Chapter 24 - Episode 23

It was 3 am that morning, when Abiola woke up, with a fright. He had had a strange dream, in his dream he saw Cyril calling out to him for help. Even after all that has happened Cyril was his best friend. He saw Cyril being chased by a masked figure, he was scared. He tried to stretch his hand towards his friend and help him out but no matter what he did his hand couldn't reach further to where Cyril was and no matter how Cyril ran towards him, he couldn't still reach where Abiola was standing.

Abiola woke up and sat on the edge of his bed, he was confused and worried about what had happened to his friend. He reminisced on what had happened the past 4 weeks. He had been invalid and unable to move nor speak, immediately he noticed something - he was sitting on his bed and had woken up without any help from anyone. He placed his feet on the ground and stood up, he was surprised at what he saw. His legs were looking strong, his bones were not aching.

He ran towards a mirror that hung on the wall, he looked and saw - his face was not twisted and crumpled up like it was - he was whole once again. He ran out of his room and went to his father's room.

His dad was shocked and elated, his boy had been healed.

"All Rise!" Shouted the policeman.

Everyone in the courtroom stood on their feet as the presiding judge took his sit at the bench. He picked up a paper on his desk - it was the layout of the case.

The court registrar called the case, the judge in turn called the prosecutors bench.

The prosecutor introduced himself and addressed the jury.

The defence bench was also called and Alice's lawyer stood up, introduced himself and addressed the jury.

First the prosecutor bench started the prosecution by calling his witnesses.

His first witness was one of Alice's neighbour - Mr Kola. He was sworn into the witness box.

"Mr Kola, do you know Alice Okunsayan?." The prosecutor asked.

"Yes, she is my neighbour." The man replied.

"Have you ever seen this man in her house?"

He showed the man a picture of Abiola.

"Yes I saw him a couple of times in her house." The man answered.

" I thought he was her family member or someone close to her."

"Thank you" the prosecutor said and headed to his sit.

Alice's lawyer got up to cross examine Mr. Kola.

"Mr Kola, when you saw Mr. Abiola did he look like someone who had been kidnapped."

"Well I cannot say for sure but I know for his illness he was supposed to be in a hospital not in Alice's room."

"So you can't say for sure that he was kidnapped?" Alice's lawyer asked.

"No... I can't but I mean."

Alice's lawyer sat back down, other witnesses were called, on and on it went and then it was time for the defence to call their witness and they called the detective on the case.

He was sworn into the witness box and promised to say the truth and nothing more or less than the truth.

Alice's lawyer approached him and started his cross examination.

"Counsellor Michael, you were the detective on the missing case. What do you make of the case?"

"Well when I was given the case, the report said a lady called Veronica Olumide had been missing for several days. Myself and my team..... we searched for days and later found her body. We found out that the night she went missing, she had gone out with her boyfriend - Cyril Adebola. Our later investigations led us to know that Cyril Adebola was actually Alice's cousin. We traced her and found Mr Abiola in her apartment. Mr. Abiola had also been reported missing by his father."

"So Detective, did your investigations reveal that Alice was directly involved in the kidnapping of Mr. Abiola or as an accomplice?" Asked the defence lawyer.

"Our investigations did not reveal that Alice was directly involved in the kidnapping but she was found to be an accomplice because she had kept him in her home without alerting the police."

The defence lawyer asked again.

"Detective you have been on the force for many years. Do you believe - based on your experience that Alice is an accomplice in this case?"

"In my experience, accomplices in a kidnapping do not treat their victims as well as Alice treated Mr. Abiola. Our investigations revealed that she had taken him to the hospital for his regular medical checkups and had also acquired a wheelchair from the same hospital for him."

"So detective what you are saying is that you do not think that Miss Alice Okunsayan is an accomplice in this kidnapping case."

"No I don't." The detective replied.

Alice's lawyer thanked the court and sat back down on his side of the bench and then the prosecutor took over the cross examination.

"Detective, tell the court. Did your investigations lead you to Miss Alice's home?"

"Yes it did."

"So based on evidences gotten from your investigations, is Miss Alice an accomplice or not?"

"Based on investigations and all the leads we had that led to Miss Alice. Our investigations shows that Miss Alice is an accomplice."

He thanked the court and sat back down on his side of the bench.

The judge turned to the jury and asked if they had made their decision.

The jury announced that they had come to a conclusion on the case.

One of the members of the jury stood up to read the decision the jury had collectively taken.

"We the jury after deliberating on this case, find Alice Okunsayan....."

Immediately someone badged into the courtroom and shouted stop! He walked towards the judge's bench and introduced himself to the court.

"Your honour I am sorry for badging into the court room in such a manner. My name is Abiola Alesinloye, I am the one who was kidnapped and I have something to say.
