Chapter 3 - DATE: 24/05/2167

I woke up again, this time I felt sore. It had been difficult for me to adapt to sleeping away from home. I rubbed my sleepy eyes as I rolled my way out. I sat up to stretch my body a bit before packing my sleeping materials off the floor. Lu had already been up. She was crouching outside while carrying my bag. At least she was helpful after what she did. In the sun where she stood ----- I mean----- crouched, I could see her better. She had bulky dark brown hair, an oval face that held warm, doe-like, brown eyes that glittered in the sun, and pink thin lips, she had dark skin with a slim physique.

"Finally, you're awake." She stood straight while giving me a stern look.

It looked like she was mad at me. I should have been the one angry and not her but I guess things just didn't want to go my way. Maybe she became angry because she was waiting for me.

"Why did you wait?" I asked her impatiently as I also looked at her sternly.

"I saw this," She held out the note I found at the library, "I was also wondering where everyone went. I thought that if I came with you, I might see them again."

"Again?" I wondered what she meant by 'AGAIN'.

"Yea. The streets were always full of 'em."

"Trash?"

"No! I meant people!" She hissed back. This time she seemed angrier, "They just someday vanished. I woke up, I didn't remember how I fell asleep, and there was no one."

"It had also been like that for me except, I did not remember anything… not even how to talk."

Our conversation suddenly petered out.

I picked up my coat and boots. I tried to clean the soil off them but it would not come off. It was already dry and scaly; it was just gross.

"Wear it like that." Lu had begun to grow more impatient. She scratched her legs with her bare feet as she stood waiting. I put it on in disgust as we made our way through the torn-down city in silence.

Sometimes, I stole glances at her, to see if I was hallucinating. Apparently, I wasn't.

"I thought of a name for you….", Lu played with her bulky afro hair, "How about Murray?"

"Murray?", I closed my eyes to think about it, "No, it doesn't sound right."

"Tch." She puffed her cheeks.

It seemed like I only annoyed her more. She quickened her pace and walked angrily as I tried to keep up with her. After a while of keeping pace, the sky had grown darker, making the environment's color drain. With a gentle rumble and a flash, the first drop of rain I had seen in four years landed on my palm. I gazed in awe at the color of the rain. It was a light green shade. Suddenly I felt excruciating pain on the spot where it had dropped. I immediately rubbed my hand against my coat only to reveal a red spot on my hand. It was acid rain…. that was highly acidic.

Another drop had fallen on the ground. The spot where it landed had turned watery. That explained the murky water. Lu stepped backward; her face had suddenly grown pale.

"Run." She said with fear in her eyes.

Before I could blink, she had already begun running. She was very fast, almost like the wind. More rain had drizzled down, and that had made me scared,

"W-wait for me!" I screamed as my legs quivered and buckled with fear. I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, I felt the rain hit me severally, each time accompanied by a burning sensation. The soil began to cave in as well making my movement awkward. Something pulled me under a huge slab, and I fell to the ground, face flat. I looked up to see Lu, she had red spots over her skin.

"You're so slow." She slumped on the floor while panting.

"Was that supposed to be rain?" I asked, still laying on the warm floor.

"I guess so." She curled her arms around her knees.

I sighed as I sat up. The dirt on my clothes had melted off. It had become even grosser; the soil had somehow made its way to my hands. I rubbed it against the slab hurriedly to remove the gross soil. I retched, even more, when I saw bits of it stuck to my hand.

I heard a loud rumble that made me drop to the ground.

"It's thunder," Lu said, her eyes seeming to be clouded with thoughts… perhaps memories.

"Thunder…", I muttered under my breath. In all the books I read, I never thought that thunder would be this loud. I rubbed my face to soothe the burning pain. It only made it worse; it was so bad I felt like running back to the library but the falling rain immediately dismissed my thought. I hissed in pain, while Lu giggled at me. It seemed she enjoyed seeing me suffer.

"Very funny," I said back to her. She giggled even more. I could not help but smile. Her face looked very cute, despite all the scars. Had the scars not been there, I'm sure her face would have been…. splendiferous.

The rain had increased, more than it was last time, it had even begun to slowly creep into the shelter where Lu and I were. I looked up to the sky to see that some of its colors returned. It was no longer a sickening shade of gray but had a slight tint of blue that was almost invisible.

"Lu…"

She was already fast asleep, maybe the endless running had tired her. I decided to retire for the day as well. The falling rain, the pain, and the thunder had made it difficult to sleep...
