Chapter 66 - First Dance

"Would you care for a dance?"

Selene

I forgot to practise dancing, because there was never a instance where Selene had to dance

Selene mostly locked herself in her training room or alchemy room increasing her proficiency with combat and potion making.

She did remember that her mother asked her to learn more how to dance from her servant, Elsa, but she forgot right after, because she was in the breakthrough of making the potion she had been attempting to make for a month.

Her mother was too busy attending with the guest and the venue that she even needed Aurora's help in the past two weeks.

The last time she remembered dancing was a year ago in her manners lesson, but that was ages ago and it was only briefly mentioned and enacted.

She also hated those lessons because she already memorised and ingrained all the manners in her head, though dancing was one of the things she didn't practise avidly.

Selene can't refuse Theo, because they agreed on acting in love for the sake of the story and convenience.

Selene

Theo

Selene wanted to end Theo then and there.

He wanted to cave his face in and throw him to the sewers.

Selene clenched her fist hard before breathing a sigh of resignation.

She stretched her hand and offered her hand to Theo with a bright smile on her face

Selene

Theo smirked internally as stood up from kneeling and guided Selene to the dance floor.

Selene.

All spectators were in position with their eyes all on the two shining stars of the evening.

Theodore Ignatius and Selene Aventus stood in the middle of the dance floor for a few seconds, waiting for the music to start once more.

Theo placed his hand on Selene's waist, Selene's on Theo's broad shoulder with both their other hands clasped in a gentle grip.

Everyone waited for a bated breath for the two to start moving.

Selene and Theo's eyes stared at each other that very moment, when the wind instruments took a breath, when the bows were lifted from the strings and fingers adjusting to hit their notes.

Selene and Theo felt it, it was the same phenomenon they felt multiple times already.

They smiled at each other and enjoyed the warmth both felt on their hands.

Their tensed bodies observed by hundreds of spectators, relaxed.

Their eyebrows smoothened and their posture more dignified than ever.

Both of them breathed a single breath and exhaled with all of their unnecessary thoughts leaving their minds.

"Selene" Theo muttered quietly that only Selene could hear him

"Yeah?" Selene said with a cute tilt and a genuine smile.

"Ready?" Theo spoke in an earnest tone.

Selene nodded and the music started.

Theo led and Selene followed. One step at a time. It was a melody Theo was familiar with. It was a song that started slow then picks up the pace as it plays to the end.

A song that made him trip a number of times when he practised it with his mother.

His mother told him that she won't add this song to the list that would be played, but someone clearly rigged the song with the intention of embarrassing Selene and Theo's dance performance.

"Looks like someone's trying to wish for our embarrassing display" Theo said as he spun Selene around in a beautiful arc

Selene gracefully performed her spin and replied to Theo with a smirk on her face.

"Let's show them what we're made of shall we?"

TARAN!*

The song picked up the pace

The wind instruments roared in a beautiful symphony and the bows slithering into a hurried pace.

Many went off the dancefloor hearing the change of pace of the song. Only experienced dancers stayed to perform and The two shining stars retained their position on the centre of the dance floor, unfazed by the change and danced in a swift and beautiful manner with the beat.

All spectators gasped at the sight of the two prodigies' dazzling dance.

They were not only keeping up with the song, they were performing at a level that many have not seen before.

Every other dancer was overshadowed by Selene and Theo. They glided through the gaps of people with unparalleled grace, not bumping to a single person as they moved vigorously in the tune of the song.

Selene and Theo felt like they were sucked into their own world.

To the duo, all there was is the music and the person in front of them, nothing else.

The rest of the world, to them, was just a blurry image in the background that they ignored.

Their bodies moved possessed by an unknown power compelling the duo to dance their hearts out.

Their blood pumped with exhilaration, their bodies heated up in anticipation with each predicted movement their instinct was instilling them.

Theo and Selene once more stared at each as the pace of the song slowly died down into a mellow melody.

Their bodies, close and intimate.

Their warmth and heat radiating to the other.

They placed their foreheads together.

Theo felt the ticklish feeling from Selene's hair touching his cheek, making him silently chuckle

Selene stroked Theo's shoulder gently with care, relishing on the feeling she felt in her beating heart.

The song slowly finished as Theo spun Selene one more time, ending their first waltz.

Then the effects of the Resonance wore off, but both still basked in the lingering feelings they were experiencing.

Excitement, exhilaration, happiness, joy, pride and more, pumped through their veins.

They clasped each others' hands as they spoke in a whisper to each other

"I'm impressed, you danced well. Your lucky Resonance activated to save you from impending shame"

"Even without Resonance I'd still perform in the same level if you gave me time to practise"

Theo instead of his usual mischievous grin, simply smiled innocently at Selene and giggled.

"Well no one is as beautiful and competent as you after all."

Selene instead of getting embarrassed, scoffed and replied in a pleasant voice, a rare attitude that Theo rarely witnessed.

"I guess, having a handsome genius as you with clear and vivid memories made it easier for me after all"

Selene and Theo stared at each other as if they were trapped in their own world.

Selene was glad that they had to experience this, a peaceful and wonderful moment that she could look back to.

The lingering feeling of the world's fate in her hands and back still weighed heavily in her mind. She knew the future was only about to get worse than the problems they solved over the past two years.

But Selene once again realised today that the existence of Theo was something she woefully needed.

And here he was in front of her in his arms and in hers.

She was happy.

Badump*

Eh?

A strange feeling welled up from within Selene.

A clear heartbeat that was different from the usual.

Selene glanced up at Theo once more, looking straight into his crimson eyes.

Badump*

It happened again....

Selene was confused. One pump of the strange heartbeat sent shocks throughout her body, tingling in a strange and foreign way.

Badump*

What is this?

Selene suddenly felt her chest tighten and her breath become erratic.

Her body trembled and increased in temperature.

What's happening to me?

Selene became afraid, not knowing what feeling that lingered within her chest, before it got worse she hear a voice calling out to her

"Selene? Are you ok?"

Theo noticed that Selene's palms became warmer and sweatier, wondering if there was something wrong with her partner.

Selene hearing Theo's voice suddenly snapped her from her daze, but her heart kept beating faster and faster as she stared into Theo's eyes, until she couldn't handle it anymore.

Thud*

Her body moved on its own. Resonance didn't even activate, her inner feelings simply overtook her as if overloaded and embraced Theo from the front.

Selene felt relieved and her heart slowly went back to normal, calming her down and removing the weird and foreign feeling from her chest, instead she felt at peace in the arms of Theo.

Theo inadvertently became stiff at the unusual actions Selene made.

He knew that he wasn't affected by Resonance, because he couldn't really understand what was happening in the head of Selene.

"What's wrong, Sele-!"

CLAP!* CLAP!* CLAP!* CLAP!* CLAP!* CLAP!*

The spectators finally snapped out of their daze at the wonderful performance and clapped at the two dancers embracing on the centre of the dancefloor.

Theo scratched his cheek in embarrassment and tapped Selene on the shoulder, telling her that they needed to bow.

Selene reluctantly let go of Theo and bowed together with him as they left the Dance floor with many still clapping at them.
