Chapter 13 - The Family Meal

The common power measurement is quite flawed admittedly. Healers will never be able to be judged for their actual strength, instead they will be ranked somewhat below their true strength though you can never be too sure how far below their true strength. A healer could be able to regrow limbs, something which is reserved for only the top class healers, but they would still only be considered at the level of an adept or veteran since their power is not focused towards destruction.

I do wish to find a more cohesive one, but the issue would be of how to introduce it. I would also have to find a way to remove the flaws of it's predecessor while still making it accurate to someones true power. Although, this problem could be solved if I were to find a way for all types of mages and species to use traditionally non destructive abilities as if they were as destructive as their more destructive focused counter parts.

- Charon's Journal of Future Research Projects

Charon simply walked towards the dining room, casually ignoring the annoyance that Hypnos had towards his... straightforward parenting techniques. Upon reaching one of many dining rooms in this labyrinth of a castle, he gently set both the children down in one of several chairs around a table before popping his head out into the hallway and looking at a maid who happened to be walking by.

"Hey, could you get two meals here for me!" Charon watched as the maid nervously nodded and ran away, "Huh, must be new."

Charon shrugged before heading back and taking a seat, he looked at the the two kids, his two kids, before shaking his head wryly.

'I mean, I don't know what I expected. They've only known me for a day so there's no way they could accept me as a father that easily. Maybe Adam was right, I do need more social interactions.' Charon sighed to himself, as his thoughts were interrupted by a light tugging on his sleeve.

He looked down to see Nyx looking up at him with the shiny eyes which contained a mix of childlike innocence and curiosity.

"If you're going to be our dad, then does that mean you'll get us anything we want?" Nyx asked, trying to copy all the faces of kids she had seen before when begging their parents for something they really want.

Perhaps due to his lacking social skills, or maybe the fact that Charon has the bad habit of spoiling those he considers himself close to, a trait which he received from Adam, either way Charon found himself unable to refuse when faced with those powerful puppy dog eyes.

"Yes. But you will have to be good while I'm conducting my research, Ok?" Charon refused to fully give in to his wish to spoil them, at least until he's fully accepted as their father.

"Yes! Well, in that case I want you to teach me how to get hair like yours!" Nyx excitedly pointed at Charon's white hair, sigils gliding across it's surface.

"Hmm, Well I won't be able to do that till your older. It hurts a lot and I will wait till I know your ready." Charon noticed Nyx starting to pout, raised his hands defensively, "Now, now. I promise you that as soon as I think your ready, as long as you still want hair like this, then I will help you with the process."

Hypnos, during this conversation was also sneaking jealousy filled peeks at Charon. Soon after the end of the conversation, as both Nyx and Charon were talking about gifts for her, several servants came bringing food for the two children.

Hypnos noticed that Charon hadn't gotten any food, "Where's your food? Actually, you didn't even eat yesterday either, now that I think of it."

"Oh? Concerned about your old man now, huh? Don't worry, It seems I don't need food anymore..." Charon thought about what the diet of a physical soul may be as he trailed off.

Hypnos looked at Charon, confusion evident on his face, before shrugging and digging in to the meal. He and Nyx were still especially hungry, although they were unaware of this being a side effect of using magic to heal malnutrition.

Charon looked at the two eating before shaking his head and turning back to Hypnos, "Don't worry Hypnos, I'll get you something as well after today."

The sound of coughing could be heard as Hypnos opened his mouth, "Who said I wants a gift from some weirdo like you!"

Charon chuckled as he simply rested his eyes and leaned back, waiting for them to finish their meal. With his eyes closed, Charon thought about what he learned so far about his race.

'Hmm, so to recap, my species has the ability to turn anyone into the same species as us, with us basically able to do it at any time. The chant is engraved in our minds with the sigils being imprinted upon out hair. We only need the body of those who will change as the material sacrifice.'

'We also possess the soul pledge as I'm calling it, which seems to have a lot more possibilities then I originally thought.' Charon cracked open one of his eyes to peek at the giant eye which resembled the white expanse which was his eyes, floating above each of the kids souls. It was turning around constantly as if looking out for danger.

'It also seems that we don't need sleep or food anymore, due to our unique combination of soul and body. Although I can still sleep if I decide to...' Charon's thoughts were brought to a halt as he could no longer hear the sounds of eating.

Opening his eyes, he could see Hypnos gently cleaning the food from Nyx's sloppy eating habits. Charon chuckled to himself before pulling out a napkin and cleaning off Hypnos as well, Hypnos tried slapping away the napkin but failed due to Charon's impressive speed.

After that, Charon stood up with an excited smirk before gesturing for them to follow him as he left the dining room they had eaten in. As they left, Charon reached out and pulled a string which came out of the wall next to the exit.

"If you end up eating without me, you can always use this to tell some servants to come to this dining room. When leaving you should also use it so they know that you need the room cleaned." Charon patiently explained as they walked back towards the direction of the room that the two had slept in before.

"Will we be eating without you often?" Nyx asked, nervous that the first person to show her kindness was already abandoning her.

"Hahaha, not likely! Although I will give you advice, when I was your age I would sneak out to one of the dining rooms and summon a servant to get a midnight snack." Charon chuckled to himself, remembering how sneaky he used to think he was.

Nyx's eyes widened in realization as she nodded sagely, "Father is very wise."

"Of course he is, he managed to confirm a theory that was previously thought impossible to prove." Charon bragged, before realizing that Nyx is too young to understand as she gave him a quizzical look.

Nyx simply tilted her head at him in confusion, while Hypnos looked like he understood what Charon a bit better as surprise was almost written all over his face.

"Don't worry Nyx, I'll explain the whole thing later." Charon waved away her confusion.

Right as Charon said that, they came to a door that was right next to the room they had spent the previous night in. Charon opened it to reveal a large room filled with three desks and various items spread across the desks.

There were various vials, with a shelf in the back with even more empty vials and bottles on it. There were several weird looking orbs with various liquids and creatures inside of them. As well as one book each on two of the desks.

"This is our Lab! Much better then the previous one that I had abandoned!" Charon grinned as he basked in the feeling of being back in a lab after so long.

"Woahhhhh! What is all this?" Nyx asked, her excitement palpable, as even Hypnos' eyes flashed with a combination of curiosity and excitement.

"These are all the tools we will be using during our research, though please be careful with everything until I teach you how to use them." Charon, yet again showing his social ineptitude, did not think about how dangerous it was to show children of the two's age a mage's lab and let them use the tools in one.

Thankfully for him, the two were forced to mature rather quickly before so there was no issue. Of course this wouldn't even be an issue if not for the fact that everyone in Charon's family did the same thing with their children.
