Chapter 14 - The fall of hope

Edwin Jenner, in a panic pulled Airon and ran in the direction he came from, without properly explaining what was going on.

"Candace and the other researchers left at the center are hiding in the cold storage. When I was running away I seemed to have seen many people infected with the virus in front of the door at that time. Quickly, let's go save them!"

"Wait! You have nothing to worry about, everyone is safe right now."

Edwin Jenner was completely relieved now to hear Airon's words and together with Jon they all walked towards the cold room.

On the way, Airon picked up the radio and communicated with the others, they still had to get the people that were left outside before anything else happened.

When they arrived at the cold storage, Candace was the first to see Edwin approaching and rushed to hug him. The others also looked at the two with a smile and came over to hug him one by one after the two were separated.

Seeing that everyone had finished greeting each other, Auron asked Edwin directly. "Okay, tell me what happened here, didn't I tell them not to open the door when we weren't here?"

"Their safety is very important, they can't take that risk if there isn't someone capable of maintaining security inside the facility." Jon Seda added with a serious expression.

Edwin smiled wryly, weren't his efforts enough to prove that he could keep this place safe?

The scene of the infected eating other people left a throbbing fear inside everyone, who saw death flash past their eyes in seconds, they definitely wouldn't take a risk like that again.

"It has nothing to do with Edwin, I was the one who opened the door." Candace picked up the pace of the conversation and expressed an apology to them all.

"I'm so sorry, if it wasn't my fault, what happened now wouldn't have happened and jeopardized our entire future."

"No, no, you made the decision we all agreed on. No one would have thought such a thing would happen."

After listening to Martha's explanation, Airon realized that a group of people had arrived at the CDC to ask for help just when some soldiers were facing some walkers, everyone present hesitated for some time, and finally it was Candace who decided to let them in.

What was not expected was that all those people came into conflict long after they opened the door and not everyone went straight into the center.

The conflict seemed to be that there were different opinions within this group of people, and some people wanted to occupy this place, while the other group did not want to do anything.

The two waves of people began to attack each other. Those who wanted to occupy this place were blocked outside and attacked by zombies.

Edwin and the others closed the front door, but many of the people who entered the center had already been killed, and some others were severely wounded by the area where they were husbanded, and the few unharmed people were also infected soon after.

Later, it was discovered that many of the other parties on the outside had not moved. When they went to check, the corpses that were infected turned into walkers and chased them. In panic, they were all chased into the cold storage.

The rest Airon had already speculated, so he didn't pay much attention to it. The walkers outside were many of those who remained outside.

"People can be dangerous." .

The whole group of people lamented what had happened and arrived at the main hall, just as they were about to start cleaning the place, there was a noise outside.

"Ta da ta da!"

A group of people immediately looked out the window, only to see a squadron of helicopters flying not far in the sky, and a heavily armed force slowly approaching down the road further away.

"What are these troops for?"

These investigators stood by the window and looked out warily.

"Looks like the soldiers outside were just a reconnaissance squad, looks like the main force has arrived now." Airon thought to himself.

As he looked outside, he figured out what would happen next. I knew very well that these troops were going to establish a temporary base outside the CDC to receive some survivors who were evacuating and keep the place safe.

As for the follow-up, there should have been a relevant transfer plan, but this temporary camp was eventually destroyed by a large number of walkers.

Airon had been confused when he looked at all the corpses and some bodies of soldiers outside the CDC, he thought at first that the soldiers should have arrived earlier, but he never imagined that soon after he arrived at the CDC so did the soldiers.

Thinking ahead, Airon did not get too complicated and now what he had to do was to check the whole place well to maintain security inside the center.

Not long after, Tyler along with a nurse returned to the lab, pushing an emergency bed at the same time, and Rick was lying on the bed.

The others also brought in the bodies that would serve as experimental subjects, these subjects were tightly secured and moved into the lab.

Arranging a room, the nurse changed Rick's medicine and left the room.

The Jenners walked toward them and Airon explained without waiting for the other party to ask.

"This is a friend of mine. He was shot and that was about half a month when he was in a shooting with crimes. He is currently in a coma and by the nurse's words he has no symptoms. I will take care of him, there is nothing to worry about."

The Janner's looked at each other, they didn't have much to say, they themselves had put the center in danger a moment ago, so they could only voice their thoughts.

"Well, now that the CDC rules and regulations are useless, I guess it's a good time for your friend, but he needs a blood test..."

"No problem, you can have it done as soon as possible."

...

"Alright everyone, let's rest early today, you guys are tired too, go take a hot bath, rest and let's continue with the investigations tomorrow."

After saying that, Candece shooed away all the staff that had been working on the cleanup.

Airon in all this time had been checking every nook and cranny of the CDC along with his group looking for stray walkers. He could not sleep without going through every corner of the place at least three times.

Although several people were very tired at this point, they were still busy with the job at hand, so they were a little reluctant to leave. Many were still in front of a microscope and looked like they had no intention of resting at all.

"Alright for today, listen to Candece and get some rest, this day was full of strong emotions." Airon said with a slight smile seeing that everyone was trying so hard to look for new clues in this zombie virus.

When he arrived at this place and toured it, he saw that the research room was transferred from the upstairs to the basement, and the electricity was cut off on the upper floors leaving only the downstairs areas with power.

Rick was also transferred by Airon to a staff room on the lower floors.

So far, almost all of Airon's arrangements in the initial stage of this world have been arranged, and the next step is to wait for Rick to wake up.

Airon left Rick's room and walked towards the stairwell. At the stairwell door, he met the Jenners. The three of them came to the second floor window, looking out at Atlanta in the distance with a little light shining through the city buildings.

The first to speak was Candace, she looked out the window and murmured, "Is this the end of the world?"

Edwin slipped his arm around his wife's shoulders and walked with her in silence.

Airon didn't think much and said, "I don't care if this is the end of the world, if it is, we will bring hope to this world and as long as we are still alive, we can recover."

Suddenly, clusters of huge flames erupted one after another in the distant city of Atlanta, instantly lighting up the originally dark sky.

Buildings in the distance became illusory against the backdrop of the flames and were gradually engulfed by the explosions. More clusters of explosions were heard, and the entire city soon became a sea of flames.

"Are they leaving the remaining survivors? They're sick..."

Edwin's hand around Candece began to unconsciously exert force, sensing the uneasiness in her husband's heart, Candece also reached out and took her husband's hand.

Airon was quiet and said something lightly. "We can't change the world, but we can change ourselves."

At that moment, the radio in his chest began to make sounds. "Zzz... Airon, can you hear me? It's Shane, did you see, the city of Atlanta is finished! Now, we can't go to a shelter in Atlanta."
