Confusion lasted for a moment, until he heard a coughing sound from behind, and turned to find Mae almost lifeless, blood draining swiftly out the side of her mouth. Lazarus panics as he turns toward her, the broken chain slips from his hand, and falls through a crack in the rotten wooden floor. There's no time left. He props the upper half of her body up against the bedframe and rushes to the bathroom. As the sun slips from view and darkness quickly rises he grabs what feels like a small rectangular box and rushes back to Mae's side. There's not much that can be done with the little time he has left and she's practically lifeless.
Lazarus does the unthinkable and begins to tear strips of her clothing away before stumbling upon what looks to be a large slash through her mid torso. She was bleeding heavily before but now only trickles slip through the four claw shaped incisions. He takes a shallow breath as the smell drifts toward him, her sweet scent along with something else, something sour and rotten. A puzzled look crosses his features until realization hits him; the creature wasn't a bloodhound but another cursed human.
Darkness swiftly engulfs the two and he has no choice but to stop for the night. He's exhausted and overwhelmed. Part of Lazarus wishes things could go back to the way they had been before but he knows there's no turning back. He's been around long enough to know, once humans start rebelling there will be no expense made to try and keep them chained. He glances wearly at an almost lifeless Mae, and runs his hand along the side of her face, tears start pooling in his eyes as he tries in vain to push the pain away. It's been a long time since someone touched his heart the way she has; he had forgotten he had one. Now as Lazarus sits next to Mae, he can't stand the thought of having to face Celest without her.
