Chapter 1 - A Whole new Civilization

Nick strained himself to open his eyes, and he was immediately blinded by the bright white. His eyes were not used to seeing such bright lighting his entire life. Something wasn't right, was there ever a place on fallen that could boast such bright lights?

When his eyes were now adjusted to the lighting, Nick saw that he was in a square room about 5 meters in length on all sides. The room was white with nothing in it, and the cool temperature in the room made Nick feel as if he was in some kind of science experiment. Either that or he was being held in custody for further investigation.

"Hello ?? ...can anyone hear me?" Nick looks around as he tries to find anything that could resemble an exit.

[ Good morning, may I please ask for your name please?] like an announcement, a voice began to fill the room. Finally, Nick could try and get some answers to what was going on.

" My name is Nick, and you?"

[Bridget. I am your assigned resettlement assistant, I will be helping you set up and ready to live a new life here on Magnus Serena.]

[Let's start with a brief introduction of the pla- .....Yes?]

" Before we begin may I just ask, how did I get here in the first place?" Nick asked after raising his hand to indicate he had a question.

[There was an error during the initial test of project Exodus. A machine that bends space and time had been created to travel back to the Original earth. Our goal was to perform the largest migration ever done by mankind and we were to bring all living creatures from the original earth to this new planet and civilisation of Magnus Serena.]

[During a field trial of the machine we were able to successfully open a gateway to earth, however, the whole was not big enough for our purpose. The data we collected detected an anomaly.]

[ In the end, you were sucked in by the gateway from earth to Magnus.....the opposite is also true of Dr. Thembalani. The machine has since stopped working and it has been decided to go ahead and get you resettled as soon as possible.]

Nick took a few steps back in shock. This was a lot to take in. He stood there for a minute in silence saying nothing as he thought of his next move. After much thought, Nick reasoned there was not much he could do since he could not go back. And besides, the original plan Magnus Serena had was to bring them all here. Nick had just gotten a head start and he decided to take the chance.

"Okay ma'am, how do we go about this....resettlement?"

[We can start with a brief introduction to the planet. This is Magnus Serena, it is a small moon orbiting the Veritus planet. The planet has 4 moons in orbit and the planet itself orbits around the white dwarf star called Sergi 43. Our whole solar system is much bigger than the one in the milky way galaxy. ]

[On Magnus only one government exists, the Magnus Republic. It is responsible for all legislative, administrative, and organisational measures required for all things to run smoothly. The Republic has a class system, meaning that all citizens are mandated to choose a class and are accessed by class officials whether they meet the standards to remain in such a class. ]

[All classes are treated the same, with a few administrative classes getting extra benefits. But in most cases, all classes are given equal status...well except one class.... the classless. These haven't been given status in the society of the Republic. These refuse to contribute to Society in any capacity or form.]

" Okay, may I see the classes?"

[Sure! :) ]

The white wall in front of Nick began to display a list of classes and their roles. As his eyes Nick had a stern look to him, he had decided to take this resettlement as a fresh start and was determined to make the most of it.

[ Administrator - tasked with working at different branch offices of the Republic, processing the paperwork, and doing Administration tasks needed for the Republic to operate.]

[Enforcer - tasked with the role of enforcing the rules and guidelines the Republic should live by. They also have the role of protecting citizens in case of disasters and invasion threats. They are also responsible for keeping the Admin class in check.]

[Producer - tasked with producing, processing, or refining raw materials used by the Republic. This includes agriculture, mining, and so on.]

[Creator - Tasked with designing, manufacturing, or fabricating products used by the Republic.]

[Explorer - Tasked with research and exploration missions.]

[Merchants - tasked with trade and distribution activities for the Republic]

[Carer - provide practical assistance in caring for the specific needs of the citizens of the republic.]

As Nick looked at these seven classes, a frown came on his face.

"Which one of these classes handles repairs?"

[Oh....we do not have repair technicians on Magnus. Was that your line of trade on earth?]

"I was a mechanic."

[mmmmhm would you be willing to go change trades?]

"No...what do you do with faulty products anyway?"

[.....most faulty products are given to the classless since they do not have access to credits. Products that are faulty enough to be a safety hazard are disposed of. These are sent for decomposition at planet veritus. All recycling is done remotely by the producer class.]

Nick was not in a tricky situation. All his life repairing and repurposing faulty gadgets was his trade. Back on earth production of new products became so difficult to do, so much so that only those in the upper echelon of earth's population had the privilege and access to such products. As a result, people with the skills to repair or repurpose gadgets were an integral part of earth's society. They called them 'mechanics', Nick was one such mechanic.

He scratched his chin as he deeply contemplated this predicament. He had never done any other trade than being a mechanic. He had also grown attached to this trade and was not willing to give it up. Granted his new home did not need mechanics, so if he were to stick to his guns and refuse any other trade he would essentially be useless, without a role to play in the republic.

After 5 long minutes of silence, Bridget finally asked,

[..have you made up your mind yet? ]

"In a minute," said Nick as his whole body seemed to have frozen in place to allow his brain to go overdrive, in hopes of finding a solution that was satisfactory to him.

Suddenly, his eyebrows raised as if to indicate he had finally found the answer.

"Alright, I'm ready to make the choice now."

[Okay what will it be?]

"I choose to remain classless." Nick said with a sense of conviction in his voice.

[....]
