William did this on purpose indeed. He could understand why this father issued such a spar request at the moment he met him. But for a moment there, he felt Callom was slightly overreacting thanks to what Berry just did. And so he decided to tease him further by what he just did.
Just seeing such a reaction from Berry's father was enough for anyone to do what William did back then. He was grateful he didn't stick behind, or perhaps he'd not have gone out of this clan's clutches for a long time.
But William didn't know that this was how this caring father used to get to know people better.
He was such a strict spirit master, even on himself and those close to him. He didn't like talking to get to know others.
As he always kept saying: Tongues can lie and cover up fake spirits and twist intentions, but swords don't.
So, he issued this challenge to get to know William better, and to see how capable and promising William was.
