Chapter 36 - Mr. Alex

Mr. Alex:
Little is known of his upbringing, or even the later years of his adolescence. Only information that is known about him is after he has become a city official. He started the service at the age of 18 from the ground up. As a junior officer rising through the ranks and becoming the chief of police. Not an easy career he has had, facing hardships from the senior officials from the get go. Staying without getting corrupt was a hard process. Although he had to swallow his pride and take money in order to remain under the radar. Irking the wrath of many officers when he did not accept money. Suspension, demotion he has seen it all. One day when he was at his lowest he received a letter.
A letter from the kingdom.
A letter asking him to meet the king himself.
Alex disregards the letter thinking it is meant for someone else, or rather a mistake of sorts were made. Why would a king ask for a meeting with a low ranking officer?
Work carried on as usual trying to fight crime with as much just as he could.
A few months had passed since the letter arrived. Then again one morning another letter arrives at his doorstep.
Again requesting him to meet the King. That it was urgent and required his immediate presence. Alex sat down with the letter in his room. This time taking it more seriously. Going through the letter again and again.
By late afternoon he was smoking his pipe and in serious consideration of going to the kingdom.
It was not to be as an urgent call from the station required him to look into a serious criminal activity.
Alex puts the letter down keeping the pipe next to the letter. With the pipes smoke still not out completely. He shuts his door and leaves to the station.
A Police officer had been gunned down near the Corporate main building of District 2. Crime was rampant in those days. The new entrants to the districts went unchecked without any identification. Their criminal records went unnoticed.
Early on a mistake had been made. The corporations thought that the criminals were all hung or spent their lives in prison. That was not the case. A lot of them were left free from prison after a couple of years and so on. And the criminals streak continued in the districts. Many police officers and innocent civilians were hurt or dead because of this error. The error was slowly rectified in the coming time.
Alex reaches the crime sign were a mid ranking officer was shot dead by a criminal. The partner is deeply wounded and an ambulance seems to be on the way. The wounded officer is inspected by Alex and he comes to a conclusion that he is not in going to die.
Alex starts taking notes of the crime scene as they wait for the ambulance. As per protocol he follows all the standards. Meanwhile back up appears as a officer is shot dead. The arrival of the backup causes the bystanders to disperse. Alex completes his duty and heads back to his home.
He opens his door, the pipe still lay on the desk . However the notes was reduced to dust from the smoke of the pipe. Alex looks at the black ashes in utter dismay. He clears out the ashes to the bin. Cleans his pipe and puts in the drawer.
A few weeks pass by and Alex is busy fighting the rampant crime that has suddenly gone up a notch in the district. One fine day while fighting of a group of criminals he is inflicted by a wound from a bullet. At once he is admitted to the hospital. Laying unconscious on the hospital bed from all the loss of blood.
The next day when he gets up and is greeted by a complete stranger in the hospital room. Alex immediately notices the royal cloak worn by the person .
The man says to Alex "Fate has it that you never see the gates of the kingdom," Alex looks at him completely stunned.
The man smirks and then he proceeds to keep a letter with a royal stamp on the desk right next to Alex. The man walks away as Alex takes the letter in his hands.
He opens it.

It read as follows:
"You are requested by the king to move to district 8 and record the movements of a women in her late twenties and her two sons. You are also to move them out of harms way. You are to do this for a period of 20 years. Once that period is over you will be reinstated as a police official. Depending on your performance your role will be given. All arrangements have been made for."
Yours Sincerely,
The Royal Kingdom

Alex closes the letter and puts it back on his desk.
Closes his eyes and lays back on his bed.
