“I can’t do it,” Eva said again, shaking her head.
I could understand her fear. But it still had to be done. This was about far more than just me and Erik. This was everyone. And we had a duty to say something, even if we were never going to be believed.
“Yes, you can,” I told her firmly. “And I’ll be there with you to help you.”
I saw the hesitation on her face linger a little longer still. But she didn’t pull away from me entirely. I gave her the time she needed to understand the severity of everything that was going on. I knew that I wouldn’t have to say anything more to her. She was clever, and she had put everything together all on her own. She would see the importance of this.
My faith in her was not misplaced.
“All right,” she said, nodding as she steeled herself. “How are we going to do this?”
