Chapter 29 - Chapter 29

We spent most of the day idling around the camp, well Beagle and Vito did that, since I, thanks to a drunken ex-deputy got myself burring by all of the weapons the outpost had in their armory. It was definitely a wrong choice to tell him that I was quite a good mechanic and because of that Beagle thought that it would be a fantastic idea to use my knowledge as a way of getting himself in the pants of one of the women that were off duty. One thing led to another and just as I was resting outside, Jackson came to bother me. The ranger learned from that trooper that I was probably one of the few people in the whole Mojave that could repair a gun without breaking it, so like any good soldier, he "persuaded" me to help the outpost for a pretty penny.

After what seemed an eternity, I finally got the chance to rest, and while I was dead tired to do anything for the day, I was happy. Despite having to work for almost the rest of the day, the number of caps Major Knight and Jackson gave me was more than I would have ever thought I would get for fixing some guns. When I was done with the guns and informed the Major about it, he gave me 250 caps as well as some decent combat boots.

The next day, after I ate some breakfast with my companions, Jackson called for us, seemly something important must have happened for the man to send a trooper after us, the first thing in the morning. As soon as we reached his office, the man stood up before signaling us to follow him toward the major office.

"Glad to see that you guys didn't refuse."

"About that, Jackson here told us that it's an order that we are not allowed to leave the facility until we accept."

The man in question looked hurt as soon as he heard Vito's words, but a few seconds later, he shook his head, realizing that he almost was played by a super mutant.

"As I was saying, I'm glad that you three didn't leave the outpost yet. Last night, Major Joy found some remnants of the brotherhood of steel a few kilometers north of the outpost. Apparently, those people are using the building that has a satellite dish near it as a base of some sort. And despite being a Major myself, Major Joy outranks my thanks to her experience, and because of that she asked for your help taking out those remnants."

Even though I was the "leader" of our little band of mercenaries, I turned towards Vito and Beagle, hoping that the two of them would have something to say about this. At the same time, the Major and the ranger walked a few meters away from us, giving us some privacy to discuss. Just as I was about to ask them about this mission, Vito interrupted me.

"I know what you want to ask us, Dante. I'm more than sure that this woman and her team could take out that brotherhood squad quite easily, however, she asked for us, well, she asked for you to help her, I wonder why?"

"Even though I'm the newest member of the group, I'm going with what Vito just said. Since I've decided to follow you guys, I'm all in for any decision you make."

Hearing both of their response made me even more confused and indecisive than before, but after a few seconds, I decided that we might as well get something from this, even more so since we don't exactly have anything to do right now.

Five minutes later, Major Knight came back this time alone. As soon as he sits in his chair, he looks at me before smiling.

"Are you guys willing to help the NCR with this problem? Of course, you all will be paid for your troubles. Also, before I forget, Major Joy told me that the pay would be 100 caps per person. "

"She will be the one who will pay us?"

"C'mon Dante, you already made me bleed money yesterday, though I have to admit it was worth it. Everyone, even Ghost praised you for your work and that says a lot."

Don't do that man. Being praised for my good work, as well as having been paid quite nicely for my job made this decision hard. On one hand, I'd rather not stay anywhere near that strange woman, yet on the other hand, the caps, as well as the loot we could get from these guys, was something only a fool would refuse.

"We are doing it, sir."

"Splendid! Major Joy would be overjoyed."

"So…what do you think are we doing here exactly? Other than a lot of nothing."

"Our leader must have got some mission from our chapter, right?"

"Of course, he has a mission, you idiot! I meant why would our chapter send a single knight with ten initiates and a scribe here in the middle of nowhere?"

"Can you guys be any more lauder than you are right now? The NCR would hear you before we would even see them for god's sake. The sooner we can contact the main chapter, the sooner our people could leave this forsaken place."

"Uh, Knight Liam? We don't exactly have the proper equipment to repair the station…"

"I swear to… forget it, just do whatever you can to make this …"

This was all the Knight could say before a shot hit him on the side of his knee, disabling a servo and causing his stance to be lopsided. "Fuck! Take cover!"

The initiates quickly run for some cover when another shot rings out and a round strikes the knee servo on the other leg of the Knight, causing the man to lose balance before falling straight on his face. Practically making the most dangerous foe a practice target.

"Leave me be! Fire at the…"

Once the knight was killed, the initiates tried to dash out of where they hiding but were cut down before they could even move. Some of the ones that had some past experience fighting against enemies tried fighting back, shooting in the direction they thought the shots were coming from, before their heads exploded into gory bits, while others were shot in their chests and fell down to the ground. The initiates were picked off one by one as the shots rang out, not having a chance to do anything. Suddenly, everything went silent.

Only two initiates and the scribe were left alive. Their scribe was lying in a puddle of the knight's blood on the floor behind the power armor, while the initiates were currently ducking behind the satellite hull that they were supposed to repair. All three of them refuse to move from their cover for even a second, not even if that might have been their only chance to survive. A few minutes went by, when the trio heard footsteps in the distance, steadily growing louder and closer. In a split-second decision, one of the initiates decided to try his luck and run out of cover to run away but before he could even run for a meter, he was gunned down. The other initiate tried to reach the scribe only for him to shoot himself in the leg with his shotgun. Seeing his companions dead or in the case of the last initiate, wounded, the man clutched his laser pistol and start hyperventilating, listening to the footsteps that were getting even louder. His eyes were darting everywhere, trying to find salvation. Suddenly, the footsteps stopped right before they reached the roof. The scribe shut his eyes accepting his fate, but after a few seconds, he yelled out before charging forward. Sadly for him, before he could even see who his enemy looked like, a giant hand grabbed his head before his world went black.

Once the scribe was knocked out, Vito turned to face his "leader" with a strange expression on his face. Dante, who lacked a better use of words, any personal space thanks to a certain woman that was way too excited for his young mind, could only roll his eyes at his friend.

"That's it?"

"That's it. We took out all of them and now the NCR can use this place to provide real-time information from Mojave to Shady Sands and vice versa."

"So major, how are we going to split the loot?"

"Huh? What do you mean, Dante? "

"The stuff that these people had on them, what we can take from them."

"Ah, about that, well I wasn't here officially so that means that everything you see here belongs to you and your group. However, I demand some compensation from you."
