Everyone was silent. After a second, murmurs broke out among the crowd of people. Fits of disbelief and subsequent anger passed through the crowd as they continued to discuss.
"There is no way she can be the one."
"She'll just ruin our already damaged reputation at Central."
"Do they even allow girls wrangle at Central?"
The fits increased, circling through the air. Maya felt their voices press a weight against her head. Her vision wavered, tiredness from the past few days weighing down on her. The shrill sound of the voices paced around her brain in large bellows.
"Are you alright?" the energy in her body dispersed. Her vision continued to flicker. Her body wobbled as the disagreement increased. She faintly nodded, reaching up to the trinket hanging around her neck. The cool metal flooded her with relief. A melodious voice sang to her at the shady background of her mind. All sounds around her disappeared into a light buzz. She felt the familiar evening breeze from the memory.
Spams of images crawled past her vision. Warmth meandered through her body. Her stiff bones relaxed. Her blood regained its sense of normalcy. The feeling of a hand shaking her zapped her back to reality. Her eyes snapped open. The hot glaring sun watched her in a sinister manner. A blurry figure came to view, shrouding the suns hefty rays. Her eyes blinked a couple of times. The jagged lines of vision crisscrossed one another. The voice said something, but she was unable to decipher them.
Suddenly, a warm liquid hit her face. She jerked up, breathing heavily. Her hair stuck to her face. Blood mixed with water and sweat before soaking itself into her tunic. The sound of arguments filled her ears once again.
"Are you okay?" A man asked, watching her through concerned brown eyes. Her head suddenly seared with pain. She fought through the pain and cracked a smile.
"I'm perfectly fine. Just peachy." He rolled his eyes. The crowd continued to rumble with complaints. He stood up, his tall frame hovering over her much smaller one. The rays of sunlight no longer toyed with her eyes. He grabbed her hand. His strong hands bit gently into the flowing sleeves of the undershirt of the tunic. She bit back a slight groan as she rose on her two feet. She wobbled slightly before steadying herself.
"Ajax! Maya!' a familiar female voice screamed. Their heads swiveled to the left and watched as a petite woman with starkly contrasting eyes waded to them. One eye had a lush green tone of the wild forests while the other was a light blue that sparkled like the background of the afternoon sun. She stopped, on seeing Maya she cringed.
"That must've hurt." Maya merely sighed. She stopped before them and grabbed Maya's face with enough force to break her neck. Her short stubby hands groped her face lightly. Maya winced as the woman's hand caressed new bruises and gashes.
"You're not helping at all you know." She immediately released her face with an apologetic look. She turned to the taller man sharply.
"And where are those self righteous healers in all of this?" she narrowed her eyes.
"They're busy taking care of Gunth- "
"And you allowed them to just leave without checking up on Maya!" She exploded. Sweat trickled down the taller man's face as his intimidating persona morphed into one of a scared child. Amidst her pain, Maya managed to chuckle lowly.
"Alia, Gunther was unco-"
"So what if hes unconscious! I thought men were the stronger sex, cant he climb through the pain? Arent his lot too strong to be handled. How many times will I tell you to direct those pesky healers to check on Maya first?" The woman said, a fierce expression on her face. Despite the fact she only reached a little above his waist line, she still continued to intimidate him. Maya couldn't help but guffaw, constantly wheezing from both the pain and the spectacle.
"You're lucky I'm in a good mood today or else you'd have been lieing beside Gunther unconscious also." As if now noticing, the crowd that still lingered, talking as they watched Maya in disgust, her frown deepened.
"Let me guess, their unhappy that their worthy representative stood no chance against Maya." The man hummed while Maya suddenly felt the headache press down on her skull, the sensation of needles boring down her skin crashed down on her. They both noticed her disgruntled state and wrapped a hand around her.
"Its so annoying how judgemental these people are." She said, anger clouding through her tone. Her contrasting eyes both darkened.
Soon Maya's mind tapered, her vision faltering. Her vision flickered within mere seconds, the unpleasant and loud voices adding to the robust county of headaches. Her feet dragged through the sand in light brushes. Waves of heat overflowed in her. Her face seemed to age as it turned ashen. Her body began to lag. The weight of today and so many other days before seemed to fall in on her hollow shell.
She felt herself slip, her muscles barely stretching. Her body seemed lifeless to the hurtling demands of her brain. The warmth within her slowly drained down. Soon warm hands encircled her waist in a light circle. With the little energy she had, her brunt yet sickly hand clasped the one treasure that she held most dear. The golden trinket around her neck. A little peace crawled down her well being. A flicker of its kind before she was lulled to a slumber plagued by lost memories.
I want to thank God for giving me the Grace to write this. So, how are Ajax and Alia? The chapter felt kind of boring but, more to come. Since I have a lot of free time, I was wondering, do you have any books to recommend?
