Chapter 8 - A promise to a new memory

As Maki's drone scouted the deserted city, we carefully marked our path on a map, noting the locations of zombies and blocked roads. I asked Maki about her hometown, but she sadly revealed that she never had one. Her family moved around every day, following the government's orders, leaving her with no friends and no time to play.

I made a silent promise to myself to create new memories for her and spoil her with experiences she would never forget. As we set out to leave the city, I smiled at Maki, determined to make the most of our time together.

We encountered some zombies, but I dispatched them easily with my katana. Maki's weapon of choice was a silenced pistol, so we could avoid attracting unwanted attention. Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, shattering the eerie silence.

Maki immediately used her drone to scout the area, while I carry her and hid from the approaching horde of zombies. She reported that it was a group of soldiers fighting the zombies, but they were heavily outnumbered and wouldn't last long.

I hesitated about whether to help them. If I used my android to save them, it would draw attention to me, and I would risk being targeted. But deep down, I knew I couldn't stand by and watch them die.

"Maki, I'm going to do something crazy. Just go along with it, okay?" I said.

She looked at me quizzically but nodded in agreement.

As I approached the soldiers riding the android's back he jump to the nearest building, we saw that their platoon was surrounded by zombies. The sergeant yelled out orders, telling his men to run for their lives and leaving himself to hold back the horde with a machine gun.

I watched in awe as the sergeant sacrificed himself for his comrades, Using my system I brought thousands of grenades and summoned them at the zombies to give them a chance to escape. The explosion cleared the path, and the soldiers made it to safety.

The next thing we knew, the area we had just left was filled with zombies, and we realized that they had all been drawn to the sound of the explosion.

We couldn't believe our eyes when the soldiers miraculously emerged unscathed from the chaos. They were baffled by their sudden salvation, but their admiration for the sergeant grew even stronger.

As we walked away, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had done the right thing. Maybe risking my life for others wasn't so crazy after all.

The mystery of their rescue remained unsolved for a year, until one day, the truth was revealed. But that is a story for another time.
