Chapter 1 - Chapter One: Tales of Rememberance (Prologue)

Huygens has always been a planet rite with strife. From the wars of a time long forgot to the cries of the sick there is rarely a time to rebuild, and yet people still live. They try time and time again to make their homes better, their countries more prosperous and moral. What those means to each person will differ, but they never give up hope.

That was until recently.

Libertatia, Vergus, and Fictia are the major three countries of Huygens. Together, they have ruled over the world. The only reason that civilization never fully collapsed was due to their influence, but lately both their people and their rulers have been slipping.

Libertatia is a country built to be a utopia that toppled itself so often that no one even remembers what it was supposed to be anymore. Only five years ago it was Sequitous, and before that it was Truios, yet everyone had now moved on. A people of faith they are. They fight hard to keep their wills strong during the Alligatoridae outbreak of 2168 as they worshiped their one and only god "Sectios" to prevent death. It did not work, but that only made them want to try harder. They built larger and more grand displays of love for their god. They tried moved completely to automation in industry to allow for more time for prayer, and yet it was Vergus who saved them.

The founding of Vergus was bloody and unnecessary. Built off the back of the recent plagues of its time they gathered support for a revolution. The mantra of, "To be together is to be forgotten, to fight is to be free and to be free is to be born!" swept the nation into a frenzy. The old government fell, and a new system was implemented, one where the markets would decide the fate of the world. It worked, the Alligatoridae virus was defeated, but they forced each and every person to submit to the whim of the markets and yet never guaranteed someone their place in it. Nowadays it is a land full of repeated invention, forced labor, and never-ending debt. For those at the top it is wonderful, but for everyone else, the majority of people, it is hell.

However, Vergus is good for one thing and one thing alone: the innovation of Amplifiers. They allow people to intake their natural energy and power everything from the smallest handgun to entire limbs, or even a plane. It all depends on one thing: luck. Luck to be born into a household rich enough to get safe Amplifiers and luck to have enough natural energy that it would be useful. For some it was a pipe dream, but for others it saved their lives. People could work longer, harder, faster. People could fight others far physically stronger than them and win. Humans can once again beat machines in war and so countries, such as Libertatia, that had moved to eradicate the need for human warriors had to submit to Vergus.

Fictia is, similarly to Libertatia, is under the thumb of Vergus, but for entirely different reasons. Fictia is a poor country, and is in massive debt to Vergus. Its people are reliant on Amplifiers since their major industry is mining. They require the massive amounts of progress in order to meet Vergus's quotas, but the cost has been great. No longer are farms getting subsidies, so the people are starving. Due to this, Fictia paired up with Vergus to expand the Vergus military. As long as you are in the military you are guaranteed to be fed, clothed, and generally taken care of. The only cost is a small bit of your humanity and morality.

As of late people have become more focused on preforming the role what is told to them. If you are a Saint of Sectios, then you must enforce your god onto the people around you. If you are a business owner of Vergus, then you must take advantage of those working under you for higher profit. If you are a vagrant of Fictia then you must be idiotic and lazy. Previously people fought against these ideas, these assertions, but now they are tired. Not everyone of course. There will always be those who work to change the status quo.

One of these people is most certainly not Rathmir. Hailing from Fictia, Rathmir was accustomed to the low quality of life in the area. Her family wasn't well off, nor where they particularly bright. Due to this, Rathmir spent most of her early years like any other Fictia citizen: cold, hungry, and alone. This is why she jumped at the chance to join the combined military of Fictia and Vergus, or at least that is how she justifies it to those around her.

It matters not now, because regardless of her original intent it is now kill or be killed. To train, to improve, those are the only things that matter now.
