Ndifuna isithili sethu siphumelele kule sizini!" announced their leader.
(Who will be part of the Feast? I want our district to win this season!)
"Ndiya kuzibonakalisa kuba ndingoyena unamandla nokhawulezayo ekulweni kwisizwe sethu," advised Shuaiba. His body is masculine, and he trembles when he speaks.
(I will present myself since I am the strongest and fastest in fighting in our tribe.)
"Asiyi kwamkela uShuaiba. Sifuna wena ecaleni kwethu. Ngubani oza kukhusela chieftain?" responded one of the elders.
(We will not accept Shuaiba. We need you by our side. Who will protect the Chieftain?)
"Ewe, ndiyaqonda. Kodwa ukuba ndiza kuphumelela izibonelelo zayo kwizizwe zethu," said Shuaiba.
(Yes, I understand. But if I succeed, it will benefit our districts.)
"Enkosi ngenjongo yakho entle. Kodwa izizwe sele zigqibile ukuba ngubani oza kuba ngummeli wethu," said their Chieftain.
(Thank you for your good intentions. But the tribes have already decided who will be our representative.)
"Iya kuba ngubani?" he asked.
(Who will it be?)
"Mna!" someone responded out of nowhere.
(Me!)
They decided that Shoroqa would represent their district. She is a woman from the Adnani tribe, whose face is covered, and she does not conform to the traditional appearance of her race. However, she needs to demonstrate her fighting skills as she is the first woman to compete in this prestigious event.
Shoroqa does not belong to any rank of the "Earth, Sun, or Moon Warriors", but she is the best one with the determination to battle in the tournament. All who participate in it are destined to die.
"Eli lixesha lokubuyisela imbeko kubazali bam," murmured Shoroqa.
(This is the time that I can restore the honor of my parents.)
This is also the chance for her to rejuvenate the honor of her parents, whose identity was engulfed due to an erroneous decision. She also wants to speak to the three Gods to answer the question that only they know the solution to. She has to be victorious against them!
Unfortunately, she will face the undisputed winner from District Uno for the third time. He will once again represent their district and also the highest rank of the "Sun Warriors". His name is Datu Nenad, the second son of Datū Mūsain.
***
"So pānūn dün súh parãgyan tanü?" asked Datū Mūsain.
(What is the update on the ceremony to be held?)
"Ammå nakatïdtū dên langøn," responded Datū Nenad.
(Father, everything is according to your will.)
Two days before the ceremony, everyone prepares things to do for the upcoming activity. Somebody is arranging large stones to be positioned, and they are painted black and contain the same structure that symbolizes the God of the Sun, Moon, and Earth, or as it is called, the Trinity. Torches were applied to the barricades.
"Tidtō nulangūn eh-mangå karnë anēn, marakêl tanū ged," reminded the Chieftain of District Five.
(Make sure that the slaughtered meat is more than enough for thousands of devotees attendees.)
"Adūnpan mawmå salekatanō, Datū," answered back one of the workers.
(More meat to come, dear Datu.)
There were also immense piles of hippopotamus meat, rodents, platypus, and human corpses. These are the meats they will prepare for the upcoming shindig.
Someone is also arranging a rostrum where the Datu and Mawū-Lisa will sit in the very center. Behind him were his two sons, Datū Yahfōūfi and Datū Nenad, along with their wives and children. The thirteen chiefs of each district will sit in the lower part.
"Huyã!!! Engatë kanën!!! Umanykå mapassã nengkã namba, himataãyån kusekah!" — shouted Nuwaiseeb (Chieftain of District eleven).
(Hey!!! Take care of that!!! If you break or scratch it, I will kill you.)
Statues of the images of their three gods were also erected at the three intersections of the arena. Beneath them were the Petunia Black Velvet Flowers, representing death, and the Daffodils, symbolizing rebirth and new beginnings.
In the very center, next to the wall of the Donjon, stood the Makya tree, known as the "Tree of Life and Death." When you look at it, it appears as a dead tree with only branches. It was almost as tall as the Donjon, and its roots were enormous. The tree is mysterious because its leaves and blossoms only appear spontaneously on the day of this festival or during an eclipse.
According to legend, the Makya Tree, also known as the Tree of Life and Death, connects the three Makyan Gods. It embodies the afterlife and the connection between earth and heaven.
The Makya Tree symbolizes the duality of existence, representing both the cycle of life and the inevitability of death.
In all tribes in Makya Territory, this considerable tree is seen as a sacred and mystical entity. It is often depicted as a massive tree with branches reaching towards the heavens and roots extending deep into the earth. The branches represent the connection between the physical and spiritual realms, while the roots symbolize the grounding and nourishment provided by the earth.
They believe that the Makya Tree is associated with the cycle of life, growth, and renewal. It represents the interconnectedness of all living beings and the continuous flow of energy and vitality. It is believed to provide sustenance, healing, and wisdom to those who seek its guidance.
On the other hand, some people believe that the Makya Tree represents the inevitable end of life. It symbolizes mortality, decay, and the passage into the afterlife. It serves as a reminder of the impermanence of existence and the need to embrace the present moment.
For the Makyan Tribes, the Tree of Life and Death is a powerful symbol that encompasses the dual nature of existence. It reminds them of the interconnectedness of all things and the importance of embracing both life and death as integral parts of the human experience.
They mostly believe that the bond and love for the Makya Tree is such that the Makyans sincerely believe that the actual trees are their ancestors, as their souls are the gatekeepers to the afterlife. Because of this, the Makya Tree is sacred in Makyan culture.
***
"Magåndun mapasåd sugamūt koaniya." — Datū Mūsain talked to himself.
(I'm running out of antidote. This is what keeps me strong and powerful.)
Here, Datū obtains the elements for his medicines and poisons. But its alternate is a soul so that it always glorifies good results. Ever since they found out about Ha-O's status, when they die, their souls vanish.
In their theory, it may be a myth against their belief. Trinity and the chiefs of each district do not want to lose a devotee in this possibility. This mystery is sealed to its members and must not be disseminated around the world. So, if feasible, all Ha-O's should be suppressed.
It is still disheartening to see their aspiration to control the whole world in order to spread the true word of God. They firmly believe that their religion is the right one and should be followed obediently. As long as there is no unity among the people in the world, there will be no end to the chaos that the world experiences, ultimately leading to its destruction.
***
"Kanū lengūn! Nændēnsu Dios," announced Datū Nenad.
(Get ready, everyone! Pay homage to our dear Gods.)
Wanga uThixo wethu, angasisikelela sonke!
Wanga uThixo wethu, angasisikelela sonke!
Wanga uThixo wethu, angasisikelela sonke!
(May our God bless us all!)
The day the offerings arrived was also the day the tournament itself began. Before the ceremony began, all the devotees who participated prayed to the three Gods present. Everyone present knelt on the ground and then prostrated themselves where they were seated.
The three Gods, worshipped by all their devotees, were thrilled with the steps taken by the Makyans in worshipping them.
***
Datu Nenad announced that Datū Mūsain would speak first before the ceremony began, so everyone was waiting to hear what he would say.
"My dear tribesmen, I stand before you today to deliver a message of great importance. As your messenger of the Gods, it is my duty to guide and lead you on the right path. I have been chosen by a higher power to deliver this message, and I ask that you listen with open hearts and minds."
"Firstly, I want to express my gratitude for your unwavering support and dedication. Your faith in me and our cause is what gives me strength and motivates me to continue this journey. Together, we have faced many challenges and obstacles, but we have always emerged stronger and more united."
"However, I must address a growing concern within our community. It has come to my attention that there is a lack of unity and harmony among us. I hope these events will strengthen our bonds. We must remember that we are all part of the same family, bound by our shared beliefs and values. It is crucial that we treat each other with respect and kindness, regardless of our differences."
"Furthermore, I urge you to remain steadfast in your faith. In times of doubt and uncertainty, it is our faith that will guide us through the darkness. Trust in the teachings that have been passed down to us and hold onto the values that define us as a Makyans."
"Lastly, I want to remind you of the importance of spreading love and compassion. Our mission is not only to better ourselves, but also to make a positive impact on the world around us. Let us be beacons of light in a world that often feels consumed by darkness. Through our actions and words, let us inspire others to join us on this journey of love and peace."
"In conclusion, my dear followers, I implore you to stay true to our cause. Let us stand together, united in our faith and unwavering in our commitment. Together, we can overcome any obstacle and create a better world for ourselves and future generations."
"Thank you for your attention, and may the blessings of our higher power be upon you all."
After he said that, everyone cheered. Everyone was happy, and some felt tears of joy.
'Masū mapulō ged edtalō nengka, Othello,"—told Mawū
(You have spoken for too long, Othello.)
"Qalisa ukhuphiswano kuqala, andikwazi kulinda," said Lisåh.
(Start the contest first, I'm impatient.)
"Ukuba yiloo nto uyifunayo, Thixo wethu," answered Datū Mūsain. He bowed while talking to Mawū-Lisåh.
(It will be obeyed, our God.)
He immediately signalled Datū Nenad to start the contest.
***
The standard of the tournament is that twelve contestants will compete in the same arena. They can carry their weapons inside.
The strongest will survive, and whoever conquers them all will challenge the former champion Datū Nenad. Whoever wins between them will be crowned champion and will be named the new "Sango".
Shoroqa is the only female contender from district Sais. She is also the only participant who does not use a weapon, except for a tattoo on her left palm that symbolizes the sunrise.
The representative of District Nueve is the heftiest opponent. They are quite identical to Datū Mūsain in the size of the abdomen, but the only difference is that he has long hair and three eyes.
It is also one of the unique and first times that the participant from District Dos, who is a kid. Tiny horns grew on his head, and two more horns could be seen on both sides of his cheeks. He crawls while strolling with his chain harpoon weapon.
The other players also entered the arena carrying their respective weapons symbolizing their tribe and district. So, when they announced that the match was about to begin, Makyan's reaction was visibly keen.
After all the participants had been introduced, everyone cheered! They were eager to witness the match.
"Mawuqale umlo!" shouted another guy.
(Let the fight begin!)
"Awoo! Awoo!"
"Yilwa! Yilwa! Yilwa!" screamed everyone.
(Fight! Fight. Fight.)
District Otso immediately slaughtered the District Onse contestant with his primitive weapon, a blowgun. Because there was poison attached, the contestant's mouth immediately foamed, and then he passed away.
District Tres, armed with stone clubs, faced off against District Dyes, armed with "Bōla." Stone clubs are often carved from a solid piece of rock, created by attaching a round rock to the jawbone of a large animal and turning it into a handle. These weapons are used by the Makabolō tribe.
The "Bōla" is a class of throwing weapons made of weights at the end of attached ropes, often used to catch by hanging on. The weights are made of stone, clay, or leather and are filled with stones, gravel, or sand. This is a carving of the G'laan tribe.
District Dosi used spears and war shields, while his opponent from District Dos used a chain harpoon. District Kuatro was armed with stone tomahawks and fought against District Cinco, who wielded war hatches.
Meanwhile, District Syete used a sword made of elephant ivory and faced District Nuebe armed only with a small knife. Shoroqa of District Sais faced District Trese with bows and arrows.
The Makyans were very pleased to witness the combat to the death, with each district supporting its contender. They screamed, cheered, and were stupefied by the display of skill. Chiefs also laughed whenever they saw themselves as superior to other districts.
"Diren e nyabå matidtô, talañån tarûn e nyabå, Datū," said Lisåh gently.
(This is not good, let's stop this, Datū.)
"Di karün tuntayē, Datū," said Mawū.
(Don't mind here, Datū.)
"Ngên ehkyognū tubay, panggulãn kūh," Datū Mūsain answered.
("Whatever you wish, I will follow.")
But instantly…
The Datū just stared at them and then veered around, his gaze back to the combatants in the arena. The Sun Goddess (Lisåh) said to stop this ceremony, and the Moon God (Mawū) immediately blocked it. It is an insight of a God that you cannot ascertain what it means.
In a few minutes, there were only three left standing: Wizzy J. from District Syete, the youngest Sonny from District Dos, and the only girl from District Sais, Shoroqa.
"Elåynu, masü sikitånu tlō bo enya nasamã! Hahaha," Sonny spoke.
(Check, it seems we're the only three left in the arena! Hahaha.)
"Andizuvuma ukuba singaqhubeki nomlo wethu. Kufuneka ndibe ngu Sango," Shoroqa whispered, annoyed.
(I will not agree to stop our fight. I have to be Sango.)
Khangela! Igazi inyanga! Wizzy J. yelled.
(Look! The Blood Moon.)
Napansin din ng marami ang biglaang paglabas ng Blood Moon.
(Many also noticed the sudden appearance of the Blood Moon.)
Their battle was halted when the Blood Moon unexpectedly appeared at the wrong time, causing all but the three Gods to fall to their knees.
"Ammã, Ngen inambå?" Amad Yusep pointed to the sky.
(My Father, what is that?)
They all turned their attention to a burning object approaching them. Quickly, their worship was interrupted by what they initially mistook for a comet heading towards the arena. However, as it drew nearer, they realized it was a spaceship—the very spaceship that the Ciboro Warriors rode on.
"🪈✨✨✨"
Datū Yahfōūfi was able to prevent the spaceship from falling towards them with only his flute. He stopped the speeding spaceship by playing his flute. This is his unique ability that can hypnotize any type of creature, regardless of what they are.
Most of the Makyans were flabbergasted and staggered. They thought there would be another explosion from the comet, just like what happened centuries ago.
Even Wamaro and his siblings were still dizzy; they were struggling to get out and breathe some fresh air. They were surprised to notice the Makyans in various mesmerized forms, trapped in their positions.
"We… We are here…" muttered Wamaro.
