Chapter 2 - 2: Orientation Day

[Edited]

Today was the day for orientation and I was feeling nervous. Nathan woke me after 5 saying I should get ready by half an hour to join the rest of the students in the morning hall where breakfast was kept every morning from 6-7. Looking into the mirror I fixed my hair and bangs, they were getting a bit long and needed to be cut soon. "Hey hurry up, we can't be late or less we are getting  detention," Nathan stated. If I'm being honest enough, this didn't feel like a school more like a ... prison. I opened the bathroom door and got out as Nathan was waiting on me.

"You fixed yourself up pretty good huh?" He walked over to me. "Who would've thought that a pretty boy like you could get himself in trouble." He smirked.

I fake gagged at the statement that caused him to laugh. "I think we'll get along roomie, your sense of humor is on the next level." It was then the smile dropped from his face before he warned. "Be careful of the students in white jackets or vests. They are the head students and overachievers and govern the rest of underachievers." He paused then continued, "Try not to get their attention, or less it's over for you."

The change in Nathan's demeanor made me want to rethink my whole life choices. It was evident that he wasn't joking around when he said that. A bell rang indicating that it was 5:45 am. "Let's go, we have to stand outside and join the line from our room to the morning hall." I followed behind him as he used his access key card to shut the door. In front of us were students lined up and behind us. The lines were straight and I felt like I made it lean. Nathan's hand guide me to step into the line more and I knew my gut feeling was right. The entire place was silent and the only sound that could be heard was the clacking sound of boots coming this way.

Is this even legal in boarding schools? A school was a place of learning but this was taking it too far, I had a feeling I won't be doing well in a  place like this. It was more than one of the students in the white jacket that Nathan had mentioned earlier. There was one of the guys in the white jacket that caught my attention. He had this dull look on his face as if he wanted to be anywhere but here at the moment. He had jet black hair, the sides were faded and he was tall. Seems that this school made the students grow to some height because of the prison mentality that I've seen so far.

He gave off an eerie aura as soon as his eyes landed on me or rather Nathan. I averted my gaze and pretended as if I wasn't just staring into his soul acting as if I knew him. "In straight lines, make your way to the morning hall." One of the white jacket guys said. "Psst, who's that guy?" I whispered to Nathan. "Idiot, no talking." Why can't we talk? The last time I checked I was born with rights and free speech yet he's telling me to not talk. The audacity these people have at this school. The line began to move. I was supposed to have a tour guide show me around the school but no one came and offered, guess I'll have to ask Nathan later on. After we reach the morning hall, food was already on the table as students each went around the table and stood. By the time I had reached we got to the near end of the morning hall as I stood. Nathan stood beside me as well. I wanted to ask him what else we were supposed to wait on but decide against it when the white jackets were watching us like hawks.

"You may have a seat as we say our morning prayer." One of the white jackets hit a bell. Everyone immediately sat and I was the last one fumbling to pull my chair out and sit. Talk about embarrassment as everyone else was looking at me as if I grew two pairs of the devil's horn. He hit the bell once more and everyone starts to say the prayer. I mumbled along with the words having no idea what they were saying, then after it was finished we began our meal. The food on the table looked disgusting and bland. "You better eat up pretty boy, this is the best food we've gotten in a while." Nathan scoffed. I took out my glasses from my jacket and put them on. Mom said I had to wear my glasses because they don't allow lenses in the school. Like how were they gonna know if I had in lenses? Were they gonna tie me down and pluck out my eyes? Seriously nothing makes sense at this school. I took up the spoon and took up the yucky porridge, it looked like slime and mucus mixed. Deep down I wanted to gag but I shut my eyes before tasting a bit of it.

Huh? How was it possible that such a yucky thing taste good? Nathan laughed at my scornful yet surprised face, "Told you, it looks disgusting but it has taste. Preps to the chefs for making shit taste like paradise." I choked on the porridge as I laughed at Nathan's joke. His sense of humor was better than mine by far.

"I didn't know that you are blind Bartimaeus brother?" He said. "Who's blind barter- whatever the name was you called?" I asked. "Man, don't you read the bible or hear about the story- never mind, the point is I didn't know that you wore glasses." I didn't find what he said funny. Even though it was September and I got expelled before summer, I had a chance to start fresh, hence, I had to join the freshmen's orientation because I'm new to the school. All other Year 11, had been here already before me and knew the place. "Hey, the freshmen are leaving go join the line for the orientation, watch out for Ryan, and don't get on his wrong side like how you got his attention this morning," Nathan said. As I was about to ask him what he meant he shooed me off to leave before I got left behind. Seriously on the first day of school and this boarding school sucked.
