I had no idea when I’d ended up crawling into bed that night, but I awoke to a gentle knock on my bedroom door and Helen poking her head in.
“Lady Vanessa? Breakfast is almost ready downstairs.”
I sighed into my pillow, my body sore from sitting on the floor all night crying. I rolled over and rubbed at my eyes, feeling how tired they were from what little sleep I’d gotten last night.
“My Lady?”
“I’m up, I’m up…” I mumbled and wrestled my sheets off of me to sit up straight.
“I can come back, my Lady…”
Blinking the sleep from my eyes, I sleepily replied, “It’s fine.”
I brushed back my long hair from my face, knowing that it was probably a rat’s nest considering I didn’t bother to braid it before I fell asleep.
I rose up out of my bed and padded over to the vanity and flopped down onto it. I looked at myself in the mirror, seeing Helen head over to me out of my peripheral. I looked as much of a mess as I felt.
