She had never really felt fear before, at least not like this. Now, for the first time, she knew what it meant to be terrified. Her heart racing like it had been hit by a lighten bolt. It was just like any other night, and if she had learned anything in her eight years as a hunter, it was to never let her guard down. A supernatural creature could pop out of anywhere, and there was only one rule: always expect the unexpected.
She had battled different supernatural creatures over the years, ranging from shape shifters to vampires and even demons. She had always come out unscathed and was always prepared for the worst-case scenario. At the age of six, she could assemble a pistol. She killed her first shape shifter when she was eight. Her family were descendants of a long line of hunters, whose job it was to protect the natural world from the supernatural and maintain balance. She was born with the instincts of a hunter and had done most of what even her siblings couldn't do. Some might call her skilled or brave, but that would be an understatement.
She didn't look particularly buff or strong, but she had a few scars that didn't detract from her beauty. She wasn't intimidating to anyone or anything, and that might be why most supernatural creatures underestimated her. She never took any chances, whether to flaunt or gloat, and she never wasted time before going for the kill. If she saw an opportunity, she took it.
But tonight, she was terrified. She didn't know why, but anyone could literally hear her heart beating from a mile away. She tried her best to calm down, but she couldn't. She had been pacing all day since she came back from school, trying to wrap her head around what she was about to do. She couldn't even form words on her lips. She had tried to find solutions in her combat manual, even though she knew it was a waste of time. She just wanted to do something.
She hadn't noticed when it had started to get dark. For the first time in her life, she didn't know what weapons to take. A gun wouldn't come in handy, nor would her daggers. Maybe she would settle for poison darts or her subtle electric gloves. The gloves had enough juice to take down a full-grown werewolf, but the only flaw was that you only got one shot.
She was lost in thought when her sister came in.
"Yo, what's up?" her sister said.
She looked up at her sister, her face looking like it was about to burst into tears. She had never cried for anyone, not even when her brother was killed by a vampire while hunting. She had just made sure that the vampire didn't survive the next hour after she found out.
"It's just a date, gal. Get yourself together and stop acting like a baby. Besides, it's almost eight. He'll be here soon," her sister said, laughing before walking out.
"Almost eight!" she screamed as she rushed into the shower.
"It's just a date," she told herself.
Well, it wasn't really a date. They were just going to hang out at the carnival. He was their new neighbor, and he and his parents had just moved in three months ago. He had asked her yesterday after school if she would like to go to the carnival with him. She was dumbfounded and confused. She was someone who expected anything and everything, and she could even predict when they were going to have a pop quiz yet she hadn't seen this coming. She was walking home with her sister when he walked up to her and asked. Her sister was the one who replied.
"Yes, she would love to," her sister said.
She couldn't have been more shocked.
"Nice," he replied. "I'll pick you up at eight tomorrow."
He was tall and cute, and he had asked her out. Every kid in the neighborhood and school was terrified of her ever since she had broken a student's neck in third grade.
It was her first date, and she didn't know what to do. She had tried on up to 30 different outfits earlier, before finally settling on the dark blue gown she was wearing. She had styled her hair partly into curls. She wasn't a fan of makeup, so she settled for lip gloss. She was about to put on her shoes when she heard the doorbell ring.
Her heart raced. She could see it already, tearing her apart. She had never felt this way before. She didn't know how to handle it.
There was a slight knock on her door
"He's here, damn I never knew he was this cute would have taken him for myself. Anyways get your big baby ass downstairs before I gut you with a kitchen knife". Her sister said.
At least that made her smile a bit, she was about to give a snotty remark but stopped herself midway.
"Don't worry lil sis, for once in your life go have fun forget shape shifters, forget monsters. Just be you, taste life outside our family tonight" her sis said pulling her up.
"A night to myself" she thought.
It was against all her instincts but she wanted this for once in her life she wanted something outside of hunting shape shifters, something outside the walls she put round herself.
She had never really felt fear before, at least not like this. Now, for the first time, she knew what it meant to be terrified. Her heart racing like it had been hit by a lighten bolt.
She took a deep breath and walked out of her room, walking slowly down the stairs.
And there he was charming has ever standing by the door.
"I want this" she said to herself
"I want this"...
