They were controlling the current pace of battle to make everyone retreat in a few hours towards the portal and leave. That entirely depended on the fact that the gate was about to get ready for use. But now they have to last for more hours here.
They already spent most of their traps and arrays over stopping the hostile forces, and never tried to lead the charge towards the enemies to maintain the loss count as low as possible.
They also didn't want to do that to not give the enemy any chance to break through their frontline. But that now changed.
