It was almost noon when Fen Lei had arrived in the neighboring village of Kelna. Starting at the foot of the Angu-An mountain, one had to travel through three villages to get to Kelna. He Jin's portal had sent Fen Lei to the first village, and thus, Fen Lei had to travel through the remaining two villages to reach his destination. He had not dared to open another portal for fear of being sent to random places again. Or worse, being sent back to Shin Lu's room."Damn that kid. He could have sent me directly to Kelna through his portal. Does he despise me that much for making me walk a long way?" he muttered as he sat on a pile of logs under the tree. Walking for two hours in the sun was undoubtedly exhausting. Fortunately, his new body was accustomed to it.He took a look around, observing the people around him. They were all occupied with their respective activities. "It is the village before Kelna. I should hurry." Just as he was about to resume his walk, his stomach rumbled. "I suppose I should first fill my stomach."He opened his belt-hung purse, and all he found was a shining and shimmering ten-ruu coin. He cursed under his breath. What could a ten-ruu coin get him? But he was not surprised anymore. When had He Jin ever thought about giving him enough money anyway? He could not help but miss his previous life, where he had been able to feed himself with whatever food he wanted."Young gentleman, would you like to try my cream-filled bun?"Fen Lei looked at the man standing in front of the bakery. This man was the owner of the place."I have no money," Fen Lei answered as he began to walk away. But before he could get past the bakery, the man stopped him, trying to give him a bun. "Come on, handsome gentleman. It is a must-try.""Mister, I have no money to pay you.""That is fine. Just try it." The man was insistent.Fen Lei gave him a long look before accepting the bun. He was not sure if it was a free taste or if the man was just being generous. All he knew was that he needed to fill his growling stomach. Given his hunger, it was difficult to refuse anyway."How delectable!" His face brightened up after munching on the bun."Right? Have some more, hehe." The man smiled and handed another bun to Fen Lei. Of course, he was delighted, as Fen Lei was his very first customer of the day.The cream-filled bun was not too big or too small. Its size was sufficient to keep a rumbling stomach at bay for a day. Fen Lei was reminded of a Bavarian donut. However, bavarian had a softer texture and were smaller in size compared to these cream-filled buns, which were double or triple the size of a bavarian."Mister, is there something unusual going on in this village?" asked Fen Lei."Something unusual? Hmm..." The man stroked his chin, thinking carefully. "There is none here, but there is in the neighboring village."Fen Lei pretended to be unaware of the situation. "In the village of Kelna?""Yes, that is right. Many residents of that village vanished without a trace, and it has been going on for three nights now," the man replied."How did that happen?""Nobody has confirmed what caused it, but I have heard it has something to do with dark arts. Their prime suspect is a young woman who, rumors have it, practices necromancy.""Necromancy..." mumbled Fen Lei after finishing the last bite of the bun."But who knows for sure? That is entirely based on gossip. But if that is the case, that child will certainly meet her last breath," the man added.Fen Lei was in deep thought as he asked, "Mister, what do you think about the Crimson Necromancer?"The man gave him a frown. "What kind of question is that? He uses dark arts. Of course, he is evil. Anyone who practices dark arts is evil."The man kept speaking, but Fen Lei had become so pensive that he was no longer paying attention. Questions he had been attempting to seek answers to flooded his mind once more. It was as if he had dived into a fathomless river. To him, Li Yuan did not seem evil but rather the opposite. Just what exactly were his goals for taking the dark path? But what, after all, was considered evil and good?"I see. I have to go then." Fen Lei was about to leave when the man stopped him."What do you mean you have to go? Where is your payment? One cream-filled bread costs eight ruu, and you ate two of them." The man extended his palm. "Now, pay me a total of sixteen ruu before you leave.""I told you I did not have any money," Fen Lei replied, frowning."Then why did you eat them!" the man grumbled.Fen Lei was irritated. "You said it was fine! Are you trying to dupe me?""Hah! It appears that you have no intention of paying. I will report you!""Hey, wait! Fine, I will pay you!" Fen Lei opened his purse and let the ten-ruu coin fall onto his palm. "But I can only give you ten ruu. It is the last of my money."The man sighed and snatched the coin from Fen Lei's hand. "Choose. Pay your balance or stay here and work for me until the end of the day."Fen Lei's eyes dilated. "But I still have work to do!""Then I will report you!""Ah! Fine!"Having no other option, Fen Lei accepted the man's terms and remained at the bakery to sell bread. The bakery did not seem to be preferred by many, as it only had a few customers. There were many people around, but most of them did not bother to look at the goods on display.Fen Lei yawned, his gaze fixed on the cream-filled buns on the bread rack. He had been sitting for an hour and had not seen another customer. Another yawn escaped his lips, followed by his eyes closing in preparation for a nap. But, he was not able to begin his nap as he immediately sensed the presence of someone approaching the area.He blinked open his eyes and rose, preparing to assist the approaching customer. The customer soon walked into the bakery dressed in a dazzling ankle-length white silk robe and a conical hat with a hip-length white sheer fabric attached to its entire brim. This customer's entrance was elegantly blinding; it was as if he were a god who had just descended from heaven. However, Fen Lei's jaw dropped as soon he realized who this customer was. He immediately broke out in a cold sweat upon remembering what had happened a few nights before."S-snow white?"Shin Lu's fierce eyes fell on him, making his hair stand on end."A-ah! I mean, Elder Shin! Haha, we meet again."Shin Lu kept his murderous gaze fixed on him. Fen Lei, on the other hand, forced a cheerful smile on his face as he prayed for his salvation. Although it seemed unlikely, he still hoped Shin Lu had already forgotten what had happened the last time. But what was there to be afraid of anyway when Shin Lu had done something even more disrespectful to him than he had? Fen Lei's intrusion into Shin Lu's room had been unintentional, and he had even apologized for it, whereas Shin Lu had attempted to undress him without permission. Was that not a form of harassment?"Exactly! That is harassment! How dare he get angry at me when he was the one who started it," Fen Lei thought. "But still, gods of this world. Save me from this menstruating man!"The atmosphere was growing tense, and thus, Fen Lei tried to alter it. "I-I work here! And today is my first day! Hahaha!"Shin Lu's gaze shifted to the door behind Fen Lei. Noticing this, Fen Lei immediately understood. "Is Elder Shin looking for the owner? He just left. He has something important to attend to, which is why I am the only one here now, hehe."Shin Lu did not utter a word and looked next at the bread on display. As Fen Lei stood there watching the other decide what to buy, an idea struck him. His smile became even more cheerful. "These cream-filled buns are something Elder Shin should try; they taste good," he suggested, pointing at them.Shin Lu took a moment to contemplate the buns. "Are they sweet?""Does Elder Shin like sweets?" asked Fen Lei, but all he received from Shin Lu was a deadly "why the fuck do you care?" look. "Ah haha! Yes! They are sweet! Is Elder Shin going to try some? How many will he buy?""Five."Fen Lei's lips curled into a barely visible smirk. "One cream-filled bun costs twenty ruu. Elder Shin says he will purchase five of them. A hundred ruu in total."Shin Lu did not seem to have any reservations about the price, as he simply placed his payment on top of the bread rack. Fen Lei, on the other hand, was astonished to see him appear unconcerned about spending money. "Was snow white always this rich?" he thought."Perhaps Elder Shin wants to know how sweet these buns are."Shin Lu looked at him."They are as sweet as my smile every time I see Elder Shin." Fen Lei flashed a smile and winked at him."Disgustful." Shin Lu gave him a stern look before grabbing the bag of buns and exiting the bakery.Fen Lei could not help but burst into laughter. He had not expected such a dignified person as Shin Lu to be easy to dupe. Or perhaps because Shin Lu was simply wealthy that he did not care much about the cost of anything he purchased, even if it was unreasonable. It was an hour after Shin Lu had left when the owner returned. Fen Lei had been able to pay his balance and leave the bakery. The owner had been initially skeptical as to how Fen Lei had been able to get money, but Fen Lei had explained that one of the previous customers was a friend of his and had lent him money when the truth was he had simply overpriced the buns he had sold to Shin Lu.A liar he was.Shin Lu had purchased five cream-filled buns and had paid a total of one hundred ruu. If each bun's original price was eight ruu and Fen Lei had sold each to Shin Lu for twenty ruu, then Fen Lei had received sixty ruu. Less his six ruu balance, for a total of fifty-four ruu.He now had money thanks to his duping skills. It did not take him an hour to get to Kelna. The sun was still high in the sky, and while the neighboring village was bustling and lively, Kelna had a dreary atmosphere. Even the fewer number of people in the village was noticeable.Occupied with observing the surroundings as he walked, he accidentally bumped into an old lady."Ah! I am sorry! I was not paying attention!" He immediately assisted in picking up the contents of the old lady's baskets after seeing them spilled all over the ground. He bowed his head after and once again made an apology to the old lady. The old lady, on the other hand, did not say a word and simply smiled while shaking her head. Fen Lei could not help but feel a tinge of melancholy in his chest as he looked at the old lady. He was reminded of his late grandmother."These are a little too heavy for grandma to carry. If she does not mind, I would like to help her," he suggested, and the old lady nodded in response. It did not take them long to get to the old lady's house, as it was only a few steps away. Fen Lei gently opened the door and placed the baskets on the table. The thatched house was small and cramped, with only one bedroom that could barely accommodate two people."Is there anything else I can do for grandma?"The old lady responded with a shake of her head and handed Fen Lei a small pouch. Fen Lei was confused at first, but he immediately understood it. He opened the pouch and found several sachets of dried herbs inside."Grandma is kind enough to give me these medications, but I cannot accept them. Grandma should keep these as she might need them soon." He politely handed the pouch back to the old lady.Just as he was about to speak again, the door swung open, and a lady entered. "Grandma Lin, have you brought the medicines?" The lady immediately halted upon noticing Fen Lei's presence. "Who are you?"Grandma Lin bowed her head before making several hand gestures to the lady. Fen Lei, on the other hand, could only watch as the two communicated with each other, puzzled."I understand, grandma," the lady said, shifting her gaze to Fen Lei and eyeing him from head to toe. "Do you have anything else keeping you here, mister?""Nothing, I just wanted to assist grandma in carrying the baskets," Fen Lei replied."So, why are you still here? Waiting for a payment?" asked the lady sarcastically. The lady was intimidating, but Fen Lei was unfazed. He was instead irritated by her demeanor that he could not refrain from rolling his eyes at her."I have to go, grandma. Take care." Fen Lei waved goodbye to Grandma Lin and exited the house. However, he had only taken a few steps away from the house when he heard the lady's voice. "Wait. You look familiar."Fen Lei came to a halt and turned to face her.The lady contemplated him for a few moments. "I recall now. You are that archery freak...""What freak? I am not a freak!" Fen Lei objected with a scowl. The lady, on the other hand, did not seem to mind his words and simply resumed speaking, "...and my brother's pathetic admirer."
