Slowly, but steadily I continue to disarm the mines, and after half an hour of doing so, the bridge as well as the entrance of the town was clear of any mines or traps. Luckily enough, the "guard" that was supposed to watch the entrance was asleep and before the man could react, Vito smashed his head on the ground, giving the man a swift death, thought that might have been a mercy kill, compared to what the NCR was going to do with the convicts that surrender.
Rather than hiding the body, we decided to let him stay there on the chair, hoping that his friends would mistake the way he stays as sleeping rather than anything else. While there were quite a few buildings in this town, it wasn't exactly rocket science finding which was the hotel and which was the Vikky and Vance Casio, however neither one of us except to see another pair of guards waiting beside the door of the casino.
From what Hayes told us, the citizens of this town were inside the casino, forcing the convicts to let them hide inside of it, at least for now, but seeing the guards at the entrance, it seems that these convicts might have other plans for these people.
"How should we take them out, Vito?"
"The stupid answer would be to use our guns, but I reckon that would put all of those criminals on high alert, and to be honest with you kiddo, I'd rather not have to fight our way out of an ambush."
"Does that mean that we have to go around and come from behind?"
"Sadly it does. Now let's get to work and remember, Dante, don't hesitate, because they sure as hell won't."
Both of us went to one side of the casino hugging the wall and after a few minutes of slowly walking towards the entrance, we manage to sneak behind the two guards. Even though these two didn't seem all that armed for some guards, in the end, it didn't matter. Before either one of the guards could react, both Vito as well as I stabbed our target in the neck, before dragging the bodies to the ground, just in case they might have another lookout somewhere around the town. Despite taking the two guards out quickly, we couldn't waste any second out in the open so before we get spotted, we burst inside the casino surprising everyone, and scaring a few when they saw the bodies.
Thankfully, two old men came to our side and helped us carry the bodies to an empty room for the time being. "You two are with the NCR?"
"Not quite, they did ask us to clear the town thought."
"Ah, good luck with that, we would have loved to help, but as you can see, most of us are old people and to be fair, we would be a liability rather than an asset in a fight."
"We appreciate the help, nevertheless. So, how come you guys let the convicts rule?"
"But we didn't let them. When they first came here, we fought back, but sadly, for us, they killed five of our people. The second time they came our sheriff tried to face them, but the poor man got himself killed. We are what's left of this town and to tell you the truth, we won't hold out any longer, especially as our stock of food and water is almost exhausted."
"Lieutenant Hayes did say that the convicts were trying to starve you guys, but I didn't think they would be so…"
"So brutal with the people."
"You two are quite honest, which I find admirable. Names Johnson Nash youngsters, forgive me for the lead-lined welcome but we've been waiting for that lot to bust in here any moment..."
"Sorry about the blood, sir."
"No problem, blood can be washed, but life can be bought. So, I take it you two are going into the hotel right?"
"That's the plan, any tips? "
"Well, there's this old and rusty emergency staircase that you two can use to get inside the building unseen. Before I forget there's one of those sons of whores hiding on the track, he has a sniper rifle, though I can't remember if he ever used it at night."
"I reckon that bastard would have shot at us if he had one. Anyways thank you for the information you gave, even though it doesn't seem to be game-changing, it's definitely a better alternative than what we were about to do."
"This might be the first time in my entire life I say it to a super mutant, but I'm glad there's someone in this god-forsaken place doing some good. Now that I think about it, I don't remember asking for your names, did I?"
"Names Vito."
"Dante Castillo, a pleasure meeting you sir."
"Good luck dealing with those bastards, you two, and whatever you do, make sure you came back alive. It would be a pity to have two of the few honest people left alive die in my hometown."
We both nod at the old man before leaving the casino, sneaking behind the building where the emergency staircase was. Despite its hazardous look, the metal staircase still held itself just like a brand new one would, well with some small exceptions here and there. As soon as we reached the first floor, Vito opens a crack in the door and takes a peak, before he slowly opened the door and walked inside. I followed shortly from behind, fearing that my inexperience would somehow trigger a trap, the alarm, or even both at the same time.
Just as I was about to take cover next to the wall, I spotted something almost invisible, hanging at knee level from one side to the other of the hallway. As soon as I managed to take a closer look, I almost shouted out in shock.
"Wire trap."
"Of course, there's one, why would it be … can you disarm it with your ability?"
"I can give it a try."
"If you can't then I would do it. However, if you can, please do it yourself, you know just to gain some experience about disarming various traps and contraptions."
The trap was nothing too complicated, nothing like some hidden mechanism or something like that. No, it was one single shotgun with a wire that once it's pulled, the shotgun will fire, injuring or even killing the unfortunate victim. It didn't take me more than a minute to cut the wire right next to the trigger rendering the whole trap useless, before I picked the shotgun, after all, it would be a shame leaving such a perfect weapon to rust hidden behind some plant pot.
