Chapter 229 - Found -224

The tension hung thick in the air, a palpable force that could snap at any moment. Steve held his ground, his eyes locked on the Captain, who stood as an imposing figure of authority. The team knew that challenging Alpha-1 wasn't something to be done lightly, but Steve wasn't the kind of man to back down from what he believed was right.

Lena, sensing the brewing conflict, decided to step in before things could escalate further. She moved slightly closer to Steve, her voice calm but carrying a note of urgency. "Steve, we're all on the same side here. We want the same thing—to find out what happened and to help anyone we can. But we need to stay focused. We don't know what we're up against yet."

Bruce nodded in agreement, though his gaze flickered to the Captain, gauging his reaction. "She's right. We have to be smart about this. If we rush in without the full picture, we could end up in a situation we're not prepared for."

The Captain's visor shifted between them, taking in their words. He remained silent for a moment, the hum of his suit the only sound breaking the tension. Finally, he spoke, his voice measured. "I understand your concerns, but I'm not willing to compromise the mission's objectives. We'll proceed as planned, and if we find survivors, we'll deal with it then. But we don't divert from our primary goal."

Steve's jaw tightened, but he knew he had to choose his battles carefully. He glanced at Peggy, who gave him a subtle nod of reassurance. Reluctantly, he stepped back, signaling his agreement—for now. "Fine. But we don't ignore any signs of life. Agreed?"

The Captain's visor locked onto Steve for a long moment before he gave a curt nod. "Agreed. But we stay disciplined. No unnecessary risks."

With that cleared, they finally continued back further into the city, walking across the once-even pavement that was not being split apart as weed and grass grew up from between cracks and further split the ground.

All around them, they saw nothing but devastation, yet the clues were awfully few. They stopped every so often to examine certain things in more detail and take pictures. Mostly, they saw just the signs of battle that didn't look normal at all.

The notable ones were few and far between, but some were clearly not normal. They seemed to have been made with strange weapons. Some seemed like acid damage, while others were laser marks. Others were twisted masses of metal that seemed unnatural.

Peggy, walking alongside Steve, noted the peculiarities with a frown. "These markings... they don't look like anything I've seen before. Some of this damage—it's almost like it was caused by something... not human."

Bruce, who had been analyzing some of the damage with Lena, nodded in agreement. "Indeed, given the varied nature of these marks, it seems more than likely that this wasn't caused by mere technology."

Lena crouched down next to a section of the ground that had been melted away, examining the residue left behind. "I wish I had better tools to examine this with, this seems to be from some organism."

Steve watched Lena closely as she examined the melted section of the ground. The idea that an organism, rather than a machine, could be responsible for this level of destruction was unsettling. It added another layer of complexity to an already enigmatic situation.

"If it's biological, then that might be what the robots were designed to defeat before they went rogue." Steve said, his tone serious. "We need to be on high alert."

Peggy nodded in agreement, her eyes scanning the surrounding area with renewed vigilance. "If we're dealing with something biological, that means it could be unpredictable. We don't know how it behaves, what its weaknesses are—if it even has any. We need to be prepared for anything."

The Captain, who had been quietly observing the team, stepped forward, his tone authoritative. "If there's any chance that this organism—or whatever it is—is still active, we need to gather as much information as possible. We need to understand what we're up against before making any moves."

Steve glanced at the Captain, still feeling the underlying tension between them. "Indeed, we must be careful and move forward with everyone alert."

With those words, everyone moved once again, the three members of Alpha-1 making up the rear and rarely speaking up. They mostly observed, their advanced suits recording everything that happened, both near them and further away, thanks to the advanced cameras.

Their true mission was known only to them; as for the rest of the party, they kept on moving carefully through the ruined city; so far, it had been uneventful, though the peace couldn't last forever.

As the group pressed deeper into the city, the unease that had been lingering at the edges of their consciousness began to intensify. The silence was oppressive, the kind that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Every step they took seemed to echo through the hollowed-out remains of Denver, making them acutely aware of just how alone they were—or at least how alone they seemed to be.

The signs of battle grew more frequent as they advanced, with larger craters and more twisted wreckage littering the streets. The air itself seemed charged with a sense of foreboding, as if the city was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

Lena, who had been scanning the area with a handheld device, suddenly stopped in her tracks. "I'm picking up something," she said, her voice tinged with a mix of curiosity and concern. "There's an energy reading nearby—something unusual. It's faint, but it's there."

The Captain immediately stepped forward, his visor flashing as he scanned the area himself. "Where's it coming from?"

Lena adjusted the device, turning slowly as she tried to pinpoint the source. "It's coming from... over there." She pointed towards what looked like an old, partially collapsed government building, its facade crumbling but still standing.

Steve nodded, his resolve hardening. "Let's check it out. Stay sharp."

The team moved cautiously towards the building, their weapons at the ready. As they approached, the energy reading grew stronger, pulsing faintly in the background like a heartbeat. The entrance to the building was blocked by debris, but there was a gap large enough for them to squeeze through one by one.

Inside, the air was thick with dust and the scent of decay. The interior was just as ruined as the exterior, with fallen beams and shattered glass littering the floor. But the energy reading was stronger here, and it was clear they were getting closer to its source.

The Captain took the lead, his suit's sensors sweeping the area for any signs of danger. "Stay close. Whatever's in here, we don't want to be caught off guard."

The captain had only taken a few steps after saying that before his sensors picked up something that caused him to quickly fly back out. "Enemies detected; get ready for combat!"

As the Captain's warning rang out, the team instantly snapped into action, their training taking over. Weapons were raised, and everyone moved to take cover behind the debris that littered the floor of the ruined building. The oppressive silence that had hung over them like a shroud was shattered by the sudden, high-pitched whine of approaching machines.

Steve quickly assessed their surroundings, his shield at the ready. The narrowness of the corridor they had just entered left them little room to maneuver, and the collapsed state of the building meant their visibility was severely limited.

"Captain, what are we up against?" Steve asked, his eyes scanning the darkness ahead.

"Robots, multiple of them have already detected us from inside the building. More are likely to arrive once the fighting begins, we will make a fighting retreat back to the jet." The captain said and giving his orders.

"Everyone, fall back!" Steve commanded, his voice cutting through the growing noise of the approaching machines. "Keep it tight, cover each other's flanks. We'll move in formation and make our way back to the jet."

Peggy, Bruce, Bucky, and Lena quickly fell into a practiced rhythm, taking up defensive positions as they began to move back through the gap they had entered. The narrow corridor forced them into a single-file line, with Steve and the Captain taking up the rear, ready to fend off any machines that might breach their defenses.

The first of the robots appeared from the shadows ahead, its glowing red eyes locking onto the team. It was a sleek, menacing construct, with limbs that moved unnervingly fast. It charged forward, its metallic claws scraping against the floor with an ear-piercing screech.

Steve's shield was in his hand before he could even think, and with a practiced throw, it flew through the air, slamming into the machine's head. The impact sent the robot crashing to the ground in a shower of sparks, but more were already on the way.

"We've got more incoming!" Bucky called out from the front, firing off shots from his rifle that hit their mark with deadly precision. "They're not giving us any breathing room!"

The Captain and his two followers quickly showed off the power of their suits as they fired up their advanced weapon systems, their arms aimed at the incoming robots light up as powerful energy blasts rained down on the enemy.

The three would target the same robot, blasting it with overwhelming power and force until it was destroyed before all targeting the next one. This proved to be very effective as they were able to do this while flying backwards without a problem, giving the rest room to retreat under their covering fire.
