Akpara Ekpe's shrine has been known to be not just a sanctum for the gods, but also a place were people from far and near found countermeasures to their predicaments.
A woman who had been barren for nine long years was said to have been able to breed after visiting Akpara Ekpe's shrine.
Many great feats has been noted to have happened anytime a visit was made to the great Akpara Ekpe.
One incidence that brought great acclaim to Akpara Ekpe was when he confronted and subdued spirits from the evil forest.
'A great plague swept across the village of Ekpene-Obo, many people died from the disease and no one knew the cause. The elders of the land had to go inquire from Akpara Ekpe. At the shrine Akpara Ekpe consulted the gods and announced to the elders that the epidemic was caused by spirits of people who died but the proper ritual had not been done to bind their spirits to the evil forest. They were responsible for the plague that swept through the village.
Akpara Ekpe had asked the elders to bring the necessary ritual items and he would go forth and confront the spirits.
The elders brought the items to Akpara Ekpe as they were told to. Akpara Ekpe and his assistant woke up at dawn and headed for the evil forest. At the evil forest he placed the items on the ground, he smeared blood from a fowl he had killed in sacrifice to the gods upon the items as he chanted in an unknown language. No one could tell what happened between Akpara Ekpe and the spirits but it is said that he and his assistant spent seven days and seven nights in the evil forest and when they finally came out they announced that the spirit will bother the village no longer.'
{At the shrine}
After much contemplation Abiola decided not to join Cyril and the others on their expedition, he had never been in a shrine before. He was scared but he couldn't speak, the darkness intensified the fright but it was too late to turn back now.
"I do not know the way back to the shack" he said to himself.
"I will have to wait for them outside the shrine, when they are done with whatever they are going to do, they'll meet me at the entrance. "
Deep in his thoughts he could hear the voice of the man thundering.
"Who dares retreat before the great Akpara Ekpe."
"He is a friend of mine, but he will not be joining us." Cyril responded
"Fine, remain here and do not speak." The man said to Abiola
They entered into the the shrine, it was a big hall but there was no roof. The walls were probably made by piling blocks made from red earth or had been framed with bamboo sticks and then red earth were used to plaster the frame concealing it.
The floor had a skull drawing made with white chalk and charcoal. It glowed from the reflection of the torches that stood round about.
As they entered, the man they had met with outside gestured that they stand in the midst of the skull drawing.
He stood before them with his back towards the party and spoke with a loud voice.
"The great Akpara Ekpe, Akpara Ekpe the great lion, the devourer of men, the binder of spirits. There are pilgrims here who have come for an encounter."
As he continued with praise, Akpara Ekpe emerged from the shadows. It was as if he had walked in through the wall. He walked to where they were and sat right in front of them.
He gestured for them to sit on the ground and they did. Cyril was scared out of his wits but he held on.
Akpara Ekpe stared deeply into their eyes and asked them what they wanted him to do for them.
It was Nonso who spoke first.
"The great Akpara Ekpe, your children have come with graveness of hearts. We all have one similar plight; we want to know why poverty has ravaged our families and left us in so much dread of ever becoming greater than we are presently."
Akpara Ekpe listened carefully as each one of them spoke, when they were done with the analysis of their lives, he said.
"My sons, a dialogue with fate isn't really in my purview, but, I can change the biorhythm of your life if you want."
"Please can you explain more, I don't really understand." Cyril said.
"I mean to say, that I have in my power, to turn the tide of your lives around.
From lack to plenty.
From sick to health.
Vice versa.
You only need to pay a small price."
"We are ready to do whatever it takes." Nonso replied.
Akpara Ekpe smiled and turned around, he gestured to his assistant and he brought to him a bowl of water. He began to chant in an unknown language, after about five minutes of chanting he turned around towards the group and said.
"Let the wheel turn the tide as the tide the wheel, the price of destiny is destiny.
All the pain only one should feel, flowing from one to another."
