Chapter 3 - Buying a new Piano

"This is an apartment?" Lina asked herself, focusing on the massive apartment before her.

It was a large building with a red roof and white bricks for its walls. There was no gate, but there was a small staircase to the apartment's main door.

Lina quickly stepped up the staircase and once again began rummaging through her backpack to find a set of keys, which she did. But, unfortunately, Lina had to go through all the keys to open the door.

Then examining the apartment keys, she found what room she was in.

Not long after, she was finally in front of her apartment door after climbing three floors.

'I have to take the elevator from now on...' Lina weakly chuckled while wiping a thin layer of sweat.

But gazing at her apartment door, Lina suddenly felt like she was looking up at a giant wall.

'What if this girl has a family? Do I deceive them by acting as Lina?' Lina had a sorrowful expression. After all, she had taken this little girl's life.

Taking a deep breath, she cleared her mind and stepped inside. Unlike what she expected, it was tranquil. Nobody to greet her.

She turned her head left and right to examine the room but didn't find signs of other people living there. Walking around the living room, bedroom, and bathroom, Lina concluded that this girl was living alone.

In the bathroom, there was only one toothbrush. There was only one queen-sized bed in the bedroom, and in the living room were the daily accessories used only by a teenage girl.

"But there's no piano..." Lina spoke dejectedly. Before entering this home, she secretly hoped a piano would be waiting for her.

"Ahhh... my hands are itching..." Lina paced around the living room while fiddling with her finger agitatedly.

In her previous life, she would practice the piano right around now, so it was so weird for Lina to not play.

'Should I just buy a piano?' A crazy thought surfaced in her head. Lina took out her phone and began swiping across the screen.

If she had access to the entire phone, she might also have access to her bank account.

'I'm sorry little girl! I'll make sure to pay it all back!' Lina thought as she stared at the funds in her bank account.

'About 2300 euros!' Lina excitedly thought. With two thousand euros, she was defiantly able to purchase a decent upright piano.

Lina wasn't getting a grand piano for two reasons. One, because it's too expensive. Two, because it's too loud for her neighbors.

It was almost 4 o'clock, so Lina was sure she would get the piano in by today.

Not standing idly, Lina tossed her school books out of her backpack and threw her light bag over her back. Then, putting back on her boots, she quickly left her apartment.

Now out of her apartment, she entered the nearest piano shop on her phone and simply followed the directions.

It didn't matter which piano shop she went to since they all sold the same type of piano.

In about twenty minutes, Lina was standing before a budling with giant letters which wrote, "Larry's Pianos." But Lina remembered that she couldn't speak any German.

'Let's just hope the owner knows some Russian.' Lina thought as she entered the store.

Upon walking inside, she was met with the sight of rows and rows of upright pianos and grand pianos. She wandered around the store, examining all the upright pianos to see if they were any good.

"### ### # #### ###, ##### ####?" A voice sounded behind Lina, prompting her to turn around.

It was an old man in his seventies, wearing formal black attire. Lina had immediately guessed that this old man was Larry, the shop's owner.

"Do you speak any Russian?" Lina asked in Russian.

"Ah, are perhaps a Rossiyane? You do look German, Young lady." The old man replied back in Russian.

'Great! He speaks Russian!' Lina happily celebrated inwardly. This made everything thousand times easier.

"Yes, you can say something like that." Lina weakly chuckled while rubbing her head.

"Are you a pianist?" The old man asked.

Lina paused at his words. Even in her previous life, no one acknowledged her as a pianist, so she wasn't sure what to say.

"Well, sort of..." Lina answered, staring at the ground downheartedly.

"..." Larry watched Lina's expression but turned a blind eye to it. "So, what are you looking for?"

"A Yamaha upright," Lina replied after a short pause.

Larry then turned to Lina and spoke, "Yamaha's are expensive."

"My parents aren't here, so I'll be the one buying the piano."

"I can't sell it to you." Larry shook his head.

"What? Why?!" Lina asked, taken aback.

"I can't let an unresponsible child buy such an expensive piano, not to mention a child that has never touched the piano," Larry said.

"That shouldn't concern you. Maybe I'm just a kid who wants to try playing the piano. There's no way you would know."

"Someone like you buying a two thousand euro piano just to try playing?" Larry scoffed.

"For god's sake! Just sell me the damn piano!" Lina shouted with her fists clenched.

"No parents, no piano." Larry shrugged.

Lina sighed, running her fingers through her hair stressfully.

"You said that you couldn't sell the piano to me because I'm an unresponsible child that can't play the piano for shit, right?" Lina questioned.

"I didn't say it like that, but yes."

"So if I can prove to you that I can play the piano, will you sell me the piano?"

"Sure!" Larry laughed and took a seat on a stool nearby. "But you're going to have to do better than twinkle twinkle litter stars."

Hearing the old man's words, Lina's eyebrows twitched in annoyance. 'Did he just say twinkle twinkle litter stars? Don't worry, old man, I'll give you twinkle twinkle litter stars!'

Lina then walked to the nearest piano and flopped down on the black, lettered bentch. Then, fixing her posture, Lina's slightly curled her fingers on top of the piano keys.

This would be Lina's first time playing the piano in this life. The start of her new beginning. The start of her story.
