One good thing that came out of this pretend engagement with Keith is that I've been able to talk to my mother again. I was so worried during the days I didn't get to talk to her, but it looks like she's doing great. She has recovered from her most recent surgery two years ago, but she still undergoes constant monitoring by medical staff. She barely speaks to me about it, always reassuring me that she's fine. Something changed in her though, she's not as bright as she once was.

It's a Wednesday early morning when I receive a call from her as I am making breakfast. My mother sneezes and rubs her nose and my heart instantly sinks to my stomach. "Are you okay, ma?"

"It's nothing. Just sniffles. There was a breeze last night and I stayed out on the balcony longer than I should've," she says.
