Chereads / The landlord of Mankayane [Novel] / Chapter 12 - Part 2 (6)

Chapter 12 - Part 2 (6)

In the middle of the night, the 1961 black Jaguar E-type penetrated the yard of the manor house.

At the sight of the Master with his newborn, a maid named Jeanne, about twenty-five years of age, who was outside feeding the big dog, a German shepherd, halted her chore and immediately ran toward the baron.

She greeted him by slightly bowing the head and took the infant from him. She barely paid attention to the driver Lungelo, for they had a little quarrel in the morning.

The servant Jeanne then murmured a few nice words to the toddler's ears and hurried to the landlord's private apartments upstairs, leaving the latter behind, to hand over the infant to her Mistress Mrs. Pola who was worryingly waiting for her loved ones' comeback.

In no time, the maid Jeanne was in front of the door of the Master's room. She knocked and the head housemaid Maria opened the egress.

The latter was struck when she saw her subaltern Jeanne with the newborn in her hands. She took the infant from her and uttered to her Mistress that the kid was back home.

"Praise the lord!" Mrs. Pola exclaimed as she sighed.

She asked Maria to quickly pass the toddler on to her because he had long stayed unfed. She unbuttoned her night cloth, pulled her left breast out, and nourished the baby.

In the meantime, someone knocked at the door and then opened it without waiting for an invitation to come in.

Mrs. Pola and the housekeeper Maria turned their gaze at the egress and saw the charismatic physique of the Master of the house.

Mr. Paddy looked very elegant in his favorite gray three-piece suit with his black and white Oxford shoes.

He laid his eyes on the mural clock behind his desk and it was 11:10 pm. He walked up to the marital bed and kissed his wife Pola on the forehead while she was breastfeeding their kid.

The landlord then turned his focus on the head housemaid Maria and expressed his gratitude to her for her commitment toward her Mistress.

Maria was humble and answered back that she was simply fulfilling her duties and took advantage of the occasion to remind the baron about the paycheck of the midwife Sarah he was supposed to have already sent to her.

He felt very sorry since it was late to commission a servant to the old lady's house.

However, he went to his desk right away, pulled out the drawer, and removed the checkbook. He signed one of the rectangular white papers and slid the sheet into an envelope that he sealed.

Mr. Paddy returned to Maria, gave her the envelope containing the midwife's paycheck, and tasked her to forward it early in the morning to the old lady.

Neither his wife Pola nor the head housemaid ever knew the amount of the payment. Though, giving the baron well-known generosity, they believed it was surely significant.

Mrs. Pola was now done feeding the infant who was already sleepy. She passed him on to the housekeeper Maria who laid him in his cradle that she had prepared while he was out with his dad.

The infant dozed instantly.

Maria thereupon thought it was time for her to leave her Master and Mistress alone. So she packed the stuff she had brought to take care of the new mother and began to exit the room.

And as she was doing so, she queried Mr. Paddy if he wished to be served dinner in his private space or downstairs.

The landlord answered that it was very late and with extreme fatigue, he was rather going to sleep.

Nonetheless, he instructed the head housemaid to roast turkey for tomorrow lunch because he was expecting a visitor by the name of Siyabonga who had been helpful during their journey in the day.

Maria assured the landlord that his order would be executed to the letter and she finally left.
