I walked out of the weapons shop with a decent amount of supplies some dried food, refills on my water (free of charge), a sword holder, and Numis even had me buy a small rune engraving kit. I was about out of money, but some of the art I had made put me in a better spot I was left with about 700 bern. I had learned from asking around that apparently the town was going to battle today at the north entrance of town. I was at least a little curious, so I ended up going to the north entrance some brutish man approached me. He said in a rough tone, "Hey you kid are you an adventurer I see you are well equipped?" I grimaced, "Yeah I am from Gensia I was just stopping here to resupply."
The man did a cheesy smile, "Hey kid you want to make some dough?" I sighed, "Yeah doesn't everyone? Got a job?" The man's eyes glowed, "Yeah we are going to battle with Northfall the town north of Falrock its only a couples miles up the road here. The major is paying people in bulk to take part in the battle want me to sign you up? I hear Northfall is just home to some rogue beastkin easy money kid easy money." I figured the best way to get him off my back was to agree, "Yeah sure sign me up I could use the money." The man rubbed his hands together, "Great glad to have another for the battle." He walked away to look for more people to hassle I guess he was one of the kings recruiters.
I heard some people nearby a tall man with a scars covering his body was talking to a lanky man with a bored expression. The tall man said to the lanky man, "Hey it would see the king is getting desperate for people I hear the beastkin are giving his guards a bigger run for his money." The lanky man responded, "Yeah seems they are getting anyone who is anyone to fight for them seems kind of desperate if you ask me. The amount of fuss the king has gone through just to taker out some beastkin doesn't seem worth it if you ask me." I started towards the north entrance I talked to some guards before they let me out the front of Falrock.
Numis seeing that I was alone finally chimed in, "Not gonna join them Kreyol seems like a decent job if you ask me." I spat out, "Numis if there is one thing I don't like in this world it is the strong ganging up on the weak I am going to Northfall I want the full story. I don't like this at all, and I sure as hell wouldn't feel good about participating in a battle I know nothing about." Numis raised an eyebrow, "Why don't we just move on then it isn't exactly are business to interfere with disputes between towns." I sighed, " I suppose it would be easier to just ignore, but after what happened in Gensia I want to ease the unfairness in this world if even just a little."
Numis seemed to silently understand she had peaked at my memories after all, so she saw how it felt for me to be at the mercy of others. I was sick of it I wanted to see for myself whether these beastkin were in the wrong, or if they were also at the mercy of others. I guess Northfall wasn't super far I could already see the entrance it was only a few miles up the road. Once we got closer Numis pointed out, "I hope you don't think you can just walk into Northfall if they see any humans I imagine they will kill you on site." I smirked at Numis, "Heh guess you didn't notice what else I bought in Falrock I took out black garments, and a skull mask."
It didnt cost much so I bought it at a stand in town they were selling some other cursed items too, but I figured these would make for a good disguise. Numis replied, "I truly can't believe I am contracted to such a immature eighteen year-old, you can't just march into the front entrance with that stupid outfit." I put on the mask, and the garments that covered by body from head to toe, and put the cloth hood over my ears. I smirked under the mask, "Huh, and what is stopping me don't I look cool?" Numis looked annoyed, "Kreyol don't even think about it remember our lives are linked if you die I die." I laughed, "Calm down we have no way to sneak in anyways not like we can phase through walls."
Numis mocked, "Unlike you I actually brought my brain to Northfall we do have a way to sneak in undetected, and you can even keep on your little Halloween outfit." I frowned, "What how?" Numis didnt speak she just flew to the east of the town, and I followed behind her bewildered. The town had one entrance in the front just like Falrock, and it was surrounded by wooden walls on all sides. The walls had spikes carved into them so climbing was not an option inside the only real way in was through the front. We walked at a distance, so we weren't spotted as we approached Falrock's east side. I stared up at the high walls they must of been at least over 20 feet I wondered how she planned on getting over these high walls.
I pondered, "We can't climb these walls you get that right?" Numis claimed, "No we will be going through them." I was shocked, I doubted, "What I was just kidding when I said about phasing through walls you can't be serious." Numis shrugged, "Your little comment got me thinking we actually can do that. Kreyol remember I might not look it, but I am a goddess namely one that controls souls I have limits at the moment, but this is a trivial skill." Trivial really that seemed pretty impressive to me, but I guess our definitions of the word varied quite a bit.
She gave a rare smile, "Grab my hand I will begin the magic it will last only a few seconds, so trust me, and quickly make your way through the wall." I grabbed Numis' hand she began chanting in a weird language again, but after a few seconds we both began to faintly become transparent. I guess that was my queue to step forward, I felt a strange sensation as we passed through the wall, and my vision blurred for a moment. Once we passed through she beamed, "Now is this not better than getting yourself killed at the front entrance." I didn't want to admit it, but her plan was a lot better than mine.
I looked around it would appear we were behind some wooden houses they were notably more shabby than the ones we saw at Falrock. I walked from out from behind the small houses, and it would seem the town was smaller than I imagined from the outside. The houses were close together, and the town square was in viewing distance, so it was also more open. The town looked more like a refugee camp since there were tents, and small camps everywhere. I saw some beastskin walking around on the dirt path they didn't seem to notice me yet, but they were similar in looks to humans. The major differences I saw were the fact they had animal ears, and tails, or sometimes sharp nails that extended far out of their hand.
These characteristics varied from person to person since they seemed to be descended from different animals. I was trying to hide from view since I mainly just wanted to get as much information as I could. I was dashing from house to house trying to find someone who looked alone, so I could ask them a few questions. Most people were walking around town in groups, so I had little chances to stop anyone along the way. I was makin my way a long the side of the town when I heard footsteps coming up from behind me.
I turned to see what was going on suddenly out of nowhere once I turned around a young man around my age with blue hair approached me. I didn't even hear him coming oh god did he know I was a human, and was coming to take me out. I guarded myself preparing for the worst I could see his eyes widen once he saw the outfit I was wearing. He spoke in a gruff voice, "State your name I smell something odd from you. What is that outfit you are wearing take that mask off, so I can see your face." I heard on route from Numis that beastkin had amazing noses they could identify their own kind easily, so I made sure to rub some spices on my body beforehand. Unfortunately it would seem that just had the opposite effect, and in fact led him right to me.
The young man raised a small short sword to my face, "I said state your name or be killed where you stand." I muttered, "John Hands." The man stated, "Take your mask off John and I will just take you to the boss." I did as I was told, but hoped he wouldn't ask me to take off my cloak since that would reveal my ears. Once he saw my face he softened slightly, "Huh you are just a kid. I thought you were some kind of assassin given your outfit, but I guess you are just getting ready for Halloween." I heard Numis' voice in my head, "I told you." The man sheathed his blade and responded, "Alright follow me I still don't recognize you, so as a precaution I will take you to the boss."
